Visitors are invited to join a panel discussion with speakers from the Asser Institute and NGOs who have taken real cases to court on issues such as gender equality and the legality of arms exports. Established in 1899\, the PCA was the first permanent intergovernmental organization for the peaceful settlement of disputes. The ICJ\, established in 1945\, is the principal judicial organ of the UN; it settles legal disputes between states and provides advisory opinions on legal questions. With its focus on peace and understanding through a common second language\, a visit to the institute gives new insight in the auxiliary language Esperanto\, and a new perspective on the meaning of equality within the context of international communication. On the Just Peace Open Day\, the institute welcomes you to drop by its library during the day\, between 11:00 and 14:00. You are also welcome to join one of the 45-minute introductory Esperanto lessons. \nRijksmuseum de Gevangenpoort\nFor centuries\, the Prison Gate functioned as both the prison and courthouse of the mighty Court of Holland. The museum offers guided tours in which visitors discover how criminals were imprisoned\, tried\, and punished throughout the centuries. Hear directly from human rights defenders currently in the Netherlands as they share their experiences\, challenges\, and the importance of international solidarity. During the Just Peace Open Day\, visitors can join one of two guided tours of an exhibition at the NGO DEI Gallery featuring selected artworks from the workshop\, curated by young artist Victor Gram. Visit the Public Gallery overlooking the Courtroom\, join an interactive presentation and Q&A with an ICC representative\, and learn how the Court works to bring justice to victims of some of the world’s most serious crimes. On the Just Peace Open Day\, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm\, ICMP will open its doors to the public. SUMMARY:Civil engagement in donor countries - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIn the context of shifting geopolitics\, changing narratives around humanitarian action and declining funding\, reflection is happening on the diverse roles different humanitarian actors have. A recent report by ICVA outlines the complementarity of various actors in the system. INGOs\, as one group of  those actors\, see much diversity: they include large\, federated organisations\, specialised technical agencies\, some multi-mandated\, others purely humanitarian. Their operational models also differ: exclusively through partnerships\, direct implementation\, or a mix of modalities. In the present context\, some INGOs are exploring specifically how to strengthen their financial and political support base in the donor countries where their headquarters are based. \nThe first session in this series on ‘The role of INGOs in a localised system‘ concluded that a future role for INGOs is shaped differently. It should be smaller\, less focused on implementation and more as ‘connectors’: fund managers\, risk absorbers\, technical support providers. In addition\, a key function of the role is about exerting influence: global political advocacy\, defending humanitarian principles\, sustaining public support for humanitarian action in donor countries\, and fundraising. This session explores how organisations fulfil these roles. It will also look more broadly of the history of creating ‘draagvlak’ (support) in the Netherlands. It aims to conclude with identifying some radical ideas for engagement. \nObjectives of the session: \n\nInforming on various approaches to strengthening international solidarity in donor countries\, historically and practically\nInspire through examples on how INGOs engage constituencies in the Netherlands\nExplore novel opportunities for engagement within or across INGOs\n\nSpeakers \n\nSera Koolmees\, Senior Communications Officer\, Partos\nCyrille Koolhaas\, Head of Fundraising\, Stichting Vluchteling\nOther speakers\, tbc\n\nWho is this session for?\nAs with all KUNO sessions\, anyone working in or alongside the humanitarian field is welcome.
