SUMMARY:Dispatches from the Frontlines of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:The book presentation and kickoff already took place\, but the photography exhibition of the photojournalist Jure Eržen can be seen at the Humanity Hub until 17 October. If you would like to visit the exhibition\, please let us know at info@humanityhub.net. \n  \n\nThe Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia kindly invites you to a book presentation by the award-winning journalist and war correspondent \nBoštjan Videmšek – “Dispatches from the Frontlines of Humanity”\, A Book of Reportage \nThe conversation will be moderated by Mr Peter Heintze\, coordinator of KUNO – Platform for Humanitarian Knowledge Exchange in the Netherlands. \nBoštjan Videmšek has reported from all major conflicts in last 20 years. \nHis book Dispatches from the Frontline of Humanity is an in-depth reportage on the global refugee crisis and the causes behind it.The book was recently published in English by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. \nThe event will be accompanied by the opening of a photography exhibition of the photojournalist Jure Eržen (the exhibition will run until 17 October). \n  \nPlease register here before 18 September 2019: \n  \n[av_button label=’Registration’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dispatches-from-the-frontlines-of-humanity-book-presentation-exhibition-registration-71622674347′ link_target=’_blank’ size=’small’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n  \nDispatches from the Frontlines of Humanity is an in-depth reportage on some of the most defining issues of our time\, namely the global refugee crisis\, the conflicts displacing these masses of humanity\, and the causes behind them. It is also an ode to the vanishing art of the long-form feature or reportage\, which is disappearing because many media organisations can no longer afford it\, or are unwilling to pay for this kind of time-consuming\, on-the-ground journalism. \n This book showcases a keen eye for the human story and a profound commitment to the human family. By telling the stories\, it helps put a human face on the suffering that is too often viewed statistically and quantitatively. \nBoštjan Videmšek is an award-winning Slovenian journalist\, war correspondent\, and playwright. He is the author of several books about wars\, conflicts\, migration\, refugees\, the Arab Spring\, and the Greek financial crisis\, including 21st Century Conflicts: Remnants of War(s). His articles and stories have been published in The New York Times\, Politico\, Le Figaro\, Der Spiegel\, Aftenposten\, El Periodico\, Sydney Morning Herald\, Middle East Eye\, and Atlantic Post\, among others. He has reported from all major conflicts in last 20 years\, including those in Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Syria\, Darfur\, South Sudan\, Pakistan\, Gaza\, Libya\, Somalia\, and Kosovo. SUMMARY:Creative Session with Enterprise for Peace Scholars
DESCRIPTION:About One Young World and the Enterprise for Peace Scholarship\nFrom 22-25 October 2019\, the One Young World Summit 2019 will take place in London. Around 2000 young leaders from 196 different countries will take part in this conference that will connect change-makers to discuss and develop initiatives addressing the Sustainable Development Goals and create further social impact.\n  \nBuilding on the positive experience of Dutch participation in this Summit and a contribution to the conference by way of an extensive scholarship programme\, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is once more supporting a group of 50 young people (selected by the MFA and the Orange Corners team of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency) to take part in the Summit in London.\n  \nThe selected ‘Enterprise for Peace Scholars’ are all contributing to sustainable economic development in different ways\, through job creation and initiatives for poverty alleviation. The selected change-makers all come from the MENA region\, the Sahel and the Horn of Africa.\n  \nThe MFA and the Orange Corners team are organising a pre-Summit programme on Sunday 20 and Monday 21 October\, with the themes of entrepreneurship\, leadership and youth employment. The objective of this additional two-day programme is to increase the capacity and knowledge of these young people about these themes and thereby increase their impact in their home countries. In addition\, we would like to create a stronger connection between Dutch policy makers\, executioners and civil society and the young people coming from Africa and the Middle East.\n  \nYOU ARE INVITED:\nThis is why\, on Monday 21 October 2019\, we are visiting the Hague Humanity Hub for an interactive session with some of the Hub’s members. We would like to create an opportunity for some of the Hub’s members and the Enterprise for Peace Scholars to pitch their initiatives and enter into discussion about the themes that affect them and their initiatives\, which will undoubtedly lead to new insights\, cross-pollination of ideas and potential new collaborations. In addition\, it is a great opportunity to showcase one’s work to several employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency who will be present for this session.