SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Biodiversity in the City of Peace & Justice
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, share & learn about what different organisations are doing to make the world more peaceful and sustainable at the Community Drinks\n\nWhat if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away? \nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Thrusday\, April 16th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals that think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems and global policies. \nFrom coastal dunes and migratory birds to urban gardens and pollinators\, biodiversity surrounds us—even in the heart of a global city like The Hague! As environmental pressures intensify worldwide\, conversations about how we protect and preserve the natural world are becoming increasingly urgent\, and they belong not only in laboratories and policy rooms but also in our communities. \nThe theme of ”Biodiversity & Preservation” encourages us to think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems\, societies\, and global policy. Biodiversity loss is not only an environmental challenge; it is deeply linked to human rights\, food security\, climate resilience\, and social stability. Protecting ecosystems means protecting communities and futures. \nJoin The April edition of the Community Drinks for a fruitful conversation that may spark collaborations\, inspire new perspectives\, or simply deepen our collective awareness of the living systems that sustain us. \nWe would like to explore some of the following questions through the selected spotlights for the evening: \n\nWhat does biodiversity mean in an urban city like The Hague\, and how can cities become spaces that actively support ecological diversity?\nHow are local ecosystems\, from the North Sea coastline to urban green spaces\, changing\, and what can communities do to help protect them?\nWhat role can residents\, civil society organizations\, and international institutions in The Hague play in preserving biodiversity at both local and global levels?\nHow can urban planning\, architecture\, and public spaces contribute to healthier ecosystems and more biodiversity-friendly cities?\nHow can international policy conversations taking place in The Hague connect more directly to local environmental action?\nAnd finally\, how can we foster a stronger sense of connection between people\, place\, and the natural systems that sustain life in and around our city?\n\nThrough short spotlights and open discussion\, the evening aims to create space for reflection\, inspiration\, and collaboration across disciplines and communities. \nWho are the speakers? \n\nGreenAnt\nGreenAnt is a climate-tech company leveraging satellite data and artificial intelligence to tackle environmental risks. They focus on providing cutting-edge solutions for climate risk management\, disaster response\, and sustainability analysis.\nOne Acre Fund\nOne Acre Fund works with 5.6 million smallholder farmer households to equip them with the supplies and training they need to thrive. They put Farmers First in everything they do\, helping them grow more food\, plant more trees\, and earn more money from their harvests.\nSpace4Good\nSpace4Good is a team of impact-driven data scientists\, remote sensing & GIS experts\, software developers as well as environmental and urban planners using their unique skills and experience for social and environmental impact.\n\nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nPrivacy Policy \nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Solidarity with Belarus & Lessons in Resilience
DESCRIPTION:This edition will feature Ales Bialiatski\, Nobel Peace Prize laureate & Belarusian democracy and human rights defender.\nHow can civil society continue defending human rights when repression becomes the norm? And what role can international partners play in ensuring that struggles for freedom are not forgotten? \nFor decades\, Belarusian civil society organisations have worked under severe political pressure\, documenting abuses\, defending political prisoners\, and supporting victims of repression. Since the 2020 crackdown\, many organisations have been forced into exile\, yet their work continues across borders. \nThis #DemocracyDrinks edition is organised in collaboration with Article 19 and will bring together Belarusian and Dutch civil society actors to reflect on how international solidarity can sustain human rights work under repression. It will also explore how partnerships with organisations in the Netherlands and across Europe help ensure that the situation in Belarus remains visible and that those defending rights are not left isolated. \nJoin us on March 30th (17:00-19:00) for the #DemocracyDrinks The Hague\, where we will be joined by: \nSpeakers \n\nAles Bialiatski\, Human Rights Centre Viasna\nTBC\, Dutch Civil Society Representative\n\nModerator \n\nJoanna Szymańska\, Head of Programmes and Strategy\, ARTICLE 19 Europe\n\n  \nAbout Ales Bialiatski \nAles Bialiatski founded the organisation Viasna (Spring) to provide support for the incarcerated demonstrators and their families that then evolved into a human rights organisation focused on documenting the authorities’ abuses and torture of political prisoners. As a result of his work\, the government authorities sentenced him to several years’ imprisonment for alleged tax evasion. In June 2021\, in the wake of the massive demonstrations against President Lukashenko’s dictatorship\, he was again jailed without trial or conviction. He was still in prison when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. \n  \nWhat are the #DemocracyDrinks? \n#DemocracyDrinks is an informal\, recurring conversation and networking series bringing together people working on democracy\, peace\, justice\, and democratic participation. \nThe format is intentionally simple: open\, dialogue-led conversations in a relaxed setting. #DemocracyDrinks The Hague provides space to connect across sectors\, test ideas\, explore emerging questions\, and reflect collectively on democratic challenges beyond formal panels or presentations. \nLaunched by Defend Democracy in Brussels in 2018\, #DemocracyDrinks now takes place in cities around the world. Editions in The Hague have brought together a diverse mix of practitioners from NGOs\, international institutions\, think tanks\, government\, and civil society. The Hague series is co-organised by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC)\, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). \n  \nPhotos – disclaimer. \nPlease note that a photographer and/or videographer may be present during #DemocracyDrinks. SUMMARY:Non-Violent Communication: Giraffe or Jackal?
