The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) is a world-renowned international graduate school of critical social science focused on global development and social justice. ISS is based in The Hague and part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The research, teaching and engagement activities of ISS aim to contribute to a better understanding of Global Justice and Social Development around the world.
ISS brings together students and teachers from the Global South and the North in a European environment. More than 55 nationalities are represented in the student body.
ISS offers an MA and PhD programme in Development Studies as well as a number of tailor-made short courses. Research at ISS focuses on development studies. This transdisciplinary field of study seeks to understand the phenomena of underdevelopment, development, and change, with special reference to low-income countries. ISS research focuses on studying political, economic, and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East, and transition economies. The Institute explores new developments in North-South and South-South relationships and the role of the upcoming economies countries, especially in relation to globalization and development.
