Virtual Routes
Virtual Routes tackles the impact of digital and emerging technologies on global affairs through research, education and public engagement with policymakers, industry, civil society, and the general public.
Virtual Routes is a place for people passionate about technology and global affairs to find a like-minded community, develop new ideas and skills, and deliver positive change where it is needed most. Since its inception in 2020, Virtual Routes has built a growing community of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who work together to understand and address some of the greatest challenges facing today’s world.
Their work focuses on three interconnected areas:
Education and Talent Development
They equip current and future leaders with practical knowledge and skills at the intersection of technology, policy, and global affairs. Their programmes include the European Cybersecurity Fellowship, a Cybersecurity Seminars programme involving 22 universities, and summer bootcamps for students. Their VIRO learning platform offers over 15 courses on emerging technologies, taught by leading experts.
Community Support and Resilience
They help communities and civil society organisations strengthen their digital resilience through our Cybersecurity Services Centre. Alongside this support, they connect people, share practical resources, and create opportunities for dialogue and knowledge exchange to build a more informed, connected, and inclusive technology community.
Research and Analysis
They conduct independent, rigorous research focused on commercial surveillance, ransomware, cyber conflict, and AI and cybersecurity. Their work informs technological, policy, and societal responses to these challenges. They also run the AI-Cybersecurity Research and Policy Hub.
They also run Binding Hook, an online publication bringing together expert analysis and commentary on digital technology and security, with a European focus and perspectives from around the world.