DESCRIPTION:Join the workshop and explore a different way of communicating. \nA job interview feels tense. A team discussion turns sensitive. A conversation about values\, diversity or social impact suddenly becomes uncomfortable. \nThis interactive workshop offers a first introduction to Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Rather than promising quick fixes\, this session creates awareness of how language shapes connection – and how small shifts in communication influence the quality of dialogue. \nUsing the metaphor of the “giraffe” and the “jackal”\, you explore the difference between reactive and connecting communication styles. Through guided reflection and short practical exercises\, you practise distinguishing observation from interpretation\, noticing emotional triggers\, and expressing yourself with more clarity. \nThe focus stays on awareness and insight: recognising patterns in yourself and in professional interactions such as interviews\, teamwork\, networking or value-driven conversations. You leave with a clearer understanding of NVC principles and concrete examples of how they apply in daily work situations. \nThe workshop is guided by an experienced NVC trainer who works with professionals in international and multicultural contexts. The session combines brief explanations with interactive exercises in a safe and engaging setting. \nCurious whether you speak more giraffe or jackal? \nJoin the conversation on March 20th (14:00-16:00) and explore a different way of communicating. The workshop is organised by JobOn and The Hague Humanity Hub. \n	Sign up here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Community Drinks | Picture Power: How Stories Shape Change
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Thrusday\, March 19th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals using storytelling to advocate for\, and drive\, positive change. \nIn a city like The Hague\, where dialogue\, justice\, and diplomacy shape the global stage\, visual advocacy and storytelling offer a powerful way to humanize complex issues. Images\, maps\, data visualizations\, and narrative design can make institutional processes more approachable\, bringing clarity to subjects that might otherwise feel abstract or distant. Visual storytelling cuts across language and cultural barriers\, inviting broader participation and fostering empathy in a place where diverse voices meet. \nWhen used thoughtfully\, visual advocacy not only communicates information but also amplifies impact. In The Hague’s ecosystem compelling visuals can illuminate the lived experiences behind legal arguments\, highlight patterns that inform policy decisions\, and energize public engagement. By blending art\, narrative\, and evidence\, visual storytelling helps bridge the gap between global challenges and the people working to address them. \nThe March Edition of the Community Drinks will explore some of the following questions: \n\nIn what ways can visuals help bridge the gap between policy discussions and lived human experiences?\nHow do we represent people and their stories ethically\, especially when dealing with sensitive topics like conflict\, justice\, or human rights?\nHow can visuals avoid oversimplifying or sensationalizing complex issues?\nWhat role can creative storytelling play in sustaining open\, democratic societies?\n\nWho are the speakers? \n\nGregg The Artivist\nGregg is a storyteller and activist using art to cut through noise\, challenge broken systems\, and reconnect us to what matters.\nHuman Rights in The Picture\nHuman Rights in the Picture is a non-profit organisation that advocates for human rights through visual storytelling. The organisation shines a light on human rights violations\, injustices and inequalities through film\, music\, photography and other forms of art\, and gives a voice to victims of human rights violations.\nMovies That Matter\nMTM’s mission is to open eyes to human rights. They use film to stir the debate on human rights\, sustainability and fight against injustice. Film has the unprecedented capacity to raise awareness and provide new insight.\n\nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \n  \n	Reserve a spot This link opens in a new tab

Join us for an informal conversation intended to bring peacebuilders\, enthusiasts\, and citizens together to connect\, share experiences\, and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform for Security and the Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Peace & Justice Beyond the Bubble
