SUMMARY:Netherlands Helsinki Committee: In conversation with leading Ukrainian Humanitarian Organisation Vostok SOS
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce that on Monday 22 May\, from 13:30 to 15:30\, we will be hosting a special event at the Nutshuis in The Hague (Riviervismarkt 5\, meeting room Telkamer). \n\n\n\nVostok SOS has been a leading human rights organisation and provider of humanitarian relief in Luhansk and Donetsk since 2014. They currently also play an important role in providing aid to the most affected communities since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. \n\n\n\nJoin the event for an insightful and inspiring interview with their director Yulia Krasilnykova\, humanitarian program manager Oksana Kuiantseva\, and emergency hotline coordinator Evheniia Tkachuk. \n\n\n\nThis is a unique opportunity to learn about the incredible work that this organization is doing to support vulnerable communities in Ukraine. From providing emergency relief to those affected by conflict to advocating for the rights of women and children\, their work is truly making a difference. The event will include a Q&A session where you will have the chance to ask questions and learn more about the organization and their mission. It is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the humanitarian and human rights situation in Ukraine\, especially in the recently de-occupied areas\, and learn more about the challenges and opportunities in organizing humanitarian help\, evacuations\, and support for displaced people in a time of war. \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here!

SUMMARY:ISS Humanitarian Governance Seminar: Political and Humanitarian Crisis in Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:In this Humanitarian Governance hybrid seminar\, Dr Gerard McCarthy presents his book examining how ideals and practices of non-state welfare can sustain democratic resistance and undermine social reform. \n\n\n\nThis panel discussion marks the publication of Gerard McCarthy’s Outsourcing the Polity: Non-State Welfare\, Inequality and Resistance in Myanmar.  \n\n\n\nInformed by research during Myanmar’s decade of partial civilian rule (2011–2021)\, the book examines how ideals and practices of non-state welfare can both sustain democratic resistance and undermine social reform over time. With non-state social actors more important than ever following Myanmar’s return to dictatorship in 2021\, Outsourcing the Polity casts new light on the lasting legacies of outsourcing for distributive politics and poses questions about humanitarian engagement in Myanmar in the years to come.During this hybrid event\, McCarthy will offer a short overview of the book and then scholarly and practitioner discussants will offer comments and perspective. The talk will conclude with a Q&A. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nGerard McCarthy – Assistant Professor of Social Policy and Development at ISSMaaike MatelskiOpens external – Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije University AmsterdamAndrew Fischer – Professor of Inequality\, Social Protection and Development at ISSKhin OhmarOpens external – Founder and chairwoman of the Advisory Board of Progressive Voice \n\n\n\n\nPlease Register

SUMMARY:LeidenAsiaCentre: Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides Under China's Global Rise
DESCRIPTION:On 25 May 2023\, the LeidenAsiaCentre has invited Monica Liu\, author of the book Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides under China’s Global Rise\, published by Stanford University Press to give a lecture. This lecture will take place in The Hague Humanity Hub from 16:00 – 18:00\, followed by a reception. \n\n\n\nThe talk will summarise the research Monica Liu conducted from 2008 to 2019 in China where she explored the life histories and decision-making processes of Chinese women seeking to marry Western men whom they met through online dating agencies. The majority of these women were middle-aged (above 40)\, divorced\, and from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Monica’s investigation asked a number of questions: How did the inequalities that emerged during China’s transition from state socialism toward a global market economy shape these women’s desires to pursue out-migration via marriage? How did the women’s social and economic status in China affect their expectations about their new lives abroad? Join the discussion and sign up now! \n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here
