SUMMARY:Understanding Climate Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening as we unpack the who\, where\, what\, and whys of climate-related violence. How is climate change contributing to violence? In a rapidly warming world\, what can be done to stifle the threat of worse hostilities down the line and limit the impact on communities? And\, amid cascading risks\, how is climate security overlapping with other pressing issues\, such as inequality and misinformation? \n\n\n\nJournalist Peter Schwartzstein This link opens in a new tab will share many of the key themes and examples from The Heat and the Fury\, his recently published book and the first in-depth exploration of climate-related violence for the casual reader. He has spent more than a decade documenting how climate stresses are bleeding into violence big and small\, including ISIS’s exploitation of collapsing agricultural conditions to bolster its ranks in Iraq––and the impact of rising seas levels on Bangladeshi piracy. \n\n\n\nThis event\, held in the immediate run up to the next global climate conference\, COP29\, aims to engage a broader audience in discussions about climate security risks\, particularly as they intersect with other critical issues. The audience is invited to ask their pressing questions to the speakers. Speakers will also strive to raise public awareness about what has traditionally been a topic confined to academic and security discussions. By highlighting these connections\, the event above all seeks to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the implications of climate change on global relations. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nPeter Schwartstein \n\n\n\nMore speakers will be announced shortly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve a spot!

SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Children's Rights\, Crimes Against Humanity and Access to Justice: Research\, Practice and Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next edition in the Fireside Peace Chats series\, titled “Children’s Rights\, Crimes Against Humanity and Access to Justice: Research\, Practice and Experience”. This edition takes place with a children’s rights defender and current Shelter City guest. This speaker has a decade of working with children in vulnerable situations and contributes to leading organisations in project implementation and coordination. During her stay with Shelter City\, our guest will be researching the accessibility of legal mechanisms for children and young victims of crimes against humanity\, focusing on child-friendly practices\, availability of trained practitioners\, and on-the-ground support. In this edition of FPC\, we will explore the practical intricacies of international accountability mechanisms for child victims\, highlighting a people-centred approach\, lived experiences\, and practical challenges. \n\n\n\nThis edition of FPC is a collaboration with Justice&Peace Netherland’s Shelter City initiative. Shelter City is a global movement of cities\, organizations and people who stand side by side with human rights defenders at risk. Shelter City programs offer them a safe and inspiring space where they re-energize\, receive tailormade support and engage with allies to reinforce their local actions for change. As such\, we will take measures to protect the security of our guest speaker. During this FPC\, we will have a no photo policy and we ask that event attendees do not share information about the guest. Additionally\, registration information for this event will be shared with Shelter City for security purposes. \n\n\n\nRegistration will close on October 30\, 23:59 (CET) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve a spot!
