Humanitarian Justice & The State of the Humanitarian System

19 June, 2026

The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre is organising its 2026 One-Day Conference on Humanitarian Justice & The State of the Humanitarian System on Friday 2 October 2026.

At a time when humanitarian action is under growing pressure, the conference will explore big questions about the future of humanitarian work: who it serves, who gets to shape it, how it responds to injustice, and how it can remain effective in a world of conflict, climate crisis, displacement and shrinking resources.

The conference builds on the emerging idea of Humanitarian Justice, set out in the Istanbul-Bergen Declaration. In simple terms, this means humanitarian responses that are fair, transparent, inclusive and respectful, rooted in dignity, solidarity, care and shared responsibility. It also asks how the knowledge and voices of people affected by crises can be taken seriously in decisions that shape humanitarian action.

HSC is inviting short presentation proposals from people working on or interested in humanitarian action, justice, conflict, international law, climate-related crises, disaster risk reduction, migration, refugees, community action or wider questions about how the humanitarian system should change. Contributions can come from research, direct work in the field, policy, education, advocacy, lived experience,  or creative work.

Deadline for abstracts: 20 July 2026. More information about the call for presentation is available here.
