Foodrise is looking for a Dutch-speaking Climate & Food Campaigner who can make power visible, challenge systems, and position Foodrise as a player that businesses, media, and politicians cannot ignore.
Climate & Food Campaigner – Foodrise
More than 15% of global CO₂ emissions come from intensive livestock farming. That’s more than all cars and airplanes combined. Yet these major Big Agri polluters still avoid their climate responsibility and remain largely unseen. Time for a change.
Foodrise challenges dominant narratives in the food system. They work on underexposed issues in the food system and ensure that these are addressed by others. First by the media and other NGOs, later by policymakers, politicians, and decision-makers in the business community. For example, Foodrise were among the first to highlight the role of banks, supermarkets, and Big Agri corporations in the climate crisis. They have highlighted the consequences of farmed fish, including the major players who finance it, and were among the first to warn politicians how “sustainable” energy based on crops and fertilizers only leads to more damage. A recent priority is advocating for more publicly owned supermarkets. They’re a familiar face in Brussels’ political scene and aim to be in The Hague as well.
With a team of 20 campaigners in London, Brussels, and Amsterdam, Foodrise works as one on this mission. Formally, they’re two organizations, but substantively, they’re one team that builds, scales, and strengthens each other across borders.
About the role
Foodrise is looking for someone with extensive experience with campaigns that can be challenging. Someone who makes power visible, challenges systems, and positions Foodrise as a player that businesses, media, and politicians cannot ignore. You’ll ensure that the complex topics they investigate become logical and understandable for journalists, other NGOs, and policymakers to put on the agenda. You understand that the world is changing rapidly and that traditional communication, lobbying, and campaigning tactics are becoming increasingly less effective. You know how to cut through the noise and create momentum, both in person and online.
This role focuses on Big Agro and industrial food production. At the same time, you will work within a broader narrative that views food as a public good, and in which they demonstrate how dominant business models undermine public interests both on land and at sea.
You have two tasks:
- You will develop and lead Foodrise’s climate campaigns to raise the profile of Big Agro so they can develop better climate plans and prevent false solutions, such as biomethane, from expanding.
- You will increase the visibility and impact of Foodrise by translating their research into communication and advocacy efforts that inspire action. Their focus will sometimes be on the Netherlands, sometimes on Brussels, and their primary goal will be to raise awareness of issues so they can be adopted by others.
Responsibilities
- You will take full ownership of (parts of) the climate program: you will translate substantive objectives into clear campaign and communication goals and develop and implement campaigns together with the team in the Netherlands and the UK.
- You will build and participate in existing climate and food coalitions with other NGOs to ensure everyone is empowered to work together to change the system.
- You will actively build Foodrise as a consistent voice in media and politics, through op-eds, campaigns, social media, and visible interventions in the Netherlands, Brussels, and the UK.
- You will maintain relationships with politicians in both The Hague and Brussels.
- You will ensure that Foodrise’s campaigns not only make a splash but also deliver impact and are measurable in terms of reach, policy change, and narrative shift.
- You will connect campaigns with fundraising and help translate Foodrise’s successes into compelling stories for funds and partners.
- You will take responsibility for developing and strengthening a young NGO, including the operational and organizational responsibilities that come with it.
About you
- You have an idealistic background and have already demonstrated your ability to drive change.
- At least 7 years of relevant work experience in, for example, campaigning, strategic communications, journalism, public affairs, or marketing.
- A strong sense of visibility, (social) media, and storytelling; experience working with journalists is a plus.
- Confidence to take the stage.
- Affinity with politics in The Hague and Brussels.
- Experience with fundraising is a plus.
- Comfort in a high-impact role with responsibility, freedom, and occasional ad-hoc work.
- Fluent in Dutch and English.
