The Handshake with John Marks
6 March @ 16:00 - 18:00

Join us for the next edition of The Handshake featuring John Marks, a highly skilled social entrepreneur, founder of the Nobel Peace Prize nominated NGO Search for Common Ground, and accomplished author. This event takes place at Inholland Den Haag on March 6th, 16.00-18.00.
Are you thinking of a career focused on peacebuilding, sustainable development or furthering global peace and justice? Are you interested in creative industries? Do you have innovative ideas for solving pressing societal issues and are interested in hearing what it takes to be a successful social entrepreneur? Either way, you have come to the right place!
Whether you are a student or a young professional we invite you to join ‘The Handshake‘: an event series where we are joined by senior figures from the world of peace & justice and “for good” sectors to reveal the ins and outs of their careers and network with young talent! There will be moderated conversation, time for Q&As from the audience and networking.
“To make a difference in the world you have to have a way to apply your vision in concrete ways, you need to keep showing up and be a persistent risk taker, but also a calculating risk taker.”
Introducing John:
John Marks is the author of From Vision to Action: Remaking the World Through Social Entrepreneurship. Until 2014, he was President of Search for Common Ground, a non-profit organization he founded in 1982 and built with his wife Susan Collin Marks into the world’s largest peacebuilding NGO with 600 staff members and offices in 36 countries. He also founded Common Ground Productions. In 2018, his work was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. He is a best-selling, award-winning author, a former US Foreign Service Officer, a Skoll Awardee in Social Entrepreneurship, and an Ashoka Senior Fellow. He was a Fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School. The UN’s University of Peace awarded him an honorary PhD.
John is joining the Handshake to share insights from his career and how to navigate challenges in the non-profit peace and justice and entrepreneurship sectors and shed light on how to get started especially during these trying times.
As after ten years living in Amsterdam, John and his wife Susan will be moving back to Washington, DC in April, this is likely one of your last chances to meet and hear from him first hand. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!
During this unique session at InHolland we will also be joined by Philippa Collin who will share opportunities and approaches to how you can start today in developing individual skills for addressing societal transitions and sustainability challenges, just as John has dedicated his life to doing. Many of us can feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of such challenges and don’t know where to start taking action. That is why The Expertise Network for Systemic Co-Design (ESC) is proud to present the Inner Development Goals ESC-IDG Hub, which emphasizes how personal growth contributes to achieving a sustainable society. Join this event to discover how the IDGs and the ESG-IDG Hub can support you in building a meaningful and purpose-driven career.
