It is also an ode to the vanishing art of the long-form feature or reportage\, which is disappearing because many media organisations can no longer afford it\, or are unwilling to pay for this kind of time-consuming\, on-the-ground journalism. \n This book showcases a keen eye for the human story and a profound commitment to the human family. By telling the stories\, it helps put a human face on the suffering that is too often viewed statistically and quantitatively. \nBoštjan Videmšek is an award-winning Slovenian journalist\, war correspondent\, and playwright. He is the author of several books about wars\, conflicts\, migration\, refugees\, the Arab Spring\, and the Greek financial crisis\, including 21st Century Conflicts: Remnants of War(s). His articles and stories have been published in The New York Times\, Politico\, Le Figaro\, Der Spiegel\, Aftenposten\, El Periodico\, Sydney Morning Herald\, Middle East Eye\, and Atlantic Post\, among others. He has reported from all major conflicts in last 20 years\, including those in Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Syria\, Darfur\, South Sudan\, Pakistan\, Gaza\, Libya\, Somalia\, and Kosovo. SUMMARY:Future Session: Urban Resilience\, with Cordaid and AMS Institute
DESCRIPTION:This session will be the third (and last) in line on the topic of urban development and will be a practical follow up on the inspirational session Future in Cities This link opens in a new tab at the Partos Innovation Festival. \nThe session will be facilitated by prof. dr. Arjan van Timmeren of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Solutions Institute. Over the years his work has focused on the integration of the concept of sustainable development in the field of architecture\, urbanism and building technology in both practice and academia\, with late emphasis on Smart cities\, citizens\, Urban Metabolism (Green-Blue systems) and Circular Economy. \nAs an expert on Urban Resilience at Cordaid\, Peter Gijs van Enk will give a presentation during this session. He supports Cordaid’s projects to strengthen urban resilience\, especially for the urban poor. He is committed to shaping solutions for the consequences of climate change\, natural and man-made hazards that inhabitants of cities and surrounding regions are increasingly facing. Peter Gijs will be zooming in on Cordaid’s urban resilience approach and examples which illustrate how Cordaid works with urban communities in Asia and Africa in becoming more resilient to disaster risks and challenges faced in these projects. \n[av_button label=’Information and Registration’ link=’manually\,https://thespindle.org/event/future-session-8-urban-resilience/’ link_target=” size=’small’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

SUMMARY:Humanitarian Reality in Colombia: Solidarity for Human Rights Defenders
DESCRIPTION:A profile of The Community Leaders: Who are they? And what is their story? \nGenaro Graciano\, Defender of Human Rights and Nature\, specialised in agriculture and coffee culture. Coming from the municipality of Ituango (Antioquia). In 2009\, at the beginning of the construction of the extractive megaproject “Hidroituango”\, Genaro started witnessing the negative impact on the environment\, farms\, crops and social structure that this project was having. The seriousness of the problems\,  motivated him to devote himself to work in defence of human rights. He has joined the Movimientos de Rios Vivos Colombia and opposes the use of the river as merchandise for the construction of hydroelectric complexes. \nMilena Florez\, Defender of Human Rights and Nature\, mother of two children\, she has made use of her skills as a trader and entrepreneur to reproduce and defend life. As a lover of stories and guardian of memory\, she takes advantage of every opportunity to go out and tell the events of her region and to learn how the story of her land interconnects with the narrative from other regions. Since 2010\, she has been a member of Association of victims and those affected by megaprojects and of Movimientos de Rios Vivos Colombia. \nSince their arrival to Spain\, Milena and Genaro have met with the bank of ParisBas in Paris\, the Bundesbank in Frankfurt and the European Union in Brussels\, with whom they have exposed the Human Rights violations on how European banks investments generate suffering and insecurity to the local population. \nCarlos Paez: At the age of 22\, following multiple threats by the paramilitaries\, he and his family were expelled from their lands at gunpoint. Since then\, in the process of his struggle to regain his family’s farm\, he became a social leader fighting for the restitution of land. Founded the Urabá Land Claimants Association to help peasants to exercise their right to reclaim their land. In December 2018\, after 10 years of various judicial instances\, the Supreme Court\, under the transitional justice framework of the Victims and Witnesses Act\, ruled in their favour; a historical case for Colombia. Carlos is now a member of Tierra y Paz. \nNubia Russi: Leader and human rights defender\, member of the Human Rights Defender Committee of the municipality of Rocensvalles (Tolima). For more than 17 years\, she has worked devotedly with civil society and institutions for victims’ rights and peacebuilding\, especially for the victims of forced disappearance. Nubia is a member of CORFUPAZ. \nMilena\, Genaro\, Carlos and Nubia\, following the life threats that they have received in Colombia\, are under the Humanitarian Temporary Refuge program in Spain. \n  \nCitizen Diplomacy 5-A took this opportunity to invite them to come to The Hague to explain\, before the international community\, the