SUMMARY:Workshop - Better than being there: see how your online events can be so much better
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore and understand how your large events in 2021 can truly exceed your own expectations. We will show you what is possible and have you leave inspired\, armed with clear options. \n\n\n\nWe had the knowledge\, skills and abilities in remote working and collaborative online work needed to help. So we did. \n\n\n\nIn fact\, in 2020 we worked with international organizations such as UNICEF\, UNHCR and REN21 to help design\, produce and deliver their global conferences that were\, in so many ways ‘even better than being there’. \n\n\n\n“ImpactBasis helped us design and facilitate a highly interactive and engaging academy; sourcing and managing a platform that allowed for this\, co-developing the agenda\, leveraging their contacts to provide speakers and other experts like film production and live drawing\, that made all the difference to the event. We are thrilled with the feedback we have received from participants and speakers. We would highly recommend them – as a team they are professional yet human and great to team with!“ Rana Adib\, Executive Director\, REN21(Renewable Energy) \n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, we will show you a selection of platforms to tantalise and even get you into thinking about what is possible for you. And you will hear first-hand experiences of the secret sauce that can make a difference\, turning from a passive event into something truly meaningful. \n\n\n\nThere is so much to gain from online conferences: a more inclusive environment\, worldwide participation\, extended reach\, less environmental impact\, rationalised cost and the ability to truly immerse participants in the experience. All with not a single webinar in sight. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: This event is limited to a fixed amount of tickets. If you miss out this time please drop us a line hello@impactbasis.com for information on when we’ll run this event again. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, there are a limited number of complimentary tickets available for Hub members! \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Startup Tuesday The Hague: 7 sustainable lifestyle trends from conscious consumers
DESCRIPTION:The world is changing rapidly. Due to the corona pandemic we’ve been dealing with lockdowns\, curfews\, homeschooling\, teleworking and digital meetings. The pandemic also enhanced consumer consciousness as air travel became problematic and we realized how dependent we are on other countries in our global economy. These realizations induced a couple of new trends amongst conscious consumers. With this compact presentation Wyke Potjer and Asceline Groot from the online platform hetkanWel.nl (we can do this) will talk you through 7 sustainable lifestyle trends\, show you how this can impact your business and quiz you on the way with a few questions on sustainable consumer behaviour. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Webinar: Adapt to defend. The security dimension of climate change
DESCRIPTION:The security dimension of climate change is increasingly recognized by the Defence sector\, and Dutch and British voices have been leading internationally in raising awareness on this issue. Whereas climate change initially was considered just as a new risk factor\, attention has shifted to how the increase of extreme weather events impacts todays’ military capabilities\, how defence organisations and institutions can adapt and mitigate\, and to how the military can contribute to environmental peacebuilding efforts. Another area of attention is how military research and innovation could better align with energy transition objectives\, and become a test-bed and accelerator of new technologies and how new tech can be harnessed to reduce the climate impact of defence organisations. \n\n\n\nIn the run-up to COP26 This link opens in a new tab that will be organized at the end of 2021 (1-12 November\, Glasgow)\, this webinar\, that is co-organised by the British Embassy in the Netherlands and the Clingendael Institute\, will consider how the military can contribute more to reducing security risks related to climate change. When a post-Corona virus world emerges\, the military needs to be prepared to confront this challenge head-on.  \n\n\n\nThis event will focus attention on broadening the discussion of climate change by drawing upon the Planetary Security Initiative climate-security nexus research. How\, in what way and in what context can defence organisations be involved and play a role. For example\, what does this changing environmental (operational) context mean for MODs\, NATO and partners? What does this mean for defence\, targeted investments for defence and the bringing together of the nexus and expertise\, taking into account the Defence Vision 2035 This link opens in a new tab\, for example. \n\n\n\nProgramme:  \n\n\n\nThe webinar will be moderated by Louise van Schaik This link opens in a new tab\, Head of EU & Global Affairs at the Clingendael Institute \n\n\n\nWelcome by Joanna Roper This link opens in a new tab\, British Ambassador to the Netherlands  Poll\n\n\n\nClimate as a security risk: the need to act \n\n\n\nKey-note speaker: Gen. Three case studies will show how these peace activists conduct a non-violent direct action and their thoughts of keeping a peaceful movement and what are the lessons for strategic