SUMMARY:Hague Hacks Festival 2019 - Set free!
DESCRIPTION:The Hague Hacks Festival multidisciplinary idea-creating event to brainstorm tech solutions to human rights challenges. Funded by ImpactCity \nThe Hague Hacks This link opens in a new tab strives to bridge the gap between human rights and technology. We facilitate and connect a range of trans-disciplinary actors\, to create and/or develop technology that empowers human rights defenders (H.R.D.s) and improves the safety and freedom of victims of human rights violations. The Hague Hacks Festival is our main ideation (idea creation) event of the year. We create a trans-disciplinary space where human rights defenders share their experiences and unpack human rights violations in their communities. \nAt The Hague Hacks Festival This link opens in a new tab\, we bring together tech experts\, software developers\, designers\, engineers\, etc.\, as well as H.R.D.s and diaspora members together. This plurality of perspectives enriches the problem-solving process and leads to innovative new tech ideas for human rights advocacy. We believe that these connections and ideas would never have occurred outside of our Festival Ideation sessions\, and that is why our goal is to be that bridge between the worlds of peace and technology. \nThis year’s theme for the Festival is Set Free: Tech to Empower Human Rights and Freedoms. We will be focusing on four challenges to human rights and freedoms: \n\nPolitical Participation (Nicaragua)\,\nGender Inequality (Bangladesh)\,\nPeace Education (Netherlands\, Northern Ireland\, Turkey/Kurdistan\, North Korea)\,\nRight to Expression and Association (Hong Kong)\,\nand Environment and Human Rights (International).\n\nThe Hague Hacks Festival is an opportunity to collectively engage in solving the problems we all want to see solved. We believe that your experience\, knowledge\, and talents would enrich the conversations and help lead to fruitful and effective new technologies that can empower human rights advocacy. \nAll of our workshops are facilitated by human rights defenders\, tech experts\, and community leaders. We highly recommend that you register for workshops in advance. SUMMARY:Masterclass: Working with Detained Populations in Greece and Libya
DESCRIPTION:Humanitarian aid workers and NGOs working with the detained populations in Greece and Libya face several complex ethical challenges when carrying out their work. Which challenges do they face and how can they deal with these ethical challenges?\n\n\nThe humanitarian interventions for detained migrants and asylum-seeking populations in Greece and Libya are confronted with enormous operational constraints\, while these populations experience the most severe needs. The horrific health conditions in detentions centres\, for example\, raise nagging questions about the quality of care. However\, in these situations the influence of humanitarians is extremely limited. This poses humanitarian aid workers and NGOs\, supporting these detained populations\, for complex ethical tensions related to care\, complicity\, responsibility\, the need for advocacy\, independence\, impartiality\, and even humanity. \nIn a recent report Working with Detained Populations in Greece and Libya: A Comparative of the Ethical Challenges Facing the International Rescue Committee\, Jason Phillips describes these ethical challenges in a structuralized manner and analyses the implications for humanitarian practitioners and their organizations. \nFor this Master Class\, KUNO invites other humanitarian professionals that are acquainted with the situation of the detained populations in Greece and Libya\, to discuss the ethical challenges that INGOs and their staff face. \n[av_button label=’Read more!’ link=’manually\,https://www.kuno-platform.nl/events/master-class-working-with-detained-populations-in-greece-libya/’ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n\n\nAbout Jason Phillips \n\n\nJason Phillips is currently an independent researcher and consultant based in Ottawa\, Canada. He is an experienced humanitarian with a demonstrated history of working at board\, field and senior HQ levels of the non-profit organization management sector. He has 20 years of NGO experience\, 18 years of which were at the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Furthermore\, Jason Phillips has academic\, teaching and research experience\, including a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science from The Johns Hopkins University.

