SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth & Peace with Jonathan van Varik
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn this next edition of FPC\, we will discuss the unique perspective and position that youth can and should play in advancing peace from the local to the global level. Our guest speaker for this FPC edition is Jonathan van Varik\, youth worker\, freelance peace-builder\, and the lead coordinator of the 2026 Youth Peace Summit! With Jonathan\, we will discuss how we can  connect youth\, institutions\, organizations\, and governments in dialogue\, innovation\, and inclusion to empower young people worldwide to become active creators of peace. Within that context\, we will explore the contribution of the Youth Peace Summit\, its 2025 Youth Peace Manifesto\, and the summit’s innovative infrastructure for connecting youth peace-builders year-round\, which will be launched at the upcoming 2026 summit! Join us for an informal conversation intended to bring peacebuilders\, enthusiasts\, and citizens together to connect\, share experiences\, and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform for Security and the Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Peace at Home
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis event will be held in Dutch. \nHow can we achieve peace in our own city? What scope is there for dialogue as an instrument for peace\, amid increasing tensions in Dutch society? Come to the upcoming edition of Fireside Peace Chats\, where we will talk to Jakob de Jonge\, chair of The Hague Peace Projects\, about ‘Peace at Home’. Against the backdrop of global geopolitical instability\, this evening offers an opportunity to reflect on how peace can be achieved at the local level\, the balance between security and solidarity\, and what vigilance means in an increasingly militarised world. \n  \nThis informal conversation is intended to bring together peacebuilders\, enthusiasts and citizens to connect\, share experiences and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. SUMMARY:State’s obligations on Climate Change. A Latin American Perspective
DESCRIPTION:States have an obligation to address climate change that derives from independent and cumulative legal sources\, including the 2015 Paris Agreement. More recently\, on 23 July 2025\, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) released its Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change. This case represents the highest example of climate litigation to date\, indicating that climate change treaties set binding obligations for states. But what happens on the ground? What are the possibilities of international law to hold States to account? What are the main impediments for States to follow up on climate change treaties? And what is the role of non-State actors? What are the steps forward? \nThe Panel will situate the discussion in the context of Latin America to address these questions\, bringing together broad expertise and experience on the topic. \nThis event is organized by the Department of Latin American Studies and the Institute for History at Leiden University\, in collaboration with the Bolivian Embassy. \nPanelists\n\nH.E. Roberto Calzadilla – Ambassador of the Plurinational State of Bolivia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands\nAdv. LL.M.\, Msc Edgardo Sobenes – International lawyer with extensive experience at the ICJ and climate change law.\nDr. Natalia Donner (Leiden University) – Member of Knowledges in Terra\nLLM Liam Siry (Maastricht University) – Researcher on International Climate Change Law\nModerator: Dr. Soledad Valdivia (Latin American Studies/Institute for History\, Leiden University)\n\nPanelists will first discuss the questions\, each providing a contribution to the discussion from their experience and expertise. After this\, the floor will be open to the public to ask questions to the panelist and participate of the discussion. \nRegistration\nThe event is open to the public but registration is necessary. \nFor questions\, please email dr. Soledad Valdivia at s.valdivia.rivera@hum.leidenuniv.nl. \nLocation: Wijnhaven (Turfmarkt 99\, 2511 DP Den Haag)\nZaal: 3.60 \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab
