SUMMARY:[Book discussion] Judicial remedies\, compliance and enforcement in international law
DESCRIPTION:How Do International Courts Shape State Behaviour? \nJudicial remedies are at the heart of international law—but how exactly do they influence states and ensure compliance? Join this expert book discussion to explore the often-overlooked power of international courts. \nEvent Details\nDate: Thursday 9 April 2026\nTime: 17:00\nLocation: Asser Institute\nFee: Free \nAbout the Event\nInternational courts play a central role in defining legal relations between states. This event explores how judicial remedies—one of their key tools—help identify violations\, articulate legal consequences\, and shape state behaviour. \nTaking Dr. Geraldo Vidigal’s recent book Adjudicating over Anarchy as a starting point\, the discussion will examine how courts contribute to compliance and order in an increasingly complex international system. Adjudicating over Anarchy: Judicial Remedies\, Compliance\, and Enforcement in International Law examines how international courts use their powers to influence state behaviour. Drawing on a century of practice across dozens of courts\, the book highlights how legal rulings shape compliance—even in the absence of direct enforcement mechanisms. \nSpeakers\nDr Pola Cebulak — Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam\nProfessor Pierre d’Argent — University of Louvain\nDr Geraldo Vidigal — University of Amsterdam\nModerator:\nJudge Georg Nolte — International Court of Justice \nThe event will be followed by a cocktail reception. \n	Register here!

SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Biodiversity in the City of Peace & Justice
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, share & learn about what different organisations are doing to make the world more peaceful and sustainable at the Community Drinks\n\nWhat if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away? \nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Thrusday\, April 16th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals that think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems and global policies. \nFrom coastal dunes and migratory birds to urban gardens and pollinators\, biodiversity surrounds us—even in the heart of a global city like The Hague! As environmental pressures intensify worldwide\, conversations about how we protect and preserve the natural world are becoming increasingly urgent\, and they belong not only in laboratories and policy rooms but also in our communities. \nThe theme of ”Biodiversity & Preservation” encourages us to think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems\, societies\, and global policy. Biodiversity loss is not only an environmental challenge; it is deeply linked to human rights\, food security\, climate resilience\, and social stability. Protecting ecosystems means protecting communities and futures. \nJoin The April edition of the Community Drinks for a fruitful conversation that may spark collaborations\, inspire new perspectives\, or simply deepen our collective awareness of the living systems that sustain us. \nWe would like to explore some of the following questions through the selected spotlights for the evening: \n\nWhat does biodiversity mean in an urban city like The Hague\, and how can cities become spaces that actively support ecological diversity?\nHow are local ecosystems\, from the North Sea coastline to urban green spaces\, changing\, and what can communities do to help protect them?\nWhat role can residents\, civil society organizations\, and international institutions in The Hague play in preserving biodiversity at both local and global levels?\nHow can urban planning\, architecture\, and public spaces contribute to healthier ecosystems and more biodiversity-friendly cities?\nHow can international policy conversations taking place in The Hague connect more directly to local environmental action?\nAnd finally\, how can we foster a stronger sense of connection between people\, place\, and the natural systems that sustain life in and around our city?\n\nThrough short spotlights and open discussion\, the evening aims to create space for reflection\, inspiration\, and collaboration across disciplines and communities. \nWho are the speakers? \n\nGreenAnt\nGreenAnt is a climate-tech company leveraging satellite data and artificial intelligence to tackle environmental risks. They focus on providing cutting-edge solutions for climate risk management\, disaster response\, and sustainability analysis.\nOne Acre Fund\nOne Acre Fund works with 5.6 million smallholder farmer households to equip them with the supplies and training they need to thrive. They put Farmers First in everything they do\, helping them grow more food\, plant more trees\, and earn more money from their harvests.\nSpace4Good\nSpace4Good is a team of impact-driven data scientists\, remote sensing & GIS experts\, software developers as well as environmental and urban planners using their unique skills and experience for social and environmental impact.\n\nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. SUMMARY:ISS Leadership Programme
DESCRIPTION:Lead with impact in a changing global landscape\nGlobal challenges are becoming more complex\, while funding and support for international cooperation are increasingly under pressure. This raises urgent questions for organizations working in development: how do you prepare for an uncertain future\, and how can you effectively integrate the latest social science insights into your policies and programmes? \nThis executive leadership programme is designed to help you navigate that complexity and strengthen your organisation’s impact in a rapidly changing world. \nAbout the programme\nThe programme starts on Tuesday\, 1 September 2026 at 15:00 and runs until the final session on 15 December 2026. It consists of eight sessions delivered in a hybrid format\, allowing participants to combine in-person and online learning. \nThe ISS Leadership Programme includes four face-to-face workshops in The Hague\, each lasting 2.5 hours\, alongside four online sessions of 1.5 hours. While in-person participation is encouraged\, all sessions can also be attended digitally\, making full remote participation possible. \nWith a group size of 15 to 20 participants\, the programme offers an interactive and focused learning environment for senior professionals from across the international development sector. \nDeveloped as part of the ISS Leadership Programme and in close collaboration with the Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre\, the course connects key themes such as resilience\, risk\, vulnerability\, and sustainable development. Participants are encouraged to translate insights directly into action within their own organisations. \nWho should attend\nThis course is aimed at experienced professionals with at least ten years of experience in international development. It is particularly relevant for managers\, leaders\, strategists\, monitoring and evaluation specialists\, and business developers. \nParticipants typically come from donor agencies\, international NGOs\, think tanks\, philanthropic foundations\, development consultancies\, and international development banks. The programme is also well suited for directors\, board members\, and management teams looking to strengthen their strategic leadership. \nWhat you will gain\nThroughout the programme\, you will develop the knowledge\, skills\, and mindset needed to increase your organization’s impact. You will learn how to move beyond linear approaches and adopt more adaptive forms of programming\, drawing on complexity thinking to better address real-world challenges. You will gain insights into how development efforts can be strengthened by anticipating future risks and enhancing societal resilience\, while also learning from best practices across organizations. \nIn addition\, the programme focuses on practical skill-building. You will learn how to identify blind spots within your organization\, engage constructively with donors and investors\, and create safe and inclusive work environments where innovation is encouraged. \nOn a personal level\, the programme supports your development as a leader. It helps you build the confidence and creativity needed to challenge existing structures and to foster a more open and learning-oriented organizational culture. \nLearning experience\nThe learning experience is highly interactive and designed to encourage exchange between participants. You will work in a small group setting that offers space for reflection\, discussion\, and peer learning. Participants are invited to bring a colleague to one of the sessions\, and those joining from abroad can take part in an additional online intervision session at no extra cost. \nBeyond the sessions themselves\, you will become part of a dynamic network of peers and gain access to the ISS alumni community. \nPractical details\nEach session requires approximately two hours of preparation.
