SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x Hague Talks: How to Achieve Environmental Justice?
DESCRIPTION:Join Just Peace The Hague This link opens in a new tab and Hague talks This link opens in a new tab for a special joint event on environmental justice as part of Hague Justice Week This link opens in a new tab As a key part of a more equitable and just future\, climate justice is growing in importance across the world\, and nowhere more so than in countries that are affected by climate change and rising sea levels the most. \n\n\n\nSo\, in collaboration with Movies that Matter This link opens in a new tab\, we will be screening the film Anote’s Ark by Matthieu Ritz: which tells the story of the nation of Kiribati\, which is being drastically affected by climate change. The film shows the struggle of Kiribati’s president\, Ton\, against the backdrop of UN climate negotiations in Paris. This is dramatically strung through a telling of the personal story of Tiemeri\, a mother of six who is trying everything she can to ensure that she and her family can move to safety in New Zealand. \n\n\n\nThe film screening will be followed by a special Hague Talks and discussion where we will delve into the topic of ecocide\, environmental justice\, and how Mozambique and its Chief Justice is working to secure a more just future for its people. \n\n\n\nThe event aligns with the overall theme of The Hague Justice Week 2023 \, which is to promote and discuss justice and human rights on different scales. By focusing on environmental justice\, the event highlights the critical role that the law plays in protecting the environment and ensuring that justice is served for both people and the planet. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here

SUMMARY:ARTWORKS: Storytelling that Informs Policy
DESCRIPTION:Displacement is the product of numerous systems. While often documented at critical junctures; such as familial separation\, ports of entry\, or moments of distress\, the reality for many displaced people is a web of convoluted and prolonged governmental\, geopolitical\, and legal structures. As issues of displacement are increasingly viewed through the lens of cycle-based media\, these experiences often go unseen and neglected\, forcing migrants and asylum seekers to develop their own methods of support\, visibility\, and influence over policy. \n\n\n\nART WORKS Projects\, in partnership with the U.S.-based think tank\, the Wilson Center’s Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative (RAFDI)\, presents Storytelling that Informs Policy: Addressing Refugees and Forced Displacement. This symposium will feature an artist talk by the photographers\, a panel discussion\, guest speakers from partner organization\, and an installation of images. All which explore how visual media and tools can open up dialogue and inform new perspectives on understanding the root causes of forced displacement and where in the ecosystem each of our organizations can play a role in identifying new and creative solutions to addressing a quickly growing global displacement challenge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:00 – 6:00pm\, Symposium \n\n\n\n6:00 – 7:00pm\, Closing Reception \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \n\n\n\n\nBassam Khabieh is an internationally recognized Syrian photojournalist who reported stories of the Syria conflict while working for Reuters. He was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal and was a fellow at the Oak Institute for Human Rights at Colby College. Khabieh has worked with ART WORKS Projects on a number of exhibitions and projects including: “The Children of Syria\,” “After Syria – A New Generation’s Pathway to Finding Home\,” and his recent project includes the publishing of a book of his work\, “Witnesses to War: The Children of Syria.”\n\n\n\nLiselot van Zantvoort works at Justice & Peace Netherlands\, a human rights organization in the Hague. Liselot coordinates a national network called Samen Hier\, in which Dutch citizens collaborate with their local government to create a safe pathway to their communities for refugees residing in camps outside of Europe. During her studies\, Liselot did research on the ineffectiveness of Dutch migration policy – its inhumane management made her driven to work on its improvement.\n\n\n\nPer Heggenes is the CEO of IKEA Foundation\, the philanthropic arm of Stichting INGKA Foundation\, the owner of the Swedish home furnishings company IKEA. As CEO\, Heggenes sets and drives the Foundation’s funding and innovation strategies and is a tireless advocate for children living in some of the world’s poorest communities. In 2019\, Heggenes was appointed by the UN Secretary General to join the High Level Panel on Internal Displacement with the goal of developing durable solutions to protracted internal displacement. Previously\, Heggenes held global and regional leadership roles for the shipping and logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics and global public relations firm Burson-Marsteller.\n\n\n\nJohn Thon Majok (event moderator) is the Director of Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative (RAFDI) at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where he is also the Deputy Director of Development and Senior Director of Grants Management. Before the Wilson Center\, Majok was a contractor at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State; Program Officer at the Council of American Overseas Research Centers; and Program Coordinator at the Academy for Educational DevelopmentA former refugee from South Sudan\, Majok’s perspectives on forced displacement are informed by lived experience and scholarship. SUMMARY:Strengthening conflict resolution capabilities in the Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:This is a separate side session organised by The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law that will dive into the recent lessons from the road to submitting a proposal at the National Growth Fund*. This session will take place from 14:00 – 15:00\, before the peace&justice café event starting at 15:00. \n\n\n\nThe proposal\, coordinated and submitted by HiiL\, but representing the collective plans of a consortium of 34 partners\, entails a first real attempt at broad PCJ-development on a national scale in the Netherlands. The plan spans 7 conflict areas and includes development on financial models\, regulation and (international) dissemination and movement. \n\n\n\nDuring the session\, we facilitate interaction on lessons learned regarding questions such as:- What have we learned from making the economic and the social case for people-centred justice? – Coalition building: what have we learned from working with a large consortium of partners?- How does the approach put forth in the plan for the Netherlands resonate in other countries and what opportunities or challenges might be at play in the context of other countries? \n\n\n\n* With the Dutch Growth Fund the Dutch government allocates funding (a total of 20 billion between 2021-2025) to projects with the highest potential of contributing to our national earning capacity\, or in other words\, to durable economic growth in either the field of knowledge development or R&D and innovation. \n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nThis side session is a part of the next peace&justice café with focus on ‘People-Centred Justice’ in collaboration with The Hague Institute for the Innovation of Law and as part of Hague Justice Week! \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that you will need to register separately for the side-session organised by HiiL and for the peace&justice café event. \n\n\n\nFollow this link to register for the peace&justice café on people centered justice.

SUMMARY:peace&justice café in collaboration with HiiL: People Centred Justice
DESCRIPTION:The next peace&justice café will focus on ‘People Centred Justice’ in collaboration with The Hague Institute for the Innovation of Law and as part of Hague Justice Week! People Centred Justice is a simple idea with huge potential impact: that legal practices and systems should be based on evidence\, ‘what works’ from the potential of the citizen\, and should be able to deliver satisfactory outcomes for the people they serve. Or\, in short: sensible\, outcome-oriented\, and accessible. The peace&justice café on People Centred Justice will take a cross-sectoral look at achieving these aims\, working together with The Hague Humanity Hub community to explore the challenges\, pitfalls and success factors of justice innovation at scale. \n\n\n\nAnd there will also be side sessions at the café on an exciting new initiative that a consortium of 37 organisations across the Netherlands are working on to make conflict resolution accessible\, effective\, and people-centred through structural R&D! \n\n\n\nCheck out the web-page for full speaker information\, and sign up at the link below! \n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up here
