SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Far-Right Networks: Diffusion and Democratic Impact
DESCRIPTION:A closer look at far-right networks\, focusing on the case study of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India.\nHow do far-right networks embed themselves in cultural\, educational\, and political institutions? How do they translate grassroots presence into electoral power and ideological influence? And what explains their resilience across very different political contexts? \nThis event will examine the organizational strategies that enable far-right movements to build legitimacy\, extend their reach across society\, and sustain long-term mobilization. \nTo explore these questions\, the event will showcase the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India as a central case study. As one of the world’s largest and most enduring far-right organizations\, the RSS offers a particularly revealing lens onto the mechanics of far-right mobilization: \n\nIts century-long historical development\nIts layered ecosystem of affiliated organizations\nIts decisive influence on contemporary Indian politics.\n\nYet the RSS is not an outlier. Its strategies resonate with\, and in some cases prefigure\, patterns visible in far-right movements across Europe\, the Americas\, and beyond\, from the cultivation of civil society fronts to the fusion of nationalism\, majoritarian identity\, and disinformation. \nMeet the speaker! \nSruti Bala is an Associate Professor in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests revolve around the intersections of culture\, performance\, and politics. Dr.Bala published studies on a wide range of topics including nonviolent protest\, artistic activism\, feminist and postcolonial/decolonial theories. She is a member of the collective International Solidarity for Academic Freedom in India (InSAF India)\, which advocates for collective academic freedoms and building global solidarities with Indian and international peoples’ movements for radical social\, economic and ecological justice. \nTogether we will reflect on what these networks mean for democracy\, pluralism\, and civil society today\, and how their growing visibility is reshaping political landscapes worldwide. \n	Register now

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x KUNO: Lost Land
DESCRIPTION:Just Peace Movie Night x KUNO: Lost Land \nJoin us for a powerful evening organised by KUNO and The Hague Humanity Hub\, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series. \nOn 26 May\, we will screen Lost Land (Harà Watan)\, a gripping fictional feature by Japanese director Akio Fujimoto. The film exposes the trauma of displacement and decades of persecution faced by the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Told through the eyes of children\, it sheds light on the lived experiences of refugees by blending harsh reality with elements of fantasy\, drawing attention to a humanitarian crisis that is too often overlooked. \nAbout the film – Lost Land \nIn the hope of reuniting with their scattered family\, four-year-old Shafi and his nine-year-old sister Somira leave a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh and embark on a perilous journey to Malaysia. Along the way\, the children encounter natural forces\, exploitation through cross-border trafficking\, and constant challenges that test their resilience. \nLost Land is the first feature made entirely in the Rohingya language and is shot at the eye-level of its young protagonists. Featuring more than two hundred Rohingya participants\, the film offers a powerful and immersive portrayal of their collective experience. \nLost Land was nominated for the Grand Jury Fiction Award at the Movies that Matter Festival 2026. \nThe movie screening will be followed by a moderated panel discussion in collaboration with KUNO. We will announce the speakers soon! \nProgramme \n\n18:15 – 18:45 – Walk-in & drinks\n18:45 – 20:45 – Introduction and film screening: Lost Land\n20:45 – 21:30 – Moderated discussion and Q&A\n\nThis evening invites you to watch\, reflect\, and engage in dialogue on border violence\, human rights and belonging. \n\nTickets: €5\,50 – The ticket price includes a free drink.\nLocation: The Hague Humanity Hub\nDate & Time: 26 May 2026 | 18:15 – 21:30\n\nAbout Just Peace Movie Nights \nJust Peace Movie Nights is an event series organised by The Hague Humanity Hub in collaboration with partner organisations from The Hague’s peace and justice ecosystem. SUMMARY:People Centred Justice as a Early Warning and Prevention Tool
