SUMMARY:Hague Talks - Where Do Human Rights Begin? In Small Places Close To Home.
DESCRIPTION:Where\, after all\, do universal human rights begin? In small places\, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory\, farm\, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man\, woman\, and child seeks equal justice\, equal opportunity\, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there\, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home\, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” \nWe’ve drawn inspiration for the Hague Talks on Human Rights Day http://www.un.org/en/events/humanrightsday/from the person who fought so hard for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be adopted 70 years ago: Eleanor Roosevelt\, a formidable person\, who chaired the drafting committee of what’s now the most translated document in the world. \nWhat we’ll be exploring is the lived experience of that document\, alongside human rights activists\, engaged artists\, passionate academics\, and asking what relevance does the Universal Declaration have today. \nMany people who don’t live in a country where freedom of expression is limited don’t realise how much work there is still to do to get human rights accepted\, enforced\, spread.  So what can WE do\, to make human rights a bigger part of our conversations? What can WE do to make human rights more universal? \nJoin us in The Peace Palace for a lively discussion about the roles we can all play. \nMore information:\nhttp://www.haguetalks.com/event/human-rights-begin-small-places-close-home/

SUMMARY:Film Screening "Peace Through Justice"
DESCRIPTION:The International Nuremberg Principles Academy presents the screening of the documentary \nInternational Nuremberg Principles Academy\nPeace Through Justice\nThe Legacy Of Thomas Buergenthal \nat the Omniversum in The Hague\, The Netherlands on 10 December 2018. \n\n\nThe documentary by Ilona Kalmbach and Sabine Jainski (competent filmproduktion) presents the life and legacy of Judge Thomas Buergenthal\, honorary president of the Advisory Council of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy\, 70 years after the adoption of those principles and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: seeking for accountability without revenge\, and promoting human rights worldwide. Since its founding\, Judge Buergenthal has been committed to the Nuremberg Academy. The film also shows the work of the Nuremberg Academy in dealing with crimes against humanity and supporting the fight against impunity for international crimes in our times. \nThomas Buergenthal’s life is exemplary in many ways. Surviving the Holocaust at the age of eleven\, he witnessed the aftermath of the war in Germany and emigrated to the U.S.\, where he made a model career in international law. As a professor\, he was one of the first to establish the field of International Human Rights Law. In addition\, he served as a judge on many international courts\, including the International Court of Justice\, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights\, the United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador and the U.N. Human Rights Committee. \nAlthough Thomas Buergenthal and his family were deported and his father killed in Buchenwald\, he overcame his desire for vengeance to deal with this past by a rule of law approach\, which he transmitted to his students all over the world. \n  \n10 December at 19:00 followed by a reception on site \nThe film will be screened in English. \nOnline registration is required. \nIn order to register for the event please fill in the registration form below. Kindly bear in mind that the venue has limited seating. Online registration will close once the venue has reached maximum capacity. \nhttps://www.nurembergacademy.org/events/film-screening-peace-through-justice-in-the-hague/
