SUMMARY:War on Terror: Legacy\, Justice\, Art: Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference brings together scholars\, practitioners\, journalists\, and artists to examine the enduring legacy of the “war on terror” and its implications for the future. Nearly twenty-five years after its inception\, the War on Terror continues to shape global politics\, law\, and society . The discussion will explore both continuities and transformations in this legacy\, including patterns of militarisation\, dehumanisation\, legal exceptionalism\, and shifting forms of intervention. \nLooking ahead\, the event also considers how international law\, media\, and the arts can respond to these challenges. It creates space for dialogue on the role of artistic expression in advancing justice—particularly in contexts where legal remedies remain limited or contested. \nSet against ongoing global tensions and debates around accountability\, human rights\, and the rule of law\, the conference invites participants to reflect on key questions: What are the strengths and limits of legal frameworks in addressing contemporary conflicts? How do evolving narratives of security shape international law? And what role can creative and media practices play alongside legal efforts in promoting justice? \nThe programme will be followed by the launch of the exhibition Art/Justice by Abu Zubaydah\, presenting works by the Guantánamo detainee and offering a powerful artistic perspective on detention\, accountability\, and the pursuit of justice. \n	Register here

SUMMARY:Workshop: Mapping Incidents for Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Introduction to Incident Mapping for Accountability Work \nJoin us for this online workshop\, where we’ll walk through the practical basics of incident mapping for accountability work. From there\, we’ll look at visual mapping techniques and strategic scoping\, including how to identify relevant parties\, prioritize incidents\, choose the right timeframes\, and focus on broader conflict zones or specific sites of interest. We’ll also explore real-world examples in Google Earth to show how these methods come together in practice. \nBy the end of the session\, you’ll have a solid foundation for turning scattered information into a clearer picture that can support accountability and advocacy efforts. Please note that this session will be recorded. \nInstructor: Jenna Dolecek \nJenna works with OSINT for Ukraine in the International Crimes Investigation Group (ICIG) and is also an Open Source Investigation and Geospatial Analysis Expert with Justice Rapid Response. SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x KUNO: Lost Land
DESCRIPTION:Just Peace Movie Night x KUNO: Lost Land \nJoin us for a powerful evening organised by KUNO and The Hague Humanity Hub\, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series. \nOn 26 May\, we will screen Lost Land (Harà Watan)\, a gripping fictional feature by Japanese director Akio Fujimoto. The film exposes the trauma of displacement and decades of persecution faced by the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Told through the eyes of children\, it sheds light on the lived experiences of refugees by blending harsh reality with elements of fantasy\, drawing attention to a humanitarian crisis that is too often overlooked. \nAbout the film – Lost Land \nIn the hope of reuniting with their scattered family\, four-year-old Shafi and his nine-year-old sister Somira leave a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh and embark on a perilous journey to Malaysia. Along the way\, the children encounter natural forces\, exploitation through cross-border trafficking\, and constant challenges that test their resilience. \nLost Land is the first feature made entirely in the Rohingya language and is shot at the eye-level of its young protagonists. Featuring more than two hundred Rohingya participants\, the film offers a powerful and immersive portrayal of their collective experience. \nLost Land was nominated for the Grand Jury Fiction Award at the Movies that Matter Festival 2026. \nThe movie screening will be followed by a moderated panel discussion in collaboration with KUNO. We will announce the speakers soon! \nProgramme \n\n18:15 – 18:45 – Walk-in & drinks\n18:45 – 20:45 – Introduction and film screening: Lost Land\n20:45 – 21:30 – Moderated discussion and Q&A\n\nThis evening invites you to watch\, reflect\, and engage in dialogue on border violence\, human rights and belonging. \n\nTickets: €5\,50 – The ticket price includes a free drink.\nLocation: The Hague Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, 2511 CJ The Hague\nDate & Time: 26 May 2026 | 18:15 – 21:30\n\nAbout Just Peace Movie Nights \nJust Peace Movie Nights is an event series organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with partner organisations from The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Far-Right Networks: Diffusion and Democratic Impact
DESCRIPTION:A closer look at far-right networks\, focusing on the case study of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India.\nHow do far-right networks embed themselves in cultural\, educational\, and political institutions? How do they translate grassroots presence into electoral power and ideological influence? And what explains their resilience across very different political contexts? \nThis event will examine the organizational strategies that enable far-right movements to build legitimacy\, extend their reach across society\, and sustain long-term mobilization. \nTo explore these questions\, the event will showcase the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India as a central case study. As one of the world’s largest and most enduring far-right organizations\, the RSS offers a particularly revealing lens onto the mechanics of far-right mobilization: \n\nIts century-long historical development\nIts layered ecosystem of affiliated organizations\nIts decisive influence on contemporary Indian politics.\n\nYet the RSS is not an outlier. Its strategies resonate with\, and in some cases prefigure\, patterns visible in far-right movements across Europe\, the Americas\, and beyond\, from the cultivation of civil society fronts to the fusion of nationalism\, majoritarian identity\, and disinformation. \nTogether we will reflect on what these networks mean for democracy\, pluralism\, and civil society today\, and how their growing visibility is reshaping political landscapes worldwide. \n	Register now

SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth Protests in Kenya with Wangechi Grace Kahuria
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informal conversation with Wangechi Grace Kahuria on defending the human rights of youth movements in Kenya.\nIn this edition of the Fireside Peace Chats (FPC) series\, we welcome Wangechi Grace Kahuria\, a Kenyan civil rights activist and the Executive Director of IMLU\, a Health\, Governance and Human Rights Organisation involved in forensic documentation\, litigation\, medical and psychosocial rehabilitation of survivors of torture\, and monitoring the government’s adherence to its human rights commitments. Wangechi is currently participating in the Shelter City initiative\, a global movement for the protection of human rights defenders initiated by Justice & Peace. \nIn 2024\, young people were at the forefront of a wave of massive demonstrations against rising tax bills in Kenya. Kenyan authorities reacted with a brutal clampdown and have since continued to intimidate\, harass\, abduct and torture peaceful protestors\, members of human rights organisations and other government critics. Drawing from her work at IMLU and her attendance at several UN sessions in Geneva\, Wangechi will reflect on her experience with supporting youth activists in Kenya\, the challenges she faces in her field\, and pathways to justice for victims of severe human rights abuses. \nCome ready to listen\, reflect\, and exchange insights on accountability\, justice\, and the protection of youth political participation in the face of democratic decline. \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats? \nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform Security and Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \n	Register now!

While in-person participation is encouraged\, all sessions can also be attended digitally\, making full remote participation possible. \nWith a group size of 15 to 20 participants\, the programme offers an interactive and focused learning environment for senior professionals from across the international development sector. \nDeveloped as part of the ISS Leadership Programme and in close collaboration with the Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre\, the course connects key themes such as resilience\, risk\, vulnerability\, and sustainable development. Participants are encouraged to translate insights directly into action within their own organisations. \nWho should attend\nThis course is aimed at experienced professionals with at least ten years of experience in international development. It is particularly relevant for managers\, leaders\, strategists\, monitoring and evaluation specialists\, and business developers. \nParticipants typically come from donor agencies\, international NGOs\, think tanks\, philanthropic foundations\, development consultancies\, and international development banks. The programme is also well suited for directors\, board members\, and management teams looking to strengthen their strategic leadership. \nWhat you will gain\nThroughout the programme\, you will develop the knowledge\, skills\, and mindset needed to increase your organization’s impact. You will learn how to move beyond linear approaches and adopt more adaptive forms of programming\, drawing on complexity thinking to better address real-world challenges. You will gain insights into how development efforts can be strengthened by anticipating future risks and enhancing societal resilience\, while also learning from best practices across organizations. \nIn addition\, the programme focuses on practical skill-building. You will learn how to identify blind spots within your organization\, engage constructively with donors and investors\, and create safe and inclusive work environments where innovation is encouraged. \nOn a personal level\, the programme supports your development as a leader. It helps you build the confidence and creativity needed to challenge existing structures and to foster a more open and learning-oriented organizational culture. \nLearning experience\nThe learning experience is highly interactive and designed to encourage exchange between participants. You will work in a small group setting that offers space for reflection\, discussion\, and peer learning. Participants are invited to bring a colleague to one of the sessions\, and those joining from abroad can take part in an additional online intervision session at no extra cost. \nBeyond the sessions themselves\, you will become part of a dynamic network of peers and gain access to the ISS alumni community. \nPractical details\nEach session requires approximately two hours of preparation. All teaching materials are included in the programme\, and upon completion you will receive a certificate from the International Institute of Social Studies. The course fee is €2\,450. \nCourse materials\nAs part of the programme\, you will receive the book Foreign Aid and its Unintended Consequences by Professor Dirk-Jan Koch\, published by Routledge in 2024. This book is included in the course fee and will be sent to you by post upon acceptance. \nIn addition\, you will have access to a series of knowledge video clips that you can watch at your own pace in preparation for the sessions. \n	Apply now!
