SUMMARY:Open and responsible science: From harm to justice in knowledge production
DESCRIPTION:As part of ISS’ 70th anniversary celebrations\, we will host an event on Open and Responsible Science\, Engaged Research and Epistemic Justice: From harming to healing through knowledge co-creation. The event will be hybrid (both in-person and online). \n\n\n\nCan Open and Responsible Science (ORS) respond to the challenge of justice in access to knowledge (epistemic justice) given the staggering amount of inequality in academic knowledge? \n\n\n\nORS that seeks justice in access to knowledge puts equity between forms of knowledges and ways of knowing at the very centre of knowledge acquisition. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe discussion will revolve around the following questions: \n\n\n\nWhich injustices in knowledge production and co-creation do invited speakers experience in their (communities’) life and work? What are their demands towards academia/academics?What alternative forms of knowledge production and co-creation do they propose?\n\n\n\n\nSign up here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Democracy Drinks: Human Rights in Times of War and Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy\, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee and The Hague Humanity Hub are delighted to announce a new edition of the Democracy Drinks. Join us on 13 October at Grand Café Utopie (Waldeck Pyrmontkade 116) in The Hague\, as we turn our focus to human rights. Come along to discuss the situation of human rights in these times of war and crisis; and in particular what is needed and how we can respond. \n\n\n\nThe event will open with a speech by Antanina Maslyka\, Programme Manager Human Rights Defence at the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC). As an organisation working to strengthen the human rights movement and increase the public’s support for and awareness of human rights—and for those that defend them\, the NHC has worked with local human rights NGOs and experts all over (Eastern) Europe for 35 years. The last eight months have profoundly changed the landscape of their – and our – work\, showing us that freedom and democracy can never\, and nowhere\, be taken for granted. \n\n\n\nAt this coming edition of Democracy Drinks\, engage in a discussion on how real security and therefore sustainable\, lasting peace can only be achieved by building democratic\, free and rights-respecting societies. Explore how the changed geopolitical landscape affects the work of all human rights organisations\, network with organisations playing a role in determining the future of democracy\, and come away with new connections\, insights\, and goals. \n\n\n\nWhether you are a student\, a democracy defender\, working in an area connected to human rights or simply interested in the topic you are most welcome to join! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up

SUMMARY:Hague Talks: How to use Local Talent in Standing up for Climate Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is one of the most significant issues of our time and many feel compelled to stand up and act in response to the increasing climate crisis. This HagueTalks is about tapping into people’s strengths and ability to act in the face of increasing climate insecurities. Three climate action talks will provide distinct approaches to local action: from a young female lawyer in Hargeisa\, Somaliland; a multimedia climate artivist from Australia\, and a young peacebuilder based in the Netherlands. Their Talks will focus on concrete action\, what they have learned what works. Silver linings throughout these talks will be the importance of experiencing a sense of belonging to the community and recognizing the dynamics that support change \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nHana Daud Abdi – Founder of the Somali Women in Law\, Human Rights Activist. Awarded “young person of the year” in 2019\,  IDLO Program Coordinator (confirmed) \n\n\n\nGregg – an Australian born\, multi-disciplinary\, multimedia artist who recently launch his YouTube channel Gregg The Artivist (confirmed) \n\n\n\nTBC – United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY) \n\n\n\nModerator: Messina Laurette Manirakiza\, KPSRL Programming Officer\, with a background in Human Rights Law\, transitional justice and  gender in (post)conflict and fragile settings \n\n\n\n\nMore information and sign-up This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Film-Screening: The Territory
DESCRIPTION:THE TERRITORY This link opens in a new tab provides an immersive on-the-ground look at the tireless fight of the Indigenous Uru-eu-wau-wau people against the encroaching deforestation brought by farmers and illegal settlers in the Brazilian Amazon. With awe-inspiring cinematography and richly textured sound design\, the film takes audiences deep into the Uru-eu-wau-wau community and provides unprecedented access to the farmers and settlers illegally burning and clearing the protected Indigenous land. Partially shot by the Uru-eu-wau-wau people\, the film relies on vérité footage captured over three years as the community risks their lives to set up their own news media team in the hopes of exposing the truth. \n\n\n\nPremière in DEN HAAG: \n\n\n\nWEDNESDAY\, OCTOBER 26th\, 7:15pm – 9:15PM \n\n\n\nFILMHUIS DEN HAAG This link opens in a new tab\, Spui 191\, 2511 BN The Hague \n\n\n\nThe Film screening will be followed by a discussion on ‘The Brazilian Indigenous movement before International courts and Tribunals’.  \n\n\n\nTickets can be bought from: https://filmhuisdenhaag.nl/shop?id=12015604 This link opens in a new tab
