SUMMARY:Het Internet is aan Vernieuwing Toe
Een – geleende – uitspraak van hem: ‘first we shape our tools\, thereafter our tools shape us’.

SUMMARY:Future Session - Guiding Innovation: Towards a common processes and practices
DESCRIPTION:The Spindle and the Hague Humanity Hub have joined forces to organise a series of inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these aptly named “Future Sessions”\, we’ll explore the relevance of trends in innovation for the future of development cooperation. They are high in energy and always involve the input and unique perspective from an expert in his or her field. On June 25 we focus on the core of the innovation process: \nInnovation has become an imperative for the development sector\, but how do we produce a steady flow of well-designed solutions? This is a very hard to reach goal when clear parameters for successful innovation are lacking. \nThe usual approach to fulfil the need for well-designed solutions is to engage in lots of experimentation – often involving great risks and a success rate that is unpredictable. So how does innovation effectively address a problem\, evidence its impact\, and has the potential to be scaled? \nLearning from the outcomes of the Humanitarian Action Challenge\, an innovative challenge connecting Businesses and NGOs\,  Thomas Baar (Centre for Innovation\, Leiden University)\, with the facilitative help of experienced social innovator Mariken Gaanderse\, will focus on common challenges in innovation during this session. Together with you\, he will discuss how this relates to your experiences and how to set up standards to make our innovation processes more accountable and more responsible. \nThomas will share with you the challenges and successes at different stages of the innovation journey\, take a deep dive into the learnings of the brand new Humanitarian Innovation Guide and inspire you with its further developments. \n  \nRegister on The Spindle’s website

SUMMARY:Dialogue and dissent: Looking at the role of civil society in achieving SDG 6 by 2030
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Netherlands published its policy note ‘Dialogue and Dissent’ to give shape to a series of new Strategic Partnerships for ‘lobby and advocacy’. The key premise behind this is that civil society plays a crucial role in achieving the sustainable development agenda and standing up for social\, environmental\, economic and human rights. They are the ones who articulate their rights and needs; the ones who need to hold government and other actors to account; and lobby and advocate for changes in policies\, legislation and funding. But\, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) often cannot fulfil their role. \nAs part of the Dialogue and Dissent programmes\, 25 (consortia of) CSOs were selected as strategic partners in the area of lobby and advocacy for the period 2016-2020. This includes a number of partnerships around the broad theme of water\, including Watershed (focusing on strengthening water and sanitation governance); Voice for Change Partnership (focusing on several sectors including WASH) and Partners for Resilience (focusing on resilience amongst others in water resources management). \nThe key rationale behind these three partnerships is the recognition that the world faces a water crisis\, in which still too many people lack access to safely managed water supplies and sanitation facilities\, where people are facing increasing levels of water scarcity or are threatened by flooding. \nTo address this water crisis\, CSOs play a number of crucial roles such as: \n1. Claiming the human rights to water and to sanitation\n2. Holding government to account for their role as duty bearers in WASH service delivery and water resources management\n3. Ensuring they have a voice in discussions on access to and allocation of water resources \n  \nFor more information\, and to register\, see the IRC website

SUMMARY:'Linking Thinking' - Reflections on the Nexus
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFor over three decades\, the international aid community has recognised the importance of working more closely together\, in order to get better outcomes for people affected by ‘natural’ disasters and conflict-related crises. However\, achieving this in practice has proved remarkably difficult. What is new in the latest round of ‘linking’ thinking and has it a greater chance of success than previous efforts?\n\nThe Humanitarian – Development Nexus is high on the agenda. Again. Discussions about the Nexus lead to strong disputes within the humanitarian sector. Some humanitarian professionals argue they have been working with the Nexus for decades and that we just all should start working on it. Other humanitarian professionals\, confronted with the Nexus debate\, underline the differences between humanitarian action and development work\, and stress the humanitarian principles. All argue the Nexus has been discussed for decades\, but did not bring the desired results. \n• What can we learn from the discussions of the past decades?\n• Is the current context different?\n• What are useful ways forward?\n• And what is needed for this? \nKUNO asked researcher Joanna Macrae to take stock of the ongoing debate and to look forward. This resulted in the research-paper ‘Linking Thinking’ Why it is so hard and what can we do about it? which you can read here. \nKUNO kindly invites you to the presentation of the report ‘Linking Thinking’ on Friday 28 June. \nKick off by: Joanna Macrae. \nFirst reactions are given by: \n\nGerrit-Jan van Uffelen\, Van Hall Larenstein University\,\nInge Leuverink\, Cordaid.\n\nAfter that\, we would like to discuss the findings of the report and necessary next steps with all humanitarian professional present. \n\n  \nRegister by writing to kuno@kuno-platform.nl
