SUMMARY:Faith\, Freedom\, and the Fracturing of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling fireside chat exploring the urgent and interlinked challenges facing democracies today\, from the shrinking space for civil society and threats to freedom of religion\, to deepening polarisation and democratic backsliding. \nAcross the world\, democracies are under strain. Civil society is increasingly under pressure\, spaces for dissent and dialogue are narrowing\, freedom of religion is being contested\, and polarisation is shaping political discourse. While these dynamics may play out differently in different contexts\, their echoes are global\, and deeply concerning. \nThis conversation begins from the lived realities of India\, where activists\, journalists\, and religious minorities face rising restrictions\, but it does not end there. We also reflect on the Netherlands\, our host country\, where debates around civil liberties\, migration\, and inclusion reveal similar tensions. While these concerns are deeply felt in India\, they resonate just as strongly in the Netherlands and across the globe. In this moderated conversation with Marieke Koekkoek (Volt)\, Fatimazhra Belhirch (D66) and Isa Kahraman (NSC)\, we will reflect on these concerning trends\, drawing connections between the local and the international. \nCome be part of an open and thought-provoking discussion which will invite reflection\, dialogue\, and collective insight. The panel will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nLet’s talk about the future of democracy and why it matters to all of us. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \n🎙️ Format: Panel conversation + Q&A+ networking drinks\n💬 Language: English

SUMMARY:The Future of Solidarity-Based Partnerships with Universities in a Declining Development Sector
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Hague Humanity Hub on October 1\, 2025\, to explore innovative solutions for sustainable partnerships. \nLet’s discuss how collaboration can drive positive change in a changing world. SUMMARY:Communicating with impact: How to bring global citizenship and global issues close and create real engagement for international cooperation
DESCRIPTION:How do you embed global citizenship in your organization\, and how do you create real\, lasting engagement with global issues? How do we bring these topics closer to a wider audience – and how do we also reach young people in the process? During this meeting\, we will share learning experiences and insights on how we as organizations deal with global citizenship. Together\, we are investigating the role of communication in this and how we can give international solidarity more meaning and visibility. A moment to exchange experiences\, gain inspiration and go into depth together. \n  \nWhat can you expect?\nHow do we give global citizenship a meaningful place within our organizations\, at a time when rapid fundraising and marketing strategies often predominate? Is it possible to make room for awareness and involvement\, even if the pressure on short-term results is great? By putting global citizenship more at the heart of our work\, we aim to build broader support and sustainable support for international cooperation. \nBut what does this require of us? Do we need more time\, trust and patience to form real relationships and create lasting engagement on global issues? And how can we engage citizens in an inclusive and meaningful way on topics such as human rights\, democracy\, equality and climate justice? \nIn a previous session\, we already explored a number of insights. This meeting builds on that. Together\, we look for strategies\, inspiration and space to deepen communication and engagement — for more impact\, connection and global citizenship. \n  \nComponents of the meeting\n\nBest Practice | Marcel Catsburg of Woord & Daad discusses how the organization integrates the concept of global citizenship into its policy and how it seeks to connect with its supporters in a communicative way.\nInspirational Talk by creative strategist Ard Lok: What’s the secret of effective communication to engage people in a cause/movement?\nBest Practice | ErnstJan Stroes of Wilde Ganzen explains the steps the organization is taking to give global citizenship a crucial place in its policies and programs.\nExchanging and learning from each other.\n\n  \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \nPlease note: this event was originally posted in Dutch.

SUMMARY:The Global Public Interest Lawyering Program: International Law in Practice
DESCRIPTION:The GPIL International Law in Practice Intensive Program (“GPIL Summer Intensive Program”) provides a hybrid (i.e.\, both in-person and remote) experiential learning opportunity designed to advance practical understanding of public interest lawyering in public international law. In 2025\, the GPIL Summer Intensive Program will be offered from 28 July to 02 August in The Hague (Netherlands)\, known as the “City of Peace and Justice” as it features a range of core institutions in public international law from the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court to international organizations such as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The Hague is also one of the greatest sites of diplomatic exchange in the world and hosts a strong diplomatic presence from a range of States globally. The GPIL Summer Intensive Program will be held at the Hague Humanity Hub\, a center for collaboration and exchange among international civil society organizations active in The Hague. \nOver the course of this condensed week of learning\, participants will have the opportunity to gain a practical foundation in public international law by attending a series of lectures by leading practitioners and legal academics as well as by putting their new-found insights and skills to the test in an international legal advocacy exercise. Although subject to availability and not guaranteed\, The Global Pro Bono Bar Association is also working to facilitate (1) tours of the Peace Palace (site of the International Court of Justice and Permanent Court of Arbitration) as well as of the International Criminal Court for in-person participants; and (2) a virtual tour of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (“OPCW”) for remote participants. \nThe tentative schedule for the GPIL Summer Intensive Program is available at Annex I in this packet and information on how to apply is available at Annex V. As the 2025 GPIL Summer Intensive Program will be the inaugural in-person offering of this program\, The Global Pro Bono Bar Association is conducting the 2025 GPIL Summer Intensive Program with no program fee for both in-person and remote participants. Participants should understand that these early iterations of the GPIL Program remain a work-in-progress and incomplete or imperfect in some ways. Participants should expect technical and other issues to arise and approach participation in the 2025 GPIL Summer Intensive Program with a good measure of patience and humor as the bugs are worked out. Please direct any inquiries on this program to Adina Darbyshire at pgmcoord1@probonobar.org. \nDownload the full programme here \n	REGISTER This link opens in a new tab

She served at the Dutch Embassies in Zimbabwe and Costa Rica (including Honduras\, El Salvador\, Guatemala and Nicaragua). She has been posted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague as Director Sub-Sahara Africa and Ambassador Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. \nHer grandfathers’ resistance activities during WOII and his subsequent experiences as Prisoner of War have motivated Mette throughout her educational and professional career. She chose to focus her Master European Public Administration on international relations and international law. Internships at the Stockholm Peace Research Institute\, Asser Institute for International Law and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) led her to apply for the diplomatic training course in 1998. \nHer commitment to human rights and human dignity for all inspired her to consistently seek positions at Dutch MFA in the field of governance\, human rights\, social justice and international cooperation. When Mette resigned from MFA in 2022\, she had been working zealously in leadership positions for over 10 years. Known for being a ‘modern leader’ within the diplomatic service\, her leadership style had been characterised by a drive to foster thriving teams that realise true differences for others in the world. \nMette’s resignation from MFA followed the manifestation of unacknowledged complex (intergenerational) trauma. Drawing from her personal healing journey and her diplomatic career\, she founded the social enterprise IMind2Lead in 2022. Her recent education in coaching\, trauma\, mental health and well-being at Standford and NICABM have deepened her understanding and commitment. Mette’s belief is that the current uncertain\, polarised and complex world needs a different kind of leadership. Leadership that is being practised from a healthy\, open and conscious mind/body/heart congruence. With IMind2Lead through coaching and community she has been passionately guiding ngo\, public\, diplomatic and corporate mission-driven leaders towards ‘whole leadership’ for change. \nWhat is The Handshake?\nA career inspiration series spotlighting leading voices in peace the justice ecosystem.