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. While hundreds of institutions work on peace\, justice\, human rights\, and security\, the field can often feel closed-off\, technical\, elite\, or geographically distant from the lived realities of many residents. \nThis edition of Community Drinks takes place right before the municipal elections\, making it a timely moment to reflect on who feels included in the city’s peace and justice ecosystem\, and who does not. \nWho are the speakers?\n\nNetwerk Haagse Helpers\n\nThe Haagse Helpers is a community of volunteers who are building a socially connected city. Young people help fellow citizens\, inspire each other\, and flourish themselves. The Haagse Helpers pay attention to raising awareness among young people to contribute in and to the city. In addition to doing volunteer work\, we have fixed monthly activities\, and we also offer workshops and training to volunteers to strengthen the community’s feelings even more. \n\nLeiden University\n\nLeiden University’s Campus The Hague is the home to teaching and research focused on international law\, governance\, urban issues\, global affairs\, and health—the series brings together academics\, students\, practitioners\, and citizens to explore inclusive approaches to building peaceful societies. Leiden University will be represented by Maja Vodopivec\, Senior University Lecturer at Leiden University College. Drawing on her background in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina\, her PhD research in Tokyo\, and her teaching in peace and conflict studies\, Maja co-founded Fireside Peace Chats to counter increasing securitization in academic discourse and reconnect discussions of peace with lived realities in the world’s capital of peace and justice. \nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nMore information about the speakers to be shared shortly. \n	Register here! SUMMARY:Blue Drinks x Climate Justice Community
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us on January 29 for the first 2026 edition of Blue Drinks at The Hague Humanity Hub\nFor our first gathering of 2026\, the Climate Justice Community Drinks is teaming up with Blue Drinks at the Hub to bridge the gap between climate action and water justice. \nLast year\, many of us sat together to reflect on the hurdles we faced and the lessons we learned. Now\, we are shifting our focus forward. We want to hear about your aspirations\, your big plans\, and your hopes for the months ahead. \nWater is often missing within climate conversations and that is why this collaboration is so important. While it’s frequently buried in technical reports or sector-specific silos\, we know that water justice is a deeply social and political issue. It’s about access\, equality\, and resilience\, and it touches every single one of us regardless of our discipline. \nThe evening will be a relaxed space to connect\, hear from a few experts in the field\, share reflections on why water justice matters more than ever\, and trade goals for the coming year. Whether you’re a regular at the Hub or joining us for the first time\, come as you are and help us kick off the year with some collective momentum. \nBlue Drinks is an informal networking series bringing together professionals across the climate and environmental sectors to connect and collaborate. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:AI guidelines in communication practice
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally posted in Dutch.\n  \nPartos is organising an interactive session on the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in communications practice. AI offers enormous opportunities\, but also brings challenges and responsibilities. During this session\, we will discuss considerations surrounding AI and potential guidelines and best practices to help communications professionals deploy AI safely\, ethically\, and effectively. \n  \nKeynote Lysanne van de Kamp: 15 considerations for a much-needed conversation about AI use\nAI tools like ChatGPT and image generators seem to have become indispensable in a short time. They offer convenience\, speed\, and creativity at our fingertips. But behind this technological leap lie questions that are much larger than we often realize. In an article\, Lysanne van de Kamp lays out 15 key considerations that invite us to look beyond the benefits alone. \nShe writes about the growing power of Big Tech\, the pressure on democracy and truth\, and the socially unjust conditions in which many AI systems are built. She also addresses the enormous impact on energy\, water use\, and our planet. Furthermore\, she raises questions about the impact of AI on our creativity\, skills\, and mental space—and how this technology is increasingly accelerating our lives. \nFrom ethical dilemmas to spiritual and social reflections: let’s open the conversation together that we as a society urgently need to have. Not out of technophobia\, but out of concern for each other\, for the earth\, and for our future. \n  \nWhat can you expect?\n\nLysanne’s Talk : Ethical Considerations & Practical Tools for Responsible Use of AI in Communication.\nPractical examples and tips from colleagues in the sector. Pum shares their experiences developing policy on AI use.\nSpace to ask questions and share experiences.\nThinking along about ingredients for Partos guidelines.\nThis session is intended for communication professionals in development cooperation who want to use AI in a reliable and ethical way.\n\nRegister and join the conversation about the future of AI communication. \n	Register here! SUMMARY:Mapping Water and Waste from Satellites
