As we approach the new year, and with it the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), it is an important time to reflect on the recently adopted Advisory Opinion on state responsibility for climate change and human rights. This historical milestone – one of the few Advisory Opinions ever adopted unanimously – represents years of advocacy, the injustices faced by victims of climate change, and a beacon of light for the future of climate justice.
The YUMI journey: Climate Justice at the ICJ and Beyond is an invitation-only evening bringing together leading figures from The Hague’s peace and justice and diplomatic communities. Organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with the City of The Hague and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the Hague Project Peace and Justice, it will be an opportune chance to reflect on the road so far—and the one ahead—for climate justice.
The programme features a special film screening of Yumi: A Youth-Led Journey from the South Pacific to the ICJ, which retraces the youth-led campaign that brought the climate case to the world’s highest court. This will be followed by a followed by an inspiring dialogue and keynote reflecting on the path forward, with speakers from the forefront of climate crisis and the legal challenge that was brought to the ICJ. The evening will conclude with a networking reception in the historic location of Pathé Buitenhof.

Join the waiting listYUMI tells the incredible story of three inspiring law students, Solomon, Vishal and Romabeth, who set out from the University of the South Pacific on an amazing journey to take climate change to the world’s highest court through the United Nations.
Their mission? To save their home islands from extinction! The three students are on their way up, from a small university room to the international stage! They learn how to deal with ministers, ambassadors and commissioners, experience the frustrations of diplomacy and face the challenges of their ambitious goal: to push through a historic resolution at the United Nations so that the ICJ will finally legally define the obligations of states to address climate change. Will their relentless motivation and the challenging countries they must overcome be enough to convince 97 UN member states to take their case to the International Court of Justice?
