DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Hague is a city made up of diverse communities\, each with its own characteristics and ambitions. At the same time\, the city faces the urgent challenge of preparing for ongoing climate change while minimizing its own contribution to global warming. In 2024\, more than 100 organisations\, companies\, and resident groups\, together with the municipality\, signed the The Hague Climate Agreement as a contribution to this effort. \nThe shared ambition is to create a climate-neutral and socially resilient city. Achieving this is only possible if as many communities as possible commit to realising this ambition in a fair and just way. The key question is: how can we grow a strong “community of communities” in The Hague that is capable of accelerating the transformation toward a climate-just city in the coming years? \nThis question will be at the heart of the Sustainable Breakfast on Wednesday\, 10 December 2025\, coinciding with Human Rights Day. Together\, we will explore answers and opportunities. To inspire discussion\, Kees Klomp\, author of Ecoliberalism\, will introduce a transformative narrative that can help build a strong community of communities. Following this\, we will engage with various local change-makers about what is needed—and possible—to shape and implement such a transformative story. DESCRIPTION:FEMALE TRAVELER TRAINING\nTo gain awareness and confidence as a female traveler is the core objective of our 1-day Safety for Female Travelers training. The majority of security challenges for men and women serving INGOs are the same. Women are not necessarily more vulnerable than men\, but they do face other types of risks that require specific attention. To address these gender-related risks\, we have developed a female traveler training. This training will be facilitated by women who have extensive experience in living and working overseas and as travelers. Encouragement\, solution-finding\, and awareness are the focus of this day. The film explores the June 2023 Pylos shipwreck\, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in recent European history\, in which more than 600 people drowned in front of a Greek coast guard vessel. \n  \nAbout the Film – Dead Calm: Killing in the Med\nHiding in the crystal-blue waters of the Aegean Sea lies a dark secret. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling fireside chat exploring the urgent and interlinked challenges facing democracies today\, from the shrinking space for civil society and threats to freedom of religion\, to deepening polarisation and democratic backsliding. \nAcross the world\, democracies are under strain. Civil society is increasingly under pressure\, spaces for dissent and dialogue are narrowing\, freedom of religion is being contested\, and polarisation is shaping political discourse. While these dynamics may play out differently in different contexts\, their echoes are global\, and deeply concerning. \nThis conversation begins from the lived realities of India\, where activists\, journalists\, and religious minorities face rising restrictions\, but it does not end there. We also reflect on the Netherlands\, our host country\, where debates around civil liberties\, migration\, and inclusion reveal similar tensions. While these concerns are deeply felt in India\, they resonate just as strongly in the Netherlands and across the globe. DESCRIPTION:About this event\nHow do you navigate an increasingly tense political climate? What tools do we have to strengthen political engagement? \nWith the Dutch parliamentary elections approaching at the end of October\, the question of how to strengthen democratic participation is more relevant than ever. Join us at the October edition of #DemocracyDrinks The Hague\, an evening highlighting tools and approaches that make democracy more engaging\, participatory\, and reflective of diverse voices in society. \nBram van Montfoort from the Dutch Democracy Coalition (NDC) will introduce the DemocratieWijzer\, a tool that helps citizens explore democratic values\, navigate political choices\, and encourage constructive dialogue in the run-up to the elections. Yasmin Haloui from  the Human Security Collective (HSC) will discuss participatory research and innovative methods of engaging young people in discussions on democracy and human rights\, ensuring their perspectives shape political debate and practice. \nThe session will be moderated by Aicha Chaghouani of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC). \n  \nWhat are the Democracy Drinks?\n#DemocracyDrinks The Hague brings together democracy advocates\, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy\, rule of law\, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome! \nThis event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \n  \n#DemocracyDrinks were launched in 2018 by Defend Democracy Executive Director Alice Stollmeyer. Over time\, #DemocracyDrinks have expanded their reach and have been organized in Aarhus\, Berlin\, Brussels\, Budapest\, Copenhagen\, Kathmandu\, Montreal\, The Hague and Washington DC\, and soon also in other cities.