DESCRIPTION:About Event\nIn many of the world’s most vulnerable areas\, reliable data on where people access clean water or how waste is managed is simply missing. This data gap makes it incredibly difficult for organisations to plan and deliver effective aid. \nBut what if we could use satellite imagery to fill this data gap? \nKickstartAI is proud to partner with Team 510 of The Netherlands Red Cross for a hands-on mini-hackathon focused on this very challenge. We’re bringing together creative minds to explore how freely available satellite imagery can be used to support humanitarian action. \n  \nIs this for you?\nThis mini hackathon is designed for problem-solvers from diverse backgrounds. We believe the best ideas come from collaboration\, and we strongly encourage you to join if you are a: \n\nData scientist or machine-learning engineer interested in applying your skills to satellite imagery and humanitarian challenges.\nGIS or Remote Sensing Specialist who understands geospatial data and its applications.\nHumanitarian and environmental professionals who can provide crucial real-world context and insights.\n\n  \nWhat’s on the agenda?\nThis hackathon invites participants to explore how satellite images could help: \n\nLocate and monitor water points (wells\, tanks\, or taps) to support WASH planning.\nIdentify signs of poor waste management or pollution — such as reflective plastics or dumpsites visible on bare ground.\n\n  \nIn mixed teams\, participants will brainstorm and assess how feasible these ideas are — what data exists\, what patterns could be visible from space\, what tools or methods might help\, and how such insights could support humanitarian or environmental action. \nTeams will produce a short concept summary outlining their approach and findings for The Red Cross. \nBy joining\, you’ll gain exposure to satellite data interpretation and humanitarian data challenges\, while learning how data science and geospatial tools can make a tangible social impact. \nJoin us for a day of inspiring collaboration and use your skills to make a real impact. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Duurzaam Ontbijt (Sustainable Breakfast)
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Hague is a city made up of diverse communities\, each with its own characteristics and ambitions. At the same time\, the city faces the urgent challenge of preparing for ongoing climate change while minimizing its own contribution to global warming. In 2024\, more than 100 organisations\, companies\, and resident groups\, together with the municipality\, signed the The Hague Climate Agreement as a contribution to this effort. \nThe shared ambition is to create a climate-neutral and socially resilient city. Achieving this is only possible if as many communities as possible commit to realising this ambition in a fair and just way. The key question is: how can we grow a strong “community of communities” in The Hague that is capable of accelerating the transformation toward a climate-just city in the coming years? \nThis question will be at the heart of the Sustainable Breakfast on Wednesday\, 10 December 2025\, coinciding with Human Rights Day. Together\, we will explore answers and opportunities. To inspire discussion\, Kees Klomp\, author of Ecoliberalism\, will introduce a transformative narrative that can help build a strong community of communities. Following this\, we will engage with various local change-makers about what is needed—and possible—to shape and implement such a transformative story. We will conclude by drawing key takeaways with speakers and participants\, identifying next steps toward climate justice. \n  \nProgram\n08:15–09:00 – Arrival\, vegan breakfast\, and welcome\n09:00–09:30 – Kees Klomp on the urgency and opportunities to build a strong community of communities on the path to a climate-just city\n09:30–09:45 – Joris Wijsmuller on initiating a Haags Lab with Duurzaam Den Haag and harder-to-reach groups to collaboratively work on climate justice\n09:45–10:00 – Marija Pop Trajkova (The Hague Humanity Hub) and Dr. Nadia Sánchez Castillo – Winckels (Climate Legal Consulting) on fostering a growing Hague community around climate justice through the Climate Deal\n10:00–10:15 – Gerrit Jan van ’t Veen and Elly Rijnierse on developing a vision for the Hague Donut\, inspired by Kate Raworth’s ideas for a just economy within ecological boundaries\n10:15–10:45 – Discussion with speakers and audience on next steps to strengthen a “community of communities” and realize a collective transformative narrative for a climate-just city\n10:45–11:30 – Informal networking and follow-up conversation\nRegistration\nRegistration is required due to catering arrangements. \n  \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Peace Finance Workshop 1 - From Principles to Practice