\n  \nWhat:\nThe Hague Humanity Hub Session with Enterprise for Peace Scholars (HUB MEMBERS ONLY)\nWhen:\nMonday\, 21 October\, 11:15-12:30\nWhere:\nThe Hague Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, 2511 CJ\, Den Haag\n  \nProgramme\n11.00-11.15: Arrival Enterprise for Peace Scholars at Hague Humanity Hub\n11.15-11.30: Introduction by Hague Humanity Hub Team\n11.30-11.55: 5 Pitches (3 Hague Humanity Hub members\, 2 Enterprise for Peace Scholars)\n11.55-12.30: World Cafe with all participants\n12.30: Enterprise for Peace Scholars leave the Hague Humanity Hub\n  \nTo register\, please e-mail alex.taillandier@humanityhub.net (HUB MEMBERS ONLY). SUMMARY:Seminar: Cultivating Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The science of mind and its relevance for policy making in education\, health care\, humanitarian aid and the environment.\nWe are at a pivotal moment in our collective history in which the human mind and the sense of self that emerges from it\, are changing the face of our living world.  The events in the outer world can move us rapidly between denial and despair\, from anxiety to depression\, and our often-isolated efforts to make a change in the world can lead us to a feeling of frustration\, fear\, futility and burn-out. \nAt the same time\, insights from the new “science of the mind” into our mental and emotional life can give us great hope. We now know methods to empower our consciousness\, emotions\, beliefs\, identity\, relationships\, health and behavior away from stress and anxiety into resilience\, compassion\, well-being and meaningful action. Moreover\, with these insights we can also envision more effective human-centered policies in fields such as education\, health\, the environment\, peace and justice. The insights into how we are wired “internally”\, can also inform us how to achieve social change “externally”. \nInspired by these fundamental ideas\, this gathering of experts\, educators\, humanitarians\, social entrepreneurs\, philanthropists and policy makers aims to: \n\nInspire conversations about how to harness the human capacity to direct cultural evolution for wise action toward a more compassionate and resilient human culture.\nOffer a combination of deep experiential immersions with conceptual discussions and practical skill building based insights from science.\nNurture personal\, professional\, and public resilience\, cultivate well-being\, and inspire ingenuity through strengthening the mind and integrating the experience of “self” as we develop effective and timely means for action in the world.\n\nThis day-long seminar will provide immersive experiential exercises and conceptual discussions with a focus on how we can change systems underlying our relationships with people and the planet.  The presenters have been working for decades on how to understand and transform systems related to our interpersonal\, societal\, and environmental health.  One of those collective efforts has been the study and cultivation of “generative social fields” in which families\, schools\, businesses\, governments\, and the larger society in which we live can create relational interactions that support the nurturance of compassion\, connection\, curiosity and well-being.  Within such generative fields\, a sense of belonging\, meaning and effective action emerges. \nCome join us for a day of deep experiential learning intended for anyone interested in how to cultivate the individual development and pervasive leadership capacities to facilitate systems change in local and global ways that will help promote a healthier world. Limited places available! \n[av_button label=’Information and Registration’ link=’manually\,https://www.garrisoninstitute-int.org/seminar-cultivating-resilience/’ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

SUMMARY:Hague Talks: How can humanitarian aid workers build resilience in high-stress environments?
DESCRIPTION:As a global society\, we rely upon 570\,000 humanitarian aid workers to bring security\, comfort and basic services to more than 131 million people in need\, including over 68 million refugees displaced by conflict and insecurity. Relief workers operating on the front lines of humanitarian response are routinely exposed to stress and chaos\, and as a result\, the sector continues to shoulder a largely overlooked mental health crisis. \nWorking in countries affected by war and natural disasters is inherently stressful\, yet aid workers also face a layer of psychological vulnerability which is exacerbated by the lack of adequate training\, support and management for such issues. The failure to adequately prepare and support staff has enormous negative consequences at three levels: \n\nIndividual humanitarian aid workers suffer increased trauma and stress levels\, perform under their potential\, get burned out and leave the field earlier.\nHumanitarian organisations operate less efficiently\, with higher costs for insurance and medical care\, and high staff turnover causing loss of institutional knowledge and inflated recruitment costs.\nPopulations in need receive a lower quality of care from agencies with high staff turnover and aid workers who are over-stressed\, less experienced and under-trained.\n\nThrough this event\, we explore more around the need for support amongst humanitarian aid workers in relation to stress management. We ask: what are the main stressors experienced by aid workers\, and how does stress impact them? What are the potential routes to resilience\, both at the individual and organisational level? What duty of care do organisations have in relation to the wellbeing of their staff? \nSPEAKERS \n\nDaniel Siegel – as one of the world’s leading neuropsychiatrists\, Dr Siegel focuses on exploring how human consciousness can evolve to meet the unprecedented challenges we face in today’s world. