SUMMARY:(Online) Rule of law challenges in the Western Balkans and the way forward
DESCRIPTION:The European Union (EU) is based on the rule of law\, and all new countries joining the EU must respect the rule of law and be committed to its promotion. So\, what are the rule of law challenges faced and the gains booked so far by the countries that have officially been given the ‘candidate’ status\, such as Albania\, Montenegro\, North Macedonia and Serbia? In the online event ‘Rule of law challenges in the Western Balkans and the way forward’ on March 29\, speakers will focus on recent reforms and rule of law challenges in these countries. How can these challenges be tackled and what is the way forward? And: How are these developments perceived by the Netherlands\, as one of the founding members of the EU? \n\n\n\nBackgroundIt’s been more than twenty years since the launch of the Stabilisation and Association Process\, the European Union’s policy towards the Western Balkans\, aiming at the eventual integration of the region into the EU. Similarly\, it’s been almost two decades since the Thessaloniki European Council (2003) officially proclaimed the membership perspective for the countries in the region. \n\n\n\nIn these past two decades\, Croatia was the only country that has managed to join the EU. While accession negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro have been going on for around a decade\, accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia have not been opened yet\, despite a decision by the Council to do so. \n\n\n\nPanel of speakersWhat are the gains booked so far and what are the challenges facing each country? How are these developments perceived by the Netherlands\, as one of the founding members of the EU? How can these challenges be tackled and what is the way forward? These are the main questions that our panel of speakers will discuss\, focusing on the rule of law issues in Albania\, Montenegro\, North Macedonia and Serbia. The last speaker will focus on how these developments are perceived by the Dutch and European politicians. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A. \n\n\n\nThe speakers for this panel are: \n\n\n\nDr Fjoralba Caka (Tirana University\, Tirana)Dr Denis Preshova (Ss. Cyril and Methodius University\, and External Associate for the Institute for Democracy\, Skopje)Mirko Đuković (PhD candidate at CEU\, Vienna\, and Visiting Research Fellow at Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law\, Heidelberg)Milan Antonijević (Lawyer\, Senior expert for Chapters 23 and 24)Thijs Reuten (Member of the European Parliament\, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats)\n\n\n\nThe event will be moderated by Dr Narin Idriz (T.M.C Asser Institute). \n\n\n\nThis event is organised in the context of the Global Europe project at the TMC Asser Institute. The organisation of this event is supported by the Embassies of Albania\, North Macedonia and Serbia in the Hague\, and the Montenegrin Representation to the EU in Brussels.

SUMMARY:Why China is Watching the War in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2022\, the Communist Party of China (CCP) will hold its 20th Party Congress in Beijing. This provides ample reason for President Xi Jinping to extend his “zero-COVID policy” and keep China closed to foreigners for another year. “Self-reliance” and “growth driven by domestic consumption” are increasingly becoming the mantras of China’s new economic policy. In the face of major domestic challenges – a slowing economy\, an unbalanced property market\, water shortages\, shrinking farmland and an ageing population – Xi Jinping will not tolerate any instability that may jeopardize his ambition to stay in power for at least another five years.  Meanwhile\, the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are likely to be felt in Western Europe and East Asia for years to come. Will Russia and the rest of Europe maintain their energy trade? A complete break-up would cause a deep recession on both sides\, resulting in social and political unrest. Recent events are driving Russia into the arms of China. The most severe impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may ultimately be felt on the other side of the Asian continent\, as Beijing may feel propelled to implement its plans of ‘reunification’ with Taiwan sooner rather than later.   During this event\, the floor will be given to Ryan J. Roberts (Counselor for Public Affairs at U.S. Embassy The Hague)\, Hendrik (Henk) Schulte Nordholt (sinologist and publicist)\, Ruben Brekelmans (Member of Parliament in NL for VVD)\, and Xiaoxue Martin (Research Fellow at The Clingendael Institute). The event will be chaired by hosts Alex Krijger (Krijger & Partners) and Eline Hoeken (Netherlands-Asia Honours Summer School). In addition\, students whose studies and interests are closely linked to China are invited to join the discussion.  By bringing students\, politicians\, experts\, and business people together we hope to bring the discussion on these important subjects to a new level!  The event will take place on Thursday\, 31 March from 16:00 to 17:30\, followed by networking drinks at The Hague Humanity Hub. This event is organized by Krijger & Partners\, in cooperation with PB NAHSS\, ismus\, studievereniging voor studenten politicologie Nijmegen and Argus\, with support from U.S. Embassy The Hague.
