SUMMARY:Digitalisation & International Cooperation – Risks and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:New technologies provide great opportunities for development cooperation: accelerating change\, improving results and stimulating innovation. The ICRC gathered a large amount of international development and humanitarian NGO’s in London in December in order to reflect on the consequences of digitalisation. Topics included protecting civilians in the digital age\, opportunities for digital transformation & innovation\, weaponization of information and digital risks in armed conflict – a broad agenda that led to the realisation that collective norms on digital do-no-harm & digital opportunities are necessary. Through the conference they put together a report on the matter\, asking the key questions; \nHow can we promote digital do-no-harm?  And stimulate responsible innovation?  \nThe debate will present the findings of the report\, raise awareness and kickstart a reflection with the panel and you. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently working on a Digitalisation and Development Cooperation policy\, NGO’s are actively exploring new grounds; the ICRC report is extremely timely. \nDelphine van Solinge\, Adviser on Digital Risks for Populations at the ICRC will inform us about the challenges posed to humanitarian actors and conflict management in the digital era\, as well as ways forward to tackle them. It will be followed by a panel discussion including speakers from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, Partos\, the Red Cross\, and Leiden University Innovation Centre. Afterwards\, the discussion will be opened to include the audience in the debate on digitalisation & international cooperation. \nPlease register at this link here.\nThe amount of seats is restricted\, we will work on a first-come-first-serve base. \n  \nProgramme  \n14:30 : Walk-in with coffee & tea \n15:00 : Opening by Wim Janson\, Head of International Relations\, The Hague \n15:05 : Presentation of the Conference Report “Digital Risks in Situations of Armed Conflict” by Delphine van Solinge\, ICRC Geneva \n15:20 : Panel Discussion \n\n\n\nDutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, Tjeerd de Vries\nRed Cross\nPartos\nLeiden University Innovation Centre\, Thomas Baar\n\n\n\nModerated by Elisabeth van Steenhoven \n16:00 : Plenary Debate on Digitalisation & International Cooperation \n16:55 : Closing and follow-up \n17:00 : Networking Drinks \n

SUMMARY:In Vrede // In Peace
DESCRIPTION:74 years after the end of the Second World War\, the show In Vrede shows how the war scars still have an influence on our lives. How is it possible – despite the fact that we now live in peace – that many people seem to have no real peace with existence and with history? A show about the devastating and connecting power of stories. \n  \n“A worthy and impressive piece about the wounds that war leaves behind.” – ★★★★ De Volkskrant \n  \nFor this production\, the company collaborates with writer and translator Nabil Nabo. He fled from Syria and came in contact with BERG & BOS through the On File foundation. Nabil has translated the piece In Vrede into Arabic. Thus there is an Arabic surtitles present. \nNabil is also the model for the Syrian character in the play. His experiences about what it is like to connect to a new society after a flight form the basis for one of the storylines in the play. A storyline that represents the recent wars and the new Dutchmen we have welcomed in recent years. \nIn Vrede is a performance about the devastating and connecting power of stories. Devastating when stories are distorted or told from one predominant perspective\, and bound as big stories are told and all storytellers can speak. \n

SUMMARY:Making Matters Symposium
DESCRIPTION:With the NWO funded research project ‘Bridging Art\, Design and Technology through Critical Making’\, the consortium investigates how the concept of Critical Making can be developed further within the context of artistic research and (post)critical theory. \nThe symposium offers a platform for interdisciplinary exchange\, proposing to widen matters of making from maker culture to a wider set of creative practices that problematise the narrow focus on solutions in contemporary techno-creative industries. \nTo learn more about Critical Making visit www.criticalmaking.nl \nYou find the event page here\, more information to follow! \n  \nPartners in the consortium are: PhDArts / ACPA\, Creating 010\, Waag\, West Den Haag and Het Nieuwe Instituut.

SUMMARY:IATI Learning event: From publication to data use
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for ways to turn publishing in IATI into something meaningful for your organisation? Do you want to share your experiences with IATI (International Aid Transparency Initiative) as a tool to share and monitor progress within your programs? Then save the date for the next IATI Learning Event: Thursday\, the 9th of May.\nAmongst Dutch development organisations\, we see the focus shift to the actual use of data in IATI. We see a growing interest amongst organisations to unpack the black IATI box and to actually starting to use the IATI data in their advantage. IATI data starts to speak – for organisations\, alliances\, governments and the wider audience. We see new opportunities and challenges in the fields of data quality\, dash-boarding\, results reporting and data security. These are also some of the topics that will be discussed during this learning event. \nA detailed program will soon be announced! \nPrice: for members of Partos: free | others: 75 euros\n\nNote: please be aware that participants require a basic understanding of and preferably experience in publishing in IATI. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Seminar: 25 years after the Rwandan Genocide
DESCRIPTION:In less than a hundred days\, more than 800\,000 Rwandese people were murdered in a deliberate and well-organized act of genocide\, orchestrated by then-members of the Rwandan government.\nThe genocidal regime targeted the Tutsi population and moderate Hutu who opposed the killings. Many Hutu and Twa also lost their lives as the genocide unfolded in the context of a civil war between the Hutu-dominated government and a Tutsi-dominated rebel movement\, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). \nThe killings started on the 6th of April\, following a rocket attack that caused a plane carrying the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi to crash. Despite the presence of a considerable UN peacekeeping force at the outbreak of the violence\, the international community failed to intervene\, pulling most of their forces out and ignoring any pleas for help. This failure to act allowed the killings to continue until the 4th of July\, when Rwandan Patriotic Front forces\, then led by the current president Paul Kagame\, were able to take control of the country\, ousting those responsible for the genocide from the country. \nHow did the Rwandan Genocide come to be and why did it happen? Could it have been prevented if the international community had done more? If so\, how does humanity as a whole prevent such events from happening in the future? This seminar will address these questions. \nPlease note: this seminar will take place at the The Hague Campus\, Location Wijnhaven: Room 346 \nContact person: Daan Sanderse This link opens in a new tab: d.sanderse.2@umail.leidenuniv.nl \nSpeakers\nBert Ingelaere This link opens in a new tab\nFilip Reyntjens This link opens in a new tab\nBoth speakers are affiliated to the Institute of Development Policy\, University of Antwerp. Read their biographies This link opens in a new tab. \nDiscussant\nMargot Leegwater
