Ethics in the 21st Century | Webinar Series

UNESCO Chair on Science Education at Dragomanov Ukrainian State University, in partnership with Tablet Academy Benelux and leading international experts in ethics, presents a webinar series titled ‘Ethics in the 21st Century.’

This series explores the foundations of ethics, emerging global trends, and contemporary ethical principles, as well as their implications for education, the public and private sectors, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. Through expert-led discussions and practical insights, the webinars aim to equip professionals, educators, policymakers, and emerging young

INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS | Tuesday, June 9, 11:00 a.m.

This session will introduce the subject of philosophical ethics in three parts:

1. First, it will discuss ethics as a social practice and a form of philosophical argumentation, with attention to the distinction between normative and nonnormative ethics.
2. Second, it will address common misconceptions about ethics by differentiating it from (a) mere opinion, (b) self-interest and altruism, (c) legal and professional standards, and (d) organizational strategy.
3. Third, it will provide an overview of two major categories of ethical obligation: (a) justice and (b) prudential duties. The concluding portion of the session will present a concise rendering of this content in the form of five principles that can underwrite broad-based ethics education in personal, organizational, and societal contexts: (a) justice, (b) care, (c) responsibility, (d) respect, and (e) community
