New technologies such as AI and algorithmic decision making offer us fantastic possibilities. However, when they are deployed incorrectly or inappropriately their use can also have devastating consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. They carry a huge risk, in particular, of discrimination against marginalised groups.

Government organisations aim to do the right thing. And luckily we have good data protection legislation. But what you are allowed to do is not necessarily the same as what you should do. This is where ethics comes in. It enables us to uncover underlying principles that are more enduring than policy and legislation. And by doing so, it can be a great help in setting and maintaining a course in these uncertain and volatile times.

We strive for public administration that takes the moral aspect of data into account as a matter of course. More specifically, we target Dutch government institutions and their employees who would like to see a just world, in which there is no room for discrimination, and in which people are treated with respect – and hence so are their data. And who do not avoid difficult conversations about such issues, but rather welcome them. Our focus is on AI literacy, algorithmic discrimination, bias and fairness, ethical dialogue and the critical attitude of civil servants. We pursue our mission by spreading data ethics knowledge.

We do this by providing training, facilitating data ethics dialogue sessions, and making appearances in the media and at events. In addition, as a service to the community, we provide free news, information, knowledge, and tools on data ethics at https://dataethiek.info.