peacebuilding. Lisa Schirch will be a conversant who will frame questions having co-authored the SNAP – Synergizing Nonviolent Action and Peacebuilding – An Action Guide. The peace activists will talk about how peacebuilding and peace activism has been done in various repressive contexts. They will be sharing their own experience on what they are doing in terms of active direct non-violence and what are their questions about strategic non-violence and how it fits in the larger movement of peacebuilding and building of peaceful societies. The conversation will reveal the non-violent activist thinking strategically. Does it add up to the extending of peace constituency? It will reflect on who is thinking strategically in the context of Myanmar\, Hong Kong and Egypt. Or is it protective non-violence? How to keep peaceful strategies within the movement and avoid fragmentations? And how does this contribute to the peace constituency? What are the ways that we could encourage a culture of peace within activists’ movements in repressive contexts? \n\n\n\nDisclaimer: The speakers’ opinions are their own\, and do not necessarily represent the views of GPPAC or its members. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Women Delivering Justice: Achieving Gender Parity in the Justice Sector
DESCRIPTION:The equal representation of women in the justice sector is a human right\, guaranteed by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against and reinforced by the Beijing Platform for Action under the critical areas of concern on Women in Power and Decision-Making and on Human Rights of Women. \n\n\n\nDespite incremental country progress in achieving gender parity in the justice sector\, women continue to encounter overall social\, economic and institutional challenges to their full and effective participation as justice agents. Challenges range from gender stereotypes to sexual harassment\, time poverty\, limited opportunities to career advancement and obstacles to access leadership positions. In some cases\, barriers have been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. \n\n\n\nAgainst this background\, this event will highlight the importance of investing in the equal representation of women in the delivery of justice. It will seek to: \n\n\n\nidentify challenges to gender equality in the justice sector\, especially within the current COVID-19 context;discuss policy and programmatic directions for prioritizing gender balance in the justice sector; andprovide recommendations for better data\, research and analysis in support of SDG 16.7.1.\n\n\n\nThe event builds on IDLO’s work on women’s equal participation in the justice sector as featured in IDLO’s report entitled Women Delivering Justice: Contributions\, Barriers\, Pathways This link opens in a new tab. SUMMARY:Eliminating Discriminatory Laws: Achieving Gender Equality on Paper and in Practice During Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:Eliminating Discriminatory Laws: Achieving Gender Equality on Paper and in Practice During Challenging Times\n\n\n\nDiscrimination in law has severe repercussion to women’s lived realities – and more so now as the world is facing the impact of COVID-19. Without the protection of the law\, women and girls\, especially those facing intersectional discrimination\, continue to be left behind in accessing and enjoying their human rights. Globally\, over 2.5 billion women and girls are negatively impacted by discriminatory laws.  In many countries\, women are still not guaranteed equal legally treatment with men. There are still legal provisions that prevent married women from registering a business or signing a contract in the same manner as their husbands; or from traveling outside the family home. \n\n\n\nGlobal commitments have underscored the importance of eliminating discriminatory laws and the establishment of strong legal framework on gender equality. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) as well as the Beijing Platform for Action condemn discrimination against women in all its forms and urge legal protection of the rights of women through constitutions\, laws\, and competent justice institutions. \n\n\n\nThis event will highlight the urgent need to eliminate discriminatory laws across women’s lives\, with heightened focus on gender-based violence. The panel discussion will also identify promising approaches to expand political will and support for gender-equal legal reform. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\nOpening Remarks \n\n\n\nMs. Jan Beagle\, Director-General\, IDLO\n\n\n\nPanelists \n\n\n\nH.E Hosna Jalil\, Deputy Minister for Women’s Affairs (Policy and Planning)\, AfghanistanMs. Tea Trumbic\, Program Manager\, Women\, Business and the Law\, World BankMs. Anita E Baleda\, Chief Gender and Development Specialist\, Policy Development\, Planning\, Monitoring and Evaluation Division\, Philippine Commission on WomenMs. Katherine Meighan\, General Counsel\, IFADMs. Melissa Upreti\, Vice-Chair\, UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women and GirlsDr. Lesley Ann Foster\, Executive Director\, Masimanyane Women’s Center and Chairperson\, Gender-based Violence Committee\, South African Women Lawyers Association (SAWLA)\n\n\n\nModerator \n\n\n\nDr. Ilaria Bottigliero\, Director\, Policy\, Research and Learning\, IDLO\n\n\n\nAn interactive dialogue will follow the remarks and panel discussion.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:How Can Local Governments Build Sustainable Peace?