DESCRIPTION:How can justice kickstart real prevention and make a difference together? Join us for this interactive conversation on 6th May!\nAcross the world\, tensions and conflicts often begin with everyday problems that go unanswered—issues like disputes over land\, housing\, family matters\, access to services\, or discrimination. When these problems accumulate\, they can erode trust and deepen social divides long before any violence becomes visible. \nThis interactive session explores how people‑centred justice—justice that is accessible\, fair\, and grounded in people’s daily realities—can help identify and address these early warning signs. By resolving everyday grievances early\, justice systems can help prevent tensions from escalating and strengthen community resilience. \nAlthough the examples will draw from conflict‑affected places such as the DRC\, Ethiopia\, and Nigeria\, the discussion will also highlight why these lessons matter in more stable societies\, including the Netherlands\, where signs of mistrust\, inequality\, and polarisation are increasingly visible. \n📅 Date: 6 May 2026\n🕘 Time: 09:00–10:30\n📍 Venue: The Hague Humanity Hub\n🧃 Doors open at 08:30 for welcome breakfast \nWhy Attend?\nJoin practitioners\, policymakers\, students\, and the wider public for a conversation that asks: \n\nWhat everyday justice problems signal rising tensions?\nWhat kinds of justice responses actually help prevent escalation?\nHow can community-level and formal justice actors work together more effectively?\nWhat can the Netherlands learn from fragile contexts—and what can it offer in return?\n\nMeet the Speakers \n\nClaudine Tsongo – Dynamique des femmes juristes (DRC)\n\nHow unresolved everyday grievances in eastern DRC contribute to wider conflict—and what community‑level justice can do to prevent escalation.\n\n\nMoncef Kartas – Head of UNDP’s Peace Support Facility (Ethiopia)\n\nHow patterns in everyday disputes can serve as early warning signals in places where formal justice systems have collapsed\, and what effective prevention efforts look like in practice.\n\n\n\nMore information about the speakers to be shared soon. \nWho Should Join?\nThis session is open to all: \n\nJustice\, development\, and peacebuilding practitioners\nPolicymakers and diplomats\nStudents and researchers\nAnyone interested in justice\, prevention\, or social cohesion\n\nThis event is a partnership between The Hague Humanity Hub\, UNDP\, Cordaid and the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS) and is one of the official side events of the Justice Matters Conference by the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (Hiil) taking place from the 6th – 8th May 2026. \n	Register here for in-person attendance\n	\n	Register here to attend online

SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Elections\, Legitimacy\, and Protests in Serbia
DESCRIPTION:Can Change Happen Within Distrusted Systems? \nIn many contemporary democracies\, formal institutions continue to function while public trust in them steadily declines. This creates a fundamental tension: if citizens no longer believe in the fairness or effectiveness of elections\, can those same elections still serve as a meaningful mechanism for change? \nThe situation in Serbia illustrates this dilemma vividly\, as waves of student-led protests and broader civic mobilization following the tragedy in Novi Sad raise questions not only about political outcomes\, but about the legitimacy of the processes themselves. \nAt the same time\, this issue resonates beyond national borders\, shaping debates within the European Union\, and in countries like the Netherlands\, about how to support democracy and rule of law in contexts where its core mechanisms are formally present but substantively contested. \nThis #DemocracyDrinks edition is organised in collaboration with The Serbian Diaspora in The Netherlands\, where you will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with serbian students\, the diaspora\, and see a small exhibition from the protests. \nJoin us on April 30th (17:00-19:00) for the #DemocracyDrinks The Hague and engage with \n\nOlga Pantić: She is coordinator of the Marketing Centre at Novi Sad University working on political articulation\, creation of political narrative and campaigns.\nMiloš Janjić: He is a freelance multimedia artist\, dancer and cultural worker from Belgrade. Since 2019 he has been actively engaged in the functioning of the self-organised alternative cultural center Magacin.\nRužica Jaćimović: She participated in democratic processes in the 1990s and later worked for the first democratic government. She brings both lived and professional perspective to the discussion\, shaped by her long-standing engagement with democratic change.\n\nWhat are the #DemocracyDrinks? \n#DemocracyDrinks is an informal\, recurring conversation and networking series bringing together people working on democracy\, peace\, justice\, and democratic participation. \nThe format is intentionally simple: open\, dialogue-led conversations in a relaxed setting. #DemocracyDrinks The Hague provides space to connect across sectors\, test ideas\, explore emerging questions\, and reflect collectively on democratic challenges beyond formal panels or presentations. \nLaunched by Defend Democracy in Brussels in 2018\, #DemocracyDrinks now takes place in cities around the world. Editions in The Hague have brought together a diverse mix of practitioners from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks\, government\, and civil society. SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Biodiversity in the City of Peace & Justice
