SUMMARY:Meet HiiL - Scaling up partnerships: Discovering collaboration for justice innovation
DESCRIPTION:This event is reserved for Hub members. \nCollaboration Session – 27 November 2018\nMany people face justice problems. Every year\, 1 billion people around the world have a justice problem. 70% of these problems are never resolved. That’s why our mission is: by 2030\, 150 million people will be able to prevent or resolve their most pressing justice problems. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 16.3: equal access to justice for all. Unfortunately\, the world is seriously underperforming on SDG 16. \nWe are looking for collaboration. Peace\, justice and sustainable development are intrinsically linked. We realize we cannot change the world by ourselves\, we need to work together. We see the potential of and demand for cooperation. What (perhaps unexpected) partnerships could help us to reach our goal? And what can we offer to help others to reach theirs? \nWhat is the aim of this session? We want to discover potential partners in the Hub community. We are open to learning and sharing and finding mutual benefit from all. \nIf you are interested in finding potential collaborations with HiiL and maybe even other hub members\, join this exploratory session. \nSome challenges we are dealing with: \nWhat is the first step to scaling up (justice) innovation? \nHow do we finance (justice) innovation? \nCan we develop public/private partnerships? \nHow can we utilize new technologies to collect more data? \nHow do you visualise data research? \nCan we develop standard protocols\, like in the medical sector? \nHow can we measure the impact (added value) of (justice) innovations? \nGet involved! \nAre you working on innovation in peace and justice? We invite you to join us. Check out the dedicated Slack channel (#meet-hiil) for more information. \nLet’s make justice user-friendly and accessible for all! \n— \nWhen? 27 November 2018 \nWhere? Humanity Hub\, the Hague\, the Netherlands (3rd floor\, cafe) \n12.30-12.40 Introductions and word of welcome \n12.40-12.50 HiiL presentation and initial call for collaboration \n12.50-13.20 Round table discovery sessions \n13:20 – 14.00 Wrap up and conclusions \n

SUMMARY:Future Session #10 - Reinventing the Future with Open Innovation & Design
DESCRIPTION:*Registration required\, see below* \nIn 2018\, The Spindle and HumanityX (Centre for Innovation of Leiden University) collaborate in organising a series of monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these sessions\, we’ll explore the relevance of (technological) trends for the future of development cooperation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. See what’s going on and get more grip on the implications and ideas that would work.\nWhat we will do in this session: \nWe will start with an overview of global trends in technology\, supported by inspiring and relevant cases. After that\, we will work in small groups and look at how the selected organizations that are present can achieve the SDG’s if they had a “Dream Collaborator” utilizing these technologies. The focal themes of the session will be [Open Design/Open Source Technology/Permissionless Innovation] and we explore how these can drive inclusive change. \nThis session’s expert is Diderik van Wingerden. Diderik is a Pragmatic Idealist working on Digital and Open Source Innovation. Clients hire Diderik as Technical Project Lead and Open Design Expert. Diderik’s superpower is analysing and structuring. He has a solid background in Software Development\, Business Economics and Lean Innovation approaches and knows how to integrate these. SUMMARY:Hope(less)? Biographies of radicalization - Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Hope(less)? Biographies of radicalization\nA film by Voice4Thought\n(Sjoerd Sijsma\, Mirjam de Bruijn\, Boukary Sangaré\, Souleymane Adoum) \nIn this film we follow two researchers who\, on their turn\, follow people who live(d) through long periods of violence\, conflict and hardship in Chad and Mali. The stories they encounter are stories of lost hopes\, of feelings of being misunderstood\, and of radicalization in multiple ways. The two stories of the researchers show how working on such stories also influences their positions\, and finally radicalizes their positions. \nThis film tells the story of the process of radicalization. However\, it is mostly a reflection on this process\, and how it is an almost inevitable outcome of an unjust world. It raises questions such as: Is it possible to keep distance from the stories when you study them? How do you reflect on the suffering you see? And how does this  influence their work and the decisions they take? What do these stories tell us about political interventions in radicalization processes? \nThe film will be followed by a discussion. The discussion is moderated by Prof. dr. Mahaman Tidjani Aliou\, Professor of Political Science at the University Abdou Moumouni in Niamey\, Niger. \nPlace: Humanity Hub The Hague\nTime: 28 November\, 15.00 – 17.00 h.\nWith possibility to share thoughts in the bar of the Hub after the discussion \nRegistration is required:\nhttps://www.ascleiden.nl/news/documentary-screening-hopeless-biographies-radicalization

SUMMARY:Integrity in International Justice - Conference
DESCRIPTION:The International Nuremberg Principles Academy\, in co-operation with the Centre for International Law Research and Policy (CILRAP)\, is co-organizing an international expert conference on ”Integrity in International Justice” in the Peace Palace in The Hague\, the Netherlands\, on 1-2 December 2018. \nThe twenty years that have passed since the adoption of the Statute of the International Criminal Court in 1998 have seen several changes in international relations\, including increased scrutiny of the operation of international courts. There is concern that multilateralism is under growing pressure. However uncomfortable at times\, this environment of increased scrutiny provides a welcome opportunity to revisit the role of the individual in international justice institutions. Focusing on the standard and practice of “integrity” or “high moral character” is an open-ended necessity for international justice institutions facing the common challenge of professionalization. \nThe conference considers “integrity” in international justice from several angles\, including the following four: \n\nWhat could States Parties do better to uphold the “integrity” requirement\, including in election or appointment of high officials and oversight?\nWhich effective institutional measures are available to the international courts to give proper effect to the “integrity” standard?\nHow can individuals in international justice institutions increase their awareness of “integrity” and make it an active part of their professionalization?\nHow do the principles of “integrity” and independence relate to each other in international justice?\n\nConfirmed speakers include: Payam Akhavan\, Olympia Bekou\, Morten Bergsmo\, Emiliano J. Buis\, Hans Corell\, Gunnar Ekeløve-Slydal\, Gregory S. Gordon\, FAN Yuwen\, Jan Fougner\, Richard J. Goldstone\, Hanne Sophie Greve\, Bridget Inder\, Karim A.A. Khan\, Adel Maged\, Teresa McHenry\, Erik Møse\, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut\, Klaus Rackwitz and Christopher Staker. \nPlease find the draft program here This link opens in a new tab. \n1 December from 09:00 to 19:00 and 2 December from 09:00 to 18:00 \nOnline registration is required. \nIn order to register for the event please fill in the registration form here:\nhttps://www.nurembergacademy.org/events/integrity-in-international-justice