reality in Colombia and how the transition to real peace in Colombia remains an “extremely complicated” process. \nGénaro\, Milena\, Carlos and Nubia have toured four European countries (Spain\, France\, Germany and Belgium) where they explained the difficult situation faced daily by human rights defenders in Colombia in the region of Antioquia\, Urabá and Tolima. And with the same purpose they come to make known: how the transition towards peace in Colombia continues to be an extremely complicated and dangerous process. \n  \nFollowing these talks\, two members of our work team\, Milton Puertas\, Political analyst and social researcher and Carolina Fiallo\, Architect and urban planner will present an overview of the situation to which Human Rights Defenders in Colombia are subject. \nWe are seeking to build support for the Community Leaders in Colombia. \n\nIs your organisation\, your NGO working for Human Rights? Land defenders? Social development? International justice? Protection of Rivers? Academic? Geologist?\n\nCan you help? Then please join us! \n\nNone of the above and yet you care to know about this situation\, come along!\n\nBe among our audience; we are eager to connect and build strong support for these community leaders\, who will return to Colombia in November to continue their Human Right work. Let them take home some plans on future collaboration\, some ideas that can help them pursue the defence of their rights and the rights of their community. \n[av_button label=’Register now!’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/75999200655′ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Cultural Strategy in Communication Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how your campaigns could become more effective? \nOften a great deal of effort is put in the what of a message\, but rarely the same attention is given to how the message fits in the larger cultural framework of the target audience. \nThis ‘lunch and learn’ you’ll learn how a soap superhero taught Nepalese children to wash their hands in the wake of the 2015 earthquakes. You’ll also learn what everyday things – from wearing Nikes to doing a daily prayer – tells us about the cultural framework we adhere to. \nThis training will show you how your organization can start harnessing the culture of your target audiences to strengthen your communication campaigns. You’ll learn how communication campaigns can align their messages and presentation with the cultural expressions and values of the target audience. Campaigns that do so will generate bigger impact and are more likely to change hearts and minds. \nThe training will be provided by by Humanity Hub member Yme Gorter\, strategy expert and co-founder at Waai. Waai has partnered with humanitarian organizations worldwide in creating impactful communication campaigns. \nIntended audience:\nGeneral management\, senior level innovation and communication professionals of organizations striving for a peaceful and just world. \n\nLunch: \nYou will have the opportunity to purchase your lunch at the Hub Cafe member buffet. SUMMARY:The Hague Conversations on Conflict – Human Rights and Conflict
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the third in a new series of events by LINKS Europe and The Hague Humanity Hub\, which aims to rethink approaches to conflict prevention and resolution. \nOrganised in collaboration with the journal Security and Human Rights Monitor\, the event on 31 October will focus on Human Rights and Conflict\, highlighting how human rights violations can be the cause of an outbreak of conflict\, and the importance of respect for human rights in ensuring long-term sustainability in any resolution of violent conflict. Amongst other things\, the event will look to assess three main subtopics: \n– To what extent are human rights a domestic issue\, and to what extent are they a concern of the international community; when is humanitarian intervention justified? Who can/should authorise humanitarian intervention? \n– How can human rights be embedded in conflict prevention and conflict resolution processes in order to secure the sustainability of peace? \n– How do you monitor and address human rights issues in areas controlled by non-state actors and unrecognised states; Is the European response to the human rights situation in its geographical neighbourhood adequate? \nOur panel of experts will each open with their thoughts and experiences in relation to the topic\, before an open discussion\, in which we welcome and encourage the participation of the audience. The event will end with networking drinks for all those in attendance. \nAmong the panelists will be Piet de Klerk\, the current Chairman of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee and former Netherlands Ambassador-at-large on Human Rights Issues; and Dr Nienke van der Have\, Senior Legal Specialist advising on human rights and author of ‘The Prevention of Gross Human Rights Violations Under International Human Rights Law’. The names of the other panelists will be announced shortly. \nSign in on the day will open at 17:45 with the event starting at 18:00 sharp. Registration is mandatory! \nThe Hague Conversations on Conflict is a series of discussions\, lectures\, workshops and networking events launched by LINKS Europe in association with The Hague Humanity Hub\, in June 2019. Their aim is to provide a forum where the changing nature of war and conflict can be analysed and assessed\, together with the responses of international society. \n[av_button label=’Register Now!’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/76752485751′ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]
