SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Far-Right Networks: Diffusion and Democratic Impact
DESCRIPTION:A closer look at far-right networks\, focusing on the case study of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India.\nHow do far-right networks embed themselves in cultural\, educational\, and political institutions? How do they translate grassroots presence into electoral power and ideological influence? And what explains their resilience across very different political contexts? \nThis event will examine the organizational strategies that enable far-right movements to build legitimacy\, extend their reach across society\, and sustain long-term mobilization. \nTo explore these questions\, the event will showcase the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in India as a central case study. As one of the world’s largest and most enduring far-right organizations\, the RSS offers a particularly revealing lens onto the mechanics of far-right mobilization: \n\nIts century-long historical development\nIts layered ecosystem of affiliated organizations\nIts decisive influence on contemporary Indian politics.\n\nYet the RSS is not an outlier. Its strategies resonate with\, and in some cases prefigure\, patterns visible in far-right movements across Europe\, the Americas\, and beyond\, from the cultivation of civil society fronts to the fusion of nationalism\, majoritarian identity\, and disinformation. \nMeet the speaker! \nSruti Bala is an Associate Professor in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests revolve around the intersections of culture\, performance\, and politics. Dr.Bala published studies on a wide range of topics including nonviolent protest\, artistic activism\, feminist and postcolonial/decolonial theories. She is a member of the collective International Solidarity for Academic Freedom in India (InSAF India)\, which advocates for collective academic freedoms and building global solidarities with Indian and international peoples’ movements for radical social\, economic and ecological justice. \nTogether we will reflect on what these networks mean for democracy\, pluralism\, and civil society today\, and how their growing visibility is reshaping political landscapes worldwide. \n	Register now

SUMMARY:Future of Democracy: Resilience Against Ethno-Nationalism Digital Threats
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an urgent conversation on the future of democracy as ethno-nationalism and digital threats increasingly erode civic space\, fuel polarization\, and deepen existing inequalities. Around the world\, far-right narratives and rapidly evolving technologies are accelerating conflict dynamics and weakening democratic institutions. On this event we are raising critical questions about how civil society can protect rights\, uphold pluralism\, and rebuild public trust. \n  \nThis Human Rights Day panel brings together leading experts working at the intersection of democracy\, digital governance\, and peacebuilding. Together\, we will explore how civil society\, human rights defenders\, and regulators are responding to these mounting pressures\, and what collective strategies can strengthen resilience and safeguard democratic participation. \n  \nDrawing on experiences from India\, West Africa\, the Sahel\, and other fragile contexts\, the discussion will examine both the scale of democratic backsliding and digital harms\, as well as the emerging opportunities for accountability\, community organising\, and rights-based digital governance. \n  \nFollowing the panel\, participants are invited to join an open Q&A and an informal reception — a space to connect\, exchange perspectives\, and engage directly with the speakers. \n  \nSpeakers:\n\nProf. Dr. Rahul Mukherji — Chair in Modern Politics of South Asia\, Heidelberg University\nLena Slachmuijlder — Senior Advisor on Digital Peacebuilding\, Search for Common Ground\nModerator: Ulviya Hasanova — Senior Advocacy Officer\, DAHRD\nDate & Time: 10 December 2025 15:00 – 17:00\nLocation:  Silversquare Square de Meeûs 35 1000 Brussels\n\n  \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Faith\, Freedom\, and the Fracturing of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling fireside chat exploring the urgent and interlinked challenges facing democracies today\, from the shrinking space for civil society and threats to freedom of religion\, to deepening polarisation and democratic backsliding. \nAcross the world\, democracies are under strain. Civil society is increasingly under pressure\, spaces for dissent and dialogue are narrowing\, freedom of religion is being contested\, and polarisation is shaping political discourse. While these dynamics may play out differently in different contexts\, their echoes are global\, and deeply concerning. \nThis conversation begins from the lived realities of India\, where activists\, journalists\, and religious minorities face rising restrictions\, but it does not end there. We also reflect on the Netherlands\, our host country\, where debates around civil liberties\, migration\, and inclusion reveal similar tensions. While these concerns are deeply felt in India\, they resonate just as strongly in the Netherlands and across the globe. In this moderated conversation with Marieke Koekkoek (Volt)\, Fatimazhra Belhirch (D66) and Isa Kahraman (NSC)\, we will reflect on these concerning trends\, drawing connections between the local and the international. \nCome be part of an open and thought-provoking discussion which will invite reflection\, dialogue\, and collective insight. The panel will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nLet’s talk about the future of democracy and why it matters to all of us. \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab\n	\n  \n🎙️ Format: Panel conversation + Q&A+ networking drinks\n💬 Language: English