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, share & learn about what different organisations are doing to make the world more peaceful and sustainable at the Community Drinks\n\nWhat if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away? \nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. As environmental pressures intensify worldwide\, conversations about how we protect and preserve the natural world are becoming increasingly urgent\, and they belong not only in laboratories and policy rooms but also in our communities. \nThe theme of ”Biodiversity & Preservation” encourages us to think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems\, societies\, and global policy. Biodiversity loss is not only an environmental challenge; it is deeply linked to human rights\, food security\, climate resilience\, and social stability. Protecting ecosystems means protecting communities and futures. \nJoin The April edition of the Community Drinks for a fruitful conversation that may spark collaborations\, inspire new perspectives\, or simply deepen our collective awareness of the living systems that sustain us. \nWe would like to explore some of the following questions through the selected spotlights for the evening: \n\nWhat does biodiversity mean in an urban city like The Hague\, and how can cities become spaces that actively support ecological diversity?\nHow are local ecosystems\, from the North Sea coastline to urban green spaces\, changing\, and what can communities do to help protect them?\nWhat role can residents\, civil society organizations\, and international institutions in The Hague play in preserving biodiversity at both local and global levels?\nHow can urban planning\, architecture\, and public spaces contribute to healthier ecosystems and more biodiversity-friendly cities?\nHow can international policy conversations taking place in The Hague connect more directly to local environmental action?\nAnd finally\, how can we foster a stronger sense of connection between people\, place\, and the natural systems that sustain life in and around our city?\n\nThrough short spotlights and open discussion\, the evening aims to create space for reflection\, inspiration\, and collaboration across disciplines and communities. \nWho are the speakers? \n\nGreenAnt\nGreenAnt is a climate-tech company leveraging satellite data and artificial intelligence to tackle environmental risks. They focus on providing cutting-edge solutions for climate risk management\, disaster response\, and sustainability analysis.\nOne Acre Fund\nOne Acre Fund works with 5.6 million smallholder farmer households to equip them with the supplies and training they need to thrive. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Solidarity with Belarus & Lessons in Resilience
DESCRIPTION:This edition will feature Ales Bialiatski\, Nobel Peace Prize laureate & Belarusian democracy and human rights defender.\nHow can civil society continue defending human rights when repression becomes the norm? And what role can international partners play in ensuring that struggles for freedom are not forgotten? \nFor decades\, Belarusian civil society organisations have worked under severe political pressure\, documenting abuses\, defending political prisoners\, and supporting victims of repression. Since the 2020 crackdown\, many organisations have been forced into exile\, yet their work continues across borders. \nThis #DemocracyDrinks edition is organised in collaboration with Article 19 and will bring together Belarusian and Dutch civil society actors to reflect on how international solidarity can sustain human rights work under repression. It will also explore how partnerships with organisations in the Netherlands and across Europe help ensure that the situation in Belarus remains visible and that those defending rights are not left isolated. \nJoin us on March 30th (17:00-19:00) for the #DemocracyDrinks The Hague\, where we will be joined by: \nSpeakers \n\nAles Bialiatski\, Human Rights Centre Viasna\nTBC\, Dutch Civil Society Representative\n\nModerator \n\nJoanna Szymańska\, Head of Programmes and Strategy\, ARTICLE 19 Europe\n\n  \nAbout Ales Bialiatski \nAles Bialiatski founded the organisation Viasna (Spring) to provide support for the incarcerated demonstrators and their families that then evolved into a human rights organisation focused on documenting the authorities’ abuses and torture of political prisoners. As a result of his work\, the government authorities sentenced him to several years’ imprisonment for alleged tax evasion. In June 2021\, in the wake of the massive demonstrations against President Lukashenko’s dictatorship\, he was again jailed without trial or conviction. He was still in prison when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. \n  \nWhat are the #DemocracyDrinks? SUMMARY:Non-Violent Communication: Giraffe or Jackal?