DESCRIPTION:LIVESTREAM \n\n\n\nOn International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims\, HagueTalks event will focus on the role of local governments in peacebuilding\, specifically their added and unique value and where the challenges lie for them. \n\n\n\nThe role of local governments in peacebuilding is underexposed and often overshadowed by (inter)national initiatives\, whilst local and context specific peace initiatives can be very successful and can have strong legitimacy when led by local governments. This HagueTalks event will take a closer look at  the role that local governments and its leaders can play in ensuring sustainable and peaceful development in their communities. This provides an opportunity for governments at local level to contribute to preventing conflicts\, building bridges and dialogue after conflict and promoting a peaceful environment. \n\n\n\nHagueTalks invited speakers from diverse backgrounds to share their stories and to give an answer to questions such as: What is the added and unique value of local governments in conflict prevention and peacebuilding? How can local governments connect with civil society and national government to implement successful peacebuilding initiatives? What are challenges for local governments in this field that may limit their options in contributing to peace? \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n\n\n\nMayor of Palmira from Colombia\, Mr. Oscar EscobarMayor of The Hague from Netherlands\, Mr. Jan van Zanen\n\n\n\nModerator of this event is Hajar Yagkoubi. SUMMARY:Defending democracy against its adversaries - The seventh annual Justice Stephen Breyer lecture on International Law
DESCRIPTION:The seventh annual Justice Stephen Breyer Lecture on International Law\n\n\n\nLiberal democracy — representation\, the rule of law\, and human rights — is the foundation of the trans-Atlantic alliance and a rules-based international order. The Biden administration has placed democracy at the heart of its policy agenda; in the words of its March 2021 Interim National Security Strategic Guidance\, “Democracy is essential to meeting all the challenges of our changing world.” Yet democracy is under threat worldwide from populists and rising authoritarian powers. \n\n\n\nStill\, civil societies continue to fight for their rights. In Belarus\, a pro-democracy movement led by teacher-turned-presidential-candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is bravely protesting the fraudulent August 2020 election\, despite violent repression by the government of Alexander Lukashenko. \n\n\n\nOn March 26\, as part of the seventh annual Justice Stephen Breyer Lecture on International Law\, Foreign Policy at Brookings will host Tsikhanouskaya for a keynote address that examines democracy and human rights in Belarus. Afterwards\, senior fellow and Fritz Stern chair Constanze Stelzenmüller will join Tsikhanouskaya for a conversation on how the United States and Europe should support democracy in Belarus and the surrounding region. A panel discussion on protecting democracy from both sides of the Atlantic will follow their conversation. \n\n\n\nViewers can submit questions by emailing events@brookings.edu or on Twitter using #Democracy. \n\n\n\nFor more info on panelists & registration\, click below. \n\n\n\n\nMORE INFO & REGISTRATION
