Why Now
As democracy comes under increasing pressure and the room to operate for many actors in the peace and justice ecosystem is being curtailed, we believe part of the response lies in creating space for new ideas, experimentation, and deeper collaboration across sectors, perspectives, and levels of action.
#DemocracyDrinks The Hague is a fitting format for this, as it is an informal conversation and networking series bringing together people working on democracy, peace, justice, and civic space. Over the past years, editions have explored issues ranging from democratic participation and literacy to climate justice, women’s leadership, and local democracy – always through open exchange and networking rather than formal panels.
Opening the Platform
From early 2026 onwards, #DemocracyDrinks The Hague is opening the platform to the wider community. Alongside regular editions, organisations and initiatives will be able to propose and host Democracy Drinks conversations – bringing new voices, questions, and approaches into the series.
This is an invitation not only to host conversations, but to test ideas, explore emerging challenges, and collectively think through what comes next in an informal, cross-sector setting.
What Fits the Format
#DemocracyDrinks works best for:
- Ideas, questions, or dilemmas that are still taking shape
- Exploratory or experimental conversations
- Cross-sector perspectives and diverse viewpoints
The format is not intended for launches, campaigns, or organisational showcases.