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA.\nHelen Barley – has worked in the international humanitarian sector for over 10 years\, with a focus on managing protection\, education and psychosocial support interventions for crisis affected populations. Helen is the Programme Director of the Contemplative Based Resilience (CBR) Project of the Garrison Institute International\, which aims to develop a more resilient and compassionate humanitarian aid sector.\nLya Jawad – is from Lebanon and for the last six years has worked with local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Lebanon\, Syria\, Afghanistan\, Iraq and Turkey. Her work in the humanitarian field focused on gender based violence\, psychosocial support\, child protection and empowering the LGBTQIA community to strengthen their resilience.\n\nModerator for the event is Sander Tideman. He is an executive coach\, teacher and author\, with a focus on leadership transitions and strategic change. He is also Executive Director of Garrison Institute International\, which implements the Contemplative Based Resilience (CBR) programme for humanitarian aid workers. \n[av_button label=’REGISTRATION’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hague-talks-building-humanitarians-resilience-in-high-stress-environments-registration-75997896755′ link_target=’_blank’ size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

SUMMARY:Hub Lunch: A Conversation on Food - Wholesome Approaches to Habits and Practices
DESCRIPTION:Food has historically been about more than just nutrition. It has been a way to bring communities together\, to settle disputes and for cultures to preserve their heritage. Today food can be a confusing topic\, whether its veganism\, diets or nutrition. Food can be a powerful connector\, so let’s not waste it and let’s try to get to know it a little better! \nWe’ll be joined by Anubhav Kandpal of Conscious Kitchen: a big time foodie and director of Conscious Kitchen\, an initiative that raises awareness about food waste and sustainability through holding weekly social dinners. He also works as a sustainability consultant with other non-profits on topics of food\, sustainability and community building. \nThis Hub lunch is for Hub members only!

SUMMARY:Fundraising Training with Fonds 1818
DESCRIPTION:Do you have plans for a good project but not the financial means to make it happen? In The Netherlands there are many foundations that can help with money\, knowledge and a network. You may have heard of the big ones but there are hundreds of smaller foundations all with their specific focus areas. \nDuring this introduction into fundraising for NGO’s in The Netherlands you learn about the different types of foundations\, where to find them\, how they can help you and how to apply for a grant. Whether you apply for a grant at an endowed foundation or charity\, a subsidy at a municipality or a sponsorship by a company – it all starts with a good plan and getting your story straight. This event series on access to funding is organized in collaboration with The Hague Business Agency. \nCorien Bosch is head of communications and supports grantees at Fonds 1818\, an endowed foundation that supports social projects in the The Hague area. \nPlease note: this training session is focused on fundraising for NGOs in the Netherlands\, including on proposal writing for grants from local organisations or government institutions. \n[av_button label=’Register Now!’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fundraising-training-with-fonds-1818-tickets-74705822125′ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

SUMMARY:Approaches to Domestic Violence in the Netherlands and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:According to the INTERVICT Institute and Research and Documentation Center in the Netherlands\, more than 200\,000 individuals fall victim to domestic violence every year. This scenario is happening in a country that is described as the one who “cares the most about human rights” according to the 2019 Best Countries Ranking. \n  \nSo\, why is domestic violence still such a deep wound in our “civilized” societies? \nHumanity of Things (HuOT) in partners with ARISE-NL community\, are setting their aim in the empowering and support of domestic violence victims by providing them with the vital information\, awareness and clear roadmap of the helping points in Netherlands\, by using new technologies and digital platforms. \nVictims need to have a knowledge survival tool kit available at any time in order to save lives\, prevent victims from falling in the abuse cycle as well as protecting the children that become traumatized survivors of these relationships. \n  \nThrough this event\, we want to bring together multiple stakeholders to create a strong task force focused in the field solutions that can be a role model world wise and can help the non-Dutch victims in the Netherlands\, to have a better support designed to their specific challenges. \nDomestic violence affects us all as a society and we should respond as such\, as together we are stronger. \n  \nWe will be joined by speaker Marisa Monteiro Borsboom: with a legal background\, as a lawyer\, mediator\, legal manager and lecturer\, this was still not enough. Her true calling is to advocate for humanity in the digital revolution. So\, with that in mind\, she became the President of Humanity of Things – Human\, Digital and Technological Literacy. \n  \nRegister via email: mqmlegalptnl@gmail.com.
