Just Peace Movie Night x The Ocean and Us: Women from the Sea

5 June @ 18:00 - 21:00

Women from the Sea – Significant Gestures spotlights the women at the forefront of ocean conservation and protection.

Join us for a meaningful evening organised by The Ocean and Us and The Hague Humanity Hub, as part of the Just Peace Movie Night Series.

On 5 June, we will screen Women from the Sea (Mulheres do Mar) – Significant Gestures: a poetic documentary by Portuguese director Raquel Martins. Through intimate interviews with women dedicated to safeguarding our oceans, the film explores their personal connections to the sea, revealing stories of care, resilience, and responsibility that challenge and deepen our understanding of our relationship with the ocean.

This film is part of a journey that has been unfolding over time, shaped by encounters, shared paths, and stories that stay with us. Through these women’s stories, the film reflects on the urgency of protecting the ocean and celebrates the collective strength of women to inspire change and care for our shared future. Ultimately, Women from the Sea shows that small, meaningful gestures can, over time, reshape what once felt immovable.

After the screening, we will explore the critical ocean challenges and solutions raised during the film through a moderated panel discussion in collaboration with Farah Obaidullah of The Ocean and Us. We will announce the speakers soon!

About Just Peace Movie Nights:

Just Peace Movie Nights is an event series organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with partner organisations from The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem. It brings themes of peace and justice to life for a broad audience, creating space to reflect on important issues together through storytelling and cinema.

About the organisers:

Stichting The Ocean and Us (ANBI) is an organization dedicated to safeguarding healthy oceans as essential to human survival and well-being, and as a moral responsibility to all life on Earth. Their work focuses on advocacy across a wide range of critical ocean issues, from climate change, overfishing, and pollution to emerging threats such as deep-sea mining. They believe that effective ocean solutions require elevating and supporting diverse voices and communities working to protect the ocean worldwide.

The Hague Humanity Hub is a not for profit foundation based in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice and home to hundreds of organisations working towards a better word. We offer an open and inclusive platform for changemakers, including our Climate Justice Community, to connect both locally and internationally, building bridges across themes, sectors, and disciplines.