DESCRIPTION:Join the workshop and explore a different way of communicating. \nA job interview feels tense. A team discussion turns sensitive. A conversation about values\, diversity or social impact suddenly becomes uncomfortable. \nThis interactive workshop offers a first introduction to Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Rather than promising quick fixes\, this session creates awareness of how language shapes connection – and how small shifts in communication influence the quality of dialogue. \nUsing the metaphor of the “giraffe” and the “jackal”\, you explore the difference between reactive and connecting communication styles. Through guided reflection and short practical exercises\, you practise distinguishing observation from interpretation\, noticing emotional triggers\, and expressing yourself with more clarity. \nThe focus stays on awareness and insight: recognising patterns in yourself and in professional interactions such as interviews\, teamwork\, networking or value-driven conversations. You leave with a clearer understanding of NVC principles and concrete examples of how they apply in daily work situations. \nThe workshop is guided by an experienced NVC trainer who works with professionals in international and multicultural contexts. The session combines brief explanations with interactive exercises in a safe and engaging setting. \nCurious whether you speak more giraffe or jackal? \nJoin the conversation on March 20th (14:00-16:00) and explore a different way of communicating. The workshop is organised by JobOn and The Hague Humanity Hub. \n	Sign up here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Community Drinks | Picture Power: How Stories Shape Change
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Thrusday\, March 19th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals using storytelling to advocate for\, and drive\, positive change. \nIn a city like The Hague\, where dialogue\, justice\, and diplomacy shape the global stage\, visual advocacy and storytelling offer a powerful way to humanize complex issues. Images\, maps\, data visualizations\, and narrative design can make institutional processes more approachable\, bringing clarity to subjects that might otherwise feel abstract or distant. Visual storytelling cuts across language and cultural barriers\, inviting broader participation and fostering empathy in a place where diverse voices meet. \nWhen used thoughtfully\, visual advocacy not only communicates information but also amplifies impact. In The Hague’s ecosystem compelling visuals can illuminate the lived experiences behind legal arguments\, highlight patterns that inform policy decisions\, and energize public engagement. By blending art\, narrative\, and evidence\, visual storytelling helps bridge the gap between global challenges and the people working to address them. \nThe March Edition of the Community Drinks will explore some of the following questions: \n\nIn what ways can visuals help bridge the gap between policy discussions and lived human experiences?\nHow do we represent people and their stories ethically\, especially when dealing with sensitive topics like conflict\, justice\, or human rights?\nHow can visuals avoid oversimplifying or sensationalizing complex issues?\nWhat role can creative storytelling play in sustaining open\, democratic societies?\n\nWho are the speakers? \n\nGregg The Artivist\nGregg is a storyteller and activist using art to cut through noise\, challenge broken systems\, and reconnect us to what matters.\nHuman Rights in The Picture\nHuman Rights in the Picture is a non-profit organisation that advocates for human rights through visual storytelling. The organisation shines a light on human rights violations\, injustices and inequalities through film\, music\, photography and other forms of art\, and gives a voice to victims of human rights violations.\nMovies That Matter\nMTM’s mission is to open eyes to human rights. They use film to stir the debate on human rights\, sustainability and fight against injustice. Film has the unprecedented capacity to raise awareness and provide new insight.\n\nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \n  \n	Reserve a spot This link opens in a new tab

It offers a shared framing and practical lens that can help inform ongoing dialogue within our community. \nThe session brings together actors from across finance\, peacebuilding\, innovation\, and enterprise. SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth & Peace with Jonathan van Varik
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn this next edition of FPC\, we will discuss the unique perspective and position that youth can and should play in advancing peace from the local to the global level. Our guest speaker for this FPC edition is Jonathan van Varik\, youth worker\, freelance peace-builder\, and the lead coordinator of the 2026 Youth Peace Summit! With Jonathan\, we will discuss how we can  connect youth\, institutions\, organizations\, and governments in dialogue\, innovation\, and inclusion to empower young people worldwide to become active creators of peace. Within that context\, we will explore the contribution of the Youth Peace Summit\, its 2025 Youth Peace Manifesto\, and the summit’s innovative infrastructure for connecting youth peace-builders year-round\, which will be launched at the upcoming 2026 summit! Join us for an informal conversation intended to bring peacebuilders\, enthusiasts\, and citizens together to connect\, share experiences\, and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform for Security and the Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x GHRD: SOLD. A Child Trafficked
