Humanity Hub Programming Advisory Board meeting – 19th September 2024 15h-17h at The Hague Humanity Hub

Participants:

PAB members:
Jan-Aart Scholte, Maaike De Loor, Simon Tiller (chair), Wim Jansen, Nadja Houben, Jill Wilkinson, Zoey Breslar, Nadia Sánchez-Castillo, Gerrit Jan van ’t Veen.

Hub team members:
Alexandre Taillandier, Marcela Neves, Katsiaryna Pushkarova.

Guests:
Yussuf Abdi, Zainul Habieb from the Hijaz Community.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Sectoral Insights: Members discussed the impact of budget cuts in the sector, possible activities around the upcoming NATO summit and the World Justice Forum, as well as around the Hague Climate Week and the ICJ hearings on climate change.
  • Hijaz Community: Our guests presented their organization of 40-50 volunteers who conduct campaigns to support local communities throughout the Netherlands, promulgating interfaith harmony and understanding (i.e. campaigns to improve everyday civility.) PAB members noted the need to be more involved at the local level and using the Dutch language in outreach, as well a need to reflect on what it means for the local population of The Hague to be living in the city of peace and justice. The PAB agreed to look for ways in which the Hub and the Hijaz Community could work together.

  • Overview of Events & Opportunities: The Hub team shared opportunities and events for PAB members to attend. Two Hub team members are attending the Geneva Peace Week on 14-18 October, with two other members visiting Geneva at the same time. The Hub will report back at the next PAB on its experience and insights that might applicable for the Hague ecosystem and Hub activities.
  • Hub Finance & Governance: The Hub team presented the financial and structural overview of the organization.
  • Pitch & Activities Feedback: The Hub team presented for member’s feedback a new approach to describe and pitch the Hub’s mission and activities. Members suggested clarifying for whom the pitch is addressed and make more connections with other stakeholders, such as the private sector. Other feedback included the idea to be bolder with the mission. The tension between passive and active role of the Hub as a marketplace or community enabler was also highlighted. There is room to be more active and be a catalyst.
  • Thematic Working groups: Members expressed their initial wishes to be assigned to the following working groups to help the Hub develop in these areas:

  1. Hub mission and community development
  2. Programming and thematic advice
  3. Connections and networks
  4. Impact measurement and capabilities
  5. Business development opportunities

Agreed actions:

  1. PAB Members and the Hub will explore possible community engagement and programming around the NATO summit, the World Justice Forum, the Hague climate Week, and the ICJ hearings on climate.
  2. PAB Members are invited to give further feedback on the Hub Pitch document within two weeks, so it can be finalized
  3. PAB Members are invited to share connections and recommendations to Hub’s engagement in the Geneva Peace Week plans.
  4. Hub team to formalize the establishment of the working groups and hold their first meeting in advance of the next PAB meeting
