#DemocracyDrinks: Finding Wellbeing Through Ubuntu

24 September, 2024 @ 17:00 - 19:00

To kick off the #democracydrinks season, on 24 September we have invited Dorine van Norren to speak about her research on global wellbeing and development viewed from the African philosophy of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu dictates that wellbeing is rooted in community. To achieve harmony in society, one has to put the community before oneself. One’s happiness depends on the happiness of others —”I am because we are” or “humanity towards others” (in Zulu: umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu).

What can we learn from Ubuntu and how can Ubuntu help shape development, sustainability, democracy and human rights? – where the western liberal view of democracy is much more focused on individual needs and happiness. But can one find happiness in a society that doesn’t put the community first?
