Book Launch: “Disaster Recovery Through Women’s Eyes” by Dr Kaira Zoe Alburo-Cañete

6 November @ 16:00 - 18:00

For too long, recovery has been measured in terms of infrastructure rebuilt, economic functions restored and institutions ‘built back better’. Yet recovery is also lived through everyday acts of care, survival, resistance and collective action. Much of this work is undertaken by women, yet it is rarely placed at the centre of how recovery is understood.

We will mark the occasion with a panel discussion around the key themes of the book, including resilience as a lived and entangled process rather than a technocratic framework, the role of narrative in disaster research and care-based ethical approaches in disaster recovery.

As part of the book launch, we also invite you to tour a photo exhibition, drawn from a selection used during the research project as part of the ‘PhotoKwento’ methodology, bringing another dimension to the stories and experiences at the heart of the book.

This event is co-organized by ISS and The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centrel (HSC).
