How can EU member states like the Netherlands support Western Balkan democracies in the face of growing geopolitical tensions? \nJoin us on February 26th (17:00-19:00)\, for this year’s first edition of #DemocracyDrinks The Hague\, where we will be joined by: \n\nMarko Makovec\, seasoned Slovenian diplomat\, former Head of Cabinet for the EU’s Enlargement Commissioner\, and one of the leading authorities on the complexities of enlargement within the European Union.\nThijs Reuten\, Dutch MEP and leading advocate against democratic backsliding in the EU and its neighbourhood.\n\nThis edition is organised in collaboration with PAX\, the Network of Sustainable Development and Education\, Free Press Unlimited\, the Dutch Albanian Foundation\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee\, Max van der Stoel Foundation\, and Committee for Humanitarian Intervention in Utrecht\, Amsterdam\, and Leiden. \nAbout Marko Makovec\nMarko Makovec is a Slovenian diplomat and a leading authority on the complexities of EU enlargement. Most recently\, he served as the Head of Cabinet for Ms. Marta Kos\, the Commissioner for Enlargement. Prior to this\, he was the highest-ranking Slovene at the European External Action Service (EEAS)\, as Deputy Managing Director for Managing Directorate Europe. In this capacity\, he expertly oversaw relations with the United Kingdom\, European Economic Area\, Turkey\, and the Western Balkans from 2021 to 2024. \nHe earlier represented Slovenia with distinction as the Permanent Representative to the EU’s Political and Security Committee (2017-2020). He served as Diplomatic Adviser to the Slovenian President (2013-2017)\, and as Principal Foreign Policy Adviser to the Prime Minister (2008-2012)\, acting as chief negotiator for the Arbitration Agreement between Slovenia and Croatia. His illustrious career began with his foundational work as an Adviser to the Director-General (2003-2005)\,as a Delegate to the Working Party for Western Balkans in the EU (2007-2008)\, and as Deputy Head of Mission in Rome. \nAbout Thijs Reuten\nThijs Reuten is a Dutch Member of the European Parliament that has\, since 2021\, served on the Committee of Foreign Affairs\, Delegation to the EU-North Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee\, and the Delegation to the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee\, among others. He played a pivotal role in normalising visa-free travel between Kosovo and the EU\, and has been a leading advocate against democratic backsliding in the EU and its neighbourhood. You will learn how legal and criminal-focused OSINT investigations are conducted\, how OSINT fits within the case-building process\, and which countries and institutions have successfully used open-source methods to document war crimes and mass atrocities. \nThis workshop provides the foundation you need to expand your investigative skills for justice and your human rights portfolio through OSINT. \nPlease keep in mind that tickets for in-person attendance at The Hague Humanity Hub location are limited. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks | Defending Democracy in Georgia: Where to from here?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this year’s last #DemocracyDrinks\, on November 13\, to reflect on Georgia’s fight for democracy and avenues for moving forward.\nIt has already been a year since the Georgian people began courageously protesting the results of an unfair election and the ruling party’s decision to halt the country’s path toward the European Union. In response\, the government has cracked down on protesters\, filled prisons with political opponents\, and sought to silence civil society and independent media – and is now moving to ban opposition parties. \n  \nThe EU – including the Netherlands – has condemned these actions\, freezing parts of Georgia’s EU accession process and reconsidering its cooperation programmes. Yet many argue that more decisive action is needed to support Georgia’s pro-democracy movement. \n  \nJoin us for the next edition of #DemocracyDrinks on 13 November\, where we will reflect on what has happened so far\, and ask experts from and on Georgia what can be done to support the pro-democracy movement moving forward. The panel will be moderated by Amy Eaglestone (Leiden University)\, and we will hear insights from Dinara Gagoshidze (Netherlands Helsinki Committee) and Simona Ognenovska (European Centre for Not-for-Profit Law). \n  \n	Register here! This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \nWhat are the Democracy Drinks?\n#DemocracyDrinks The Hague brings together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy\, rule of law\, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome! \n  \nThis event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \n  \n#DemocracyDrinks were launched in 2018 by Defend Democracy Executive Director Alice Stollmeyer. Over time\, #DemocracyDrinks have expanded their reach and have been organized in Aarhus\, Berlin\, Brussels\, Budapest\, Copenhagen\, Kathmandu\, Montreal\, The Hague and Washington DC\, and soon also in other cities. The events attract a lively mixture of people from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks\, national governments and representations\, academia\, public affairs consultancies\, social businesses and other active citizens. \n  \n\nPhotos – yes or no? \nPlease note that during Democracy Drinks a photographer and/or videographer will be present to take pictures\, for use by the #DemocracyDrinks partners in future marketing efforts. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \n  \nWho are the spotlight speakers?\nInternational Alert – Svenja Wolter\nInternational Alert works at the intersection of climate change\, natural resource management and peacebuilding\, recognising that climate stress often exacerbates conflict\, especially over water\, land\, and livelihoods. \nSvenja will share how International Alert integrates peacebuilding into climate action; from advocacy to on-the-ground programming. Learn how their projects in Nigeria and Kenya inform their efforts to operationalize conflict sensitivity and peace integration within the climate action agenda\, and how they’re influencing climate finance and adaptation policy through networks like Peace@COP and the European Climate Change Platform (ECCP). \n  \nPAX for Peace – Christina Parandii\nPAX for Peace is the largest peace organisation based in the Netherlands. It works globally in conflict zones alongside local partners\, as well as in the Netherlands\, aiming to protect civilians\, end armed conflict\, and build inclusive\, just and peaceful societies.\nChristina will speak about the crucial interlinkages between climate\, environment\, peace\, and security. She’ll highlight why conflict-sensitive climate and environmental policies are essential for achieving just and lasting outcomes in fragile contexts. \n  \nWorld’s Youth for Climate Justice – Mert Kumru\nWY4CJ is s a global campaign taking climate change and human rights to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to get an advisory opinion (AO) to clarify the obligations of states to protect the rights of current and future generations from the adverse effects of climate change. Mert Kumru is the former UN Youth Representative on Human Rights and Security for the Netherlands. He combines his Human Rights background with a variety of climate related themes.