DESCRIPTION:About this session\nThis two-hour workshop takes forward the Humanity Hub’s Investing in Peace initiative by introducing the principles and practice of Peace Finance – exploring how finance\, innovation\, and collaboration can actively strengthen peace and resilience. \n  \nPeace Finance starts from a simple idea: every financial or organisational decision affects trust\, inclusion\, and stability. While some organisations work in fragile or conflict-affected settings\, others focus on inequality\, governance\, human rights\, or social innovation – all of which influence how societies sustain stability and inclusion. Peace-positive investments put this principle into practice: they seek not only financial or developmental returns but also measurable contributions to cooperation\, legitimacy\, and resilience in the communities they touch. \n  \nThrough short examples and guided discussion\, participants will explore how these ideas can translate into practical approaches for reducing risk\, strengthening legitimacy\, and unlocking new forms of partnership. \n\nLed by practitioners: Hear directly from professionals applying Peace Finance in practice – from fund design and social enterprise to governance and impact innovation.\nInteractive and applied: Work through real examples\, group discussions\, and short design challenges that turn abstract concepts into concrete tools.\nA first step in a series: This workshop marks the beginning of a broader learning journey on Peace Finance\, with future sessions offering opportunities for deeper exchange\, co-creation\, and practice.\n\n  \nWhy this workshop\nPeace Finance provides a way to connect financial and development choices with the conditions that make societies more stable\, inclusive\, and resilient. As the boundaries between finance\, innovation\, and peacebuilding continue to blur\, organisations in every sector face new opportunities – and responsibilities – to align their decisions with peace-positive outcomes. \nThis workshop offers an accessible starting point to that conversation\, inviting participants from across civil society\, policy\, innovation\, and finance to explore together how their work can contribute to long-term stability and shared prosperity. \n  \nWho is this workshop for?\n\nCivil-society organisations\, NGOs & INGOs – strengthening inclusion\, accountability\, and social impact through collaborative\, locally grounded approaches.\nInnovators & PeaceTech professionals – exploring how digital tools\, data\, and new business models can enhance transparency\, participation\, and trust.\nPeacebuilding & development practitioners – linking programmatic work to investment opportunities that build resilience and reduce fragility.\nPolicy & governance advisers – integrating peace considerations into national\, local\, or corporate decision-making frameworks.\nImpact & finance actors – from donors and DFIs to ESG investors\, looking for strategies that de-risk operations and connect capital flows with long-term stability.\n\n  \n	Register your attendance online This link opens in a new tab\n Register your attendance in-person This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:OPORA Foundation Conference: The Future of Return
DESCRIPTION:As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year\, questions of return\, reintegration\, and mobility are becoming increasingly urgent. Existing research discusses return\, but rarely considers return amid active war. Drawing on wellbeing surveys and extensive mixed-method fieldwork\, our study illuminates the realities of returnees in wartime Ukraine. \nThis event will draw on the latest findings from our research project but will go beyond them\, highlighting the state of the art in mobility governance amid active war and political instability. Through interactive panels and breakout sessions\, together with renowned European experts we will reflect on the following topics: \n🔸 Mobility governance in the context of EU accession.\n🔸 Qualification recognition and upskilling of displaced Ukrainians.\n🔸 Reintegration challenges and patterns of repeated mobility after return.\n🔸 Operationalisation of dual intent: between integration and voluntary return. \nJoin us for “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯: 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘜𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘜𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦”\, a hybrid conference bringing together policymakers\, researchers\, practitioners\, and community leaders from the Netherlands\, Ukraine\, and beyond. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab