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout SOLD\nSOLD. A Child Trafficked\, a powerful 2012 film that sheds light on the realities of child trafficking and exploitation. \nShot mainly in Nepal\, it follows the stories of several survivors of child trafficking who fell victim to sexual slavery in brothels across India. The movie highlights the socioeconomic factors that lead to child trafficking. Most victims are young girls belonging to the Tamang ethnic group of Nepal\, where resource scarcity\, severe poverty and social ostracization drive family members to sell their daughters\, nieces and cousins into sexual slavery. \nSOLD spotlights the price that is paid by young girls and women when society turns a blind eye to predatory dynamics and structural drivers heightened by social and financial hardships. \n\nSpeakers:\n\nRishi Chamman: Filmmaker and documentary director of SOLD\nRinku Kalsy: Documentary maker and director of SOLD\nConny Rijken: National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings and Sexual Violence against Children\nZoe de Melo: Programme manager focusing on ending sexual exploitation of children at Terre des Hommes Netherlands\nModerator: Bianca Cojocaru\n\n  \n	Get your tickets here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Peace & Justice Beyond the Bubble
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \n  \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Tuesday\, February 17th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals working on making peace and justice more accessible for everyone. \n  \nThe Hague is both the International City of Peace & Justice and a city where neighbourhoods can be socio-economically and culturally divided. While hundreds of institutions work on peace\, justice\, human rights\, and security\, the field can often feel closed-off\, technical\, elite\, or geographically distant from the lived realities of many residents. \nThis edition of Community Drinks takes place right before the municipal elections\, making it a timely moment to reflect on who feels included in the city’s peace and justice ecosystem\, and who does not. \nWho are the speakers?\n\nNetwerk Haagse Helpers\n\nThe Haagse Helpers is a community of volunteers who are building a socially connected city. Young people help fellow citizens\, inspire each other\, and flourish themselves. The Haagse Helpers pay attention to raising awareness among young people to contribute in and to the city. In addition to doing volunteer work\, we have fixed monthly activities\, and we also offer workshops and training to volunteers to strengthen the community’s feelings even more. \n\nLeiden University\n\nLeiden University’s Campus The Hague is the home to teaching and research focused on international law\, governance\, urban issues\, global affairs\, and health—the series brings together academics\, students\, practitioners\, and citizens to explore inclusive approaches to building peaceful societies. Leiden University will be represented by Maja Vodopivec\, Senior University Lecturer at Leiden University College. Drawing on her background in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina\, her PhD research in Tokyo\, and her teaching in peace and conflict studies\, Maja co-founded Fireside Peace Chats to counter increasing securitization in academic discourse and reconnect discussions of peace with lived realities in the world’s capital of peace and justice. \nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nMore information about the speakers to be shared shortly. \n	Register here! SUMMARY:Blue Drinks x Climate Justice Community
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us on January 29 for the first 2026 edition of Blue Drinks at The Hague Humanity Hub\nFor our first gathering of 2026\, the Climate Justice Community Drinks is teaming up with Blue Drinks at the Hub to bridge the gap between climate action and water justice. \nLast year\, many of us sat together to reflect on the hurdles we faced and the lessons we learned. Now\, we are shifting our focus forward. We want to hear about your aspirations\, your big plans\, and your hopes for the months ahead. \nWater is often missing within climate conversations and that is why this collaboration is so important. While it’s frequently buried in technical reports or sector-specific silos\, we know that water justice is a deeply social and political issue. It’s about access\, equality\, and resilience\, and it touches every single one of us regardless of our discipline. \nThe evening will be a relaxed space to connect\, hear from a few experts in the field\, share reflections on why water justice matters more than ever\, and trade goals for the coming year. SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x Guarding Gaia
DESCRIPTION:Just Peace Movie Night: Guarding Gaia\nJoin us for a thought-provoking evening organised by Human Rights in The Picture\, Lawyers for Lawyers and The Hague Humanity Hub\, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series. \n  \nOn 28 January\, we screen the documentary Guarding Gaia\, which exposes the risk that environmental lawyers face in their everyday work. They represent marginalised groups in cases involving oil exploitation\, deforestation\, wildlife trafficking\, mining and other environmental harms. By holding powerful economic actors to account\, they become targets themselves. The documentary explores their daily work\, often with limited resources and in isolation\, facing growing risks of physical attacks\, harassment and intimidation from state actors\, organised crime and other hostile groups. \n  \n🎬 About the Film – Guarding Gaia\nGuarding Gaia is a 30-minute documentary produced by Human Rights in the Picture. The film is a central component of a two-year campaign by Lawyers for Lawyers to support legal professionals at risk who work on the front lines of climate justice. Through this campaign\, Lawyers for Lawyers aims to raise awareness about the crucial role these lawyers play\, advocate for their safety\, and call for greater international support so they can continue their essential work. \n  \nThe movie screening will be followed by a moderated discussion in collaboration with Lawyers for Lawyers and Human Rights in the Picture. The confirmed speakers are: \n\nRitwick Dutta\, environmental lawyer from India\, founder of LIFE\nTara Fiechter\, Lawyers for Lawyers\nNadia Sánchez Castillo-Winckels\, Climate Legal Consulting\nSjoerd Lopik\, partner De Roos / research fellow Leiden University\n\n  \n	Get your ticket here!
