SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth Protests in Kenya with Wangechi Grace Kahuria
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informal conversation with Wangechi Grace Kahuria on defending the human rights of youth movements in Kenya.\nIn this edition of the Fireside Peace Chats (FPC) series\, we welcome Wangechi Grace Kahuria\, a Kenyan civil rights activist and the Executive Director of IMLU\, a Health\, Governance and Human Rights Organisation involved in forensic documentation\, litigation\, medical and psychosocial rehabilitation of survivors of torture\, and monitoring the government’s adherence to its human rights commitments. Wangechi is currently participating in the Shelter City initiative\, a global movement for the protection of human rights defenders initiated by Justice & Peace. \nIn 2024\, young people were at the forefront of a wave of massive demonstrations against rising tax bills in Kenya. Kenyan authorities reacted with a brutal clampdown and have since continued to intimidate\, harass\, abduct and torture peaceful protestors\, members of human rights organisations and other government critics. Drawing from her work at IMLU and her attendance at several UN sessions in Geneva\, Wangechi will reflect on her experience with supporting youth activists in Kenya\, the challenges she faces in her field\, and pathways to justice for victims of severe human rights abuses. \nCome ready to listen\, reflect\, and exchange insights on accountability\, justice\, and the protection of youth political participation in the face of democratic decline. \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats? \nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. SUMMARY:Just Peace Dialogue: Stemmen uit de stad
DESCRIPTION:Dit is een Nederlandstalig evenement/This event will be held in Dutch. \nDe wereld verandert snel\, en daarmee ook de manier waarop we samenleven. Verkiezingen komen eraan\, en dat zal ook zijn gevolgen hebben voor Den Haag. Democratische instituties\, internationaal recht\, het maatschappelijk middenveld en mensenrechten staan wereldwijd – en in toenemende mate ook in Nederland – onder druk. Vrijheden en rechten worden beproefd en tegelijkertijd neemt de polarisatie in onze samenleving toe.  Daardoor lijkt het soms makkelijker om in tegenstellingen te denken. Juist om die reden neemt de behoefte aan verbinding en samenwerking toe. Niet afwachten\, maar zelf het initiatief nemen. Dit brengt ons bij de onvermijdelijke vraag: Wat kunnen wij als burgers doen? \n  \nTijdens deze Just Peace Dialoog\, in samenwerking met Oxfam Novib\, gaan bewoners van Den Haag – van studenten en buurtorganisatoren tot activisten en beleidsmakers – met elkaar in gesprek over hoe we onze stem laten horen\, onze waarden uitdragen en samen verandering in gang zetten. Daarbij onderzoeken we thema’s als: \n  \nWelke druk ervaren we vandaag en hoe is dat in de afgelopen jaren veranderd? Kunnen we daar samen iets aan doen?  \nHoe werkt polarisatie\, wat kan ertegenover staan\, en hoe gaan we om met meningsverschillen zonder de dialoog te verliezen?  \nWat gebeurt er als we protesteren en wat werkt wel of niet bij het creëren van maatschappelijke bewustwording?  \nHoe organiseren we ons effectief op een kleinere\, lokale schaal?  \n  \nWe verkennen hoe lokale initiatieven in de politieke stad Den Haag en daarbuiten bijdragen aan een hechtere en veerkrachtige samenleving. Hoe we verbondenheid en vertrouwen kunnen versterken. En hoe iedereen\, vanuit zijn of haar eigen plek\, kan bijdragen aan een échte Stad van Vrede en Recht. \n  \nTijdens deze dialoog gaan we in gesprek met een panel van experts en betrokken burgers op het gebied van burgerparticipatie en sociale veerkracht. Manon Tiessink (Coalitie Schilderswijk)\, Yussuf Abdi (Hijaz Community) en Fakiha Ahmed (Oxfam Novib) komen hun inzichten en expertise met ons delen. Daarna wordt het gesprek opengesteld voor iedereen: van activisten en maatschappelijke organisaties tot journalisten\, beleidsmakers\, onderzoekers\, jongeren en betrokken burgers. De kracht ligt juist in een respectvolle en open uitwisseling van verschillende perspectieven\, die kan leiden tot meer wederzijds begrip en het ontstaan van nieuwe oplossingen. \n  \n	Hier registreren This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \nOver de sprekers\nManon Tiessink\n \nManon woont en werkt in de beruchte maar zeer geliefde Schilderswijk in Den Haag. Ze begon als vrijwilliger\, maar omarmde al snel radicale participatie: het beheren van gemeenschapsruimtes\, het herverdelen van middelen en het vormgeven van besluiten. Van het samen met bewoners beheren van buurthuizen en tuinen\, tot het opbouwen van een grassroots-coalitie in de Schilderswijk en het oprichten van een wijkcoöperatie — zij zet zich volledig in voor gemeenschapskracht en verandering van onderop. \n\nFakiha Ahmed\n \nFakiha Ahmed is expert burgerrechten bij Oxfam Novib. Met een achtergrond in Peace and Conflict Studies en met ruime ervaring bij internationale organisaties\, richt zij zich op mensenrechten en gelijkheid\, en brengt beleid en maatschappelijke dialoog samen om verandering te bevorderen. \n\nYussuf Abdi\n \nJurist en oprichter van Abdi Juristen en Lotus Legal BV. Actief in de Hijaz-gemeenschap in Den Haag\, waar hij recht en compassie verbindt. Gelooft dat echte vrede begint bij rechtvaardigheid in het dagelijks leven. \n  \n  \nJust Peace Open Dag 2025\nDen Haag staat wereldwijd bekend als de ‘Internationale Stad van Vrede & Recht’\, en bijna elk monumentaal gebouw in de stad speelt een rol in het bouwen aan een rechtvaardiger en vreedzamer wereld. \n  \nVan het Vredespaleis tot het Internationaal Strafhof\, van het Internationaal Strafhof van de VN tot het Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel\, de straten van Den Haag ademen geschiedenis!
