The Hague Climate Justice Lab launched at the Sustainable Breakfast in light of Human Rights Day

17 December, 2025

On the morning of the 10th of December, a diverse group of residents, local representatives, the Municipality of The Hague, Dururzaam Den Haag and The Hague Humanity Hub gathered for a community breakfast to investigate how to build a climate-just city together. The answer? The announcement of the Hague Lab for Climate Justice.

The Hague Lab for Climate Justice is part of the city’s journey to become climate-neutral by 2030. Launching in 2026, this initiative will put residents, especially underrepresented groups, at the center of decision-making and sustainable action.

The Sustainable Breakfast was hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub and is part of our mission within climate justice. Marija Pop Trajkova, programme manager at the Hub, illustrated during the Breakfast how local and international themes intersect, shifted us to think beyond emissions, and to discussions about human rights, peace, justice and solidarity.

The depth of this conversation was made possible by the diverse voices in the room. We are grateful for the contributions of Lennart van der Linde and Joris Wijsmuller (Duurzaam Den Haag), Kees Klomp (Fair Economy Manifesto), and Jeroen Laven (Municipality of The Hague). Insights from the heart of our community were shared by Fatma Aktas (Stichting Avrasya) and Mohammed Bohaloua (Stagehuis Schilderswijk), while Gerrit Jan van ’t Veen and Elly Rijnierse provided a vision for the future through The Hague Doughnut.

Climate Justice Community

As part of Humanity Hub’s ongoing commitment to building a cross-sector Climate Justice community, we are working to accelerate equitable climate action. To that end, the Sustainable Breakfast and the launch of the Lab serve as vital platforms for our community to connect, innovate, and turn these goals into reality.
