The climate crisis is increasingly being framed as a security matter, a factor that fuels conflicts and necessitates military expansion. But what are the consequences of militarization for the environment and the climate crisis itself?
“Earth’s Greatest Enemy” (2025) addresses a blind spot in mainstream environmental awareness by highlighting the scale of ecological destruction and human suffering caused by militarism. With its devastating account of the U.S. military’s contribution to climate collapse, ecocide, and the poisoning of the planet, this thought-provoking film urges us to view militarized ecologies as a structural feature of the American empire and capitalist exploitation. At a time of increasing militarization in Europe and around the world, the film also exposes the lack of accountability for crimes of ecocide.
Director Abby Martin is a journalist and activist from the United States. She is co-director of the documentary “99%: The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film” (2013) and director of the documentary “Gaza Fights for Freedom” (2019).