SUMMARY:Tech Roadmapping - Be Ready for Growth & Scaling Up
DESCRIPTION:Scaling up your operations will most likely mean processing data in a way you haven’t done before. Wouldn’t you like to have an answer ready if someone (a donor or an investor\, for example) asks you how you’ll do that?\nIn this short exploratory workshop\, we’ll create your strategic tech roadmap together\, with measurable objectives and tasks! But there’s more: we’ll include the changes you’ll (still need to) be undergoing to become an empowered data-driven organisation. With Nicolas Höning from Seita. \nHow a tech strategy will help you\nNo matter if you start scaling operations tomorrow or in six months\, your stakeholders already want to know what your IT roadmap looks like. Think of donors\, investors\, board members\, your (prospective) staff or IT suppliers. \nHow you implement your tech and data strategy depends on what you do. You could choose to process all your data in Excel Spreadsheets or via Salesforce. Or\, maybe you plan to automate some workflows in-house. Maybe you are ambitious and will develop your own app or you think applying machine learning wold give you the edge. What matters is to express how technology and data will support your organizational goals\, and how your team and its backers can support pushing your company to new heights. \nWho is this for?\nOperation managers\, Impact entrepreneurs\, or IT managers who realise their organisations are on the brink of scaling up operations\, either from small to medium\, or from medium to large. It doesn’t matter if you already secured the funding for scaling up – this workshop could be even more useful before you apply for the funding\, so you’ll be able to present a better story to potential backers. CTOs or lead engineers welcome\, then we can go more into depth! \n[av_button label=’Buy your Ticket!’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/80479419109′ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \nAbout Seita and Nicolas\nSeita is an academic spin-off from Amsterdam Science Park\, with many years of experience in data science and cloud engineering\, now bundling their expertise to amplify impact: Their mission is to empower organisations in the sustainability development sector to act data-driven in their daily operations. Nicolas is a Seita co-founder and holds a PhD in computer science and wrote software for two startups and two “regular” companies. So he’s seen the good and the bad and will help build your case on this experience. He is ready to have his brain picked for opinions.

SUMMARY:Profiles of the Missing from Colombia
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of International Human Rights Day\, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is organizing a public discussion in The Hague on the effort now underway to address the huge legacy of missing persons in Colombia. As many as 120\,000 people are missing as a result of five decades of conflict. All sectors of society have been affected by disappearances – perpetrated by state actors\, paramilitary and guerrilla groups\, and organized crime. \nAt ICMP’s Profiles of the Missing from Colombia\, relatives of missing persons\, as well as political activists\, members of the armed forces and former guerrilla groups\, and members of indigenous communities and others will examine the causes of the conflict\, the impact of disappearances on society and the rule of law\, and the central role that families of the missing can and must play in implementing key provisions of the Peace Agreement. \nThe Peace Agreement signed in 2016 between the Government and the largest guerrilla group\, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)\, provides for specific measures to address disappearances and recognizes the central role of civil society and families of the missing and the de-mobilized FARC in providing information to the Search Unit for Missing Persons. \n[av_button label=’Register now!’ link=’manually\,https://www.eventbrite.com/e/profiles-of-the-missing-from-colombia-tickets-83311499939′ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \nThe event will be in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation in English!

SUMMARY:Expert Roundtable: The Nexus from a Refugee Programming Perspective
DESCRIPTION:In refugee settings humanitarian aid is often delivered for many years. Therefore\, refugee camps are advantageous settings to develop and strengthen links between humanitarian action and development work. KUNO presents an expert meeting with Richard Sandison and Bram Jansen to explore the humanitarian-development nexus from a refugee programming perspective.\n\nRichard Sandison will bring a practical perspective on implementing various nexus approaches in specific refugee settings\, based on his experiences in Malawi and Tanzania. Sandison will discuss the challenges in implementing a nexus approach in Malawi\, look at the linkages between informal and formal CP systems and first-hand experience in implementing the CRRF in Uganda and how it is aligned (or not aligned) with the nexus. \nBram Jansen will bring an academic perspective\, based on his anthropological fieldwork in South Sudan and Kenya. Jansen would like to explore the idea of refugee camps as ‘drivers for development’. Jansen will share examples of development interventions in camp contexts\, but also of more organic processes of change that have emerged in protracted refugee contexts. A specific topic of interest of Jansen is the expansion of humanitarian governance into wider refugee hosting regions and the opportunities and challenges this brings on a practical as well as a more theoretical level. \nTogether with practitioners\, policy makers\, and academics we would like to discuss several cases to explore how the nexus idea materializes and what challenges and concerns emerge from this. \n\n[av_button label=’Read more!’ link=’manually\,https://www.kuno-platform.nl/events/the-nexus-from-a-refugee-programming-perspective/’ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

SUMMARY:European Arms Exports and the Case of Yemen
DESCRIPTION:European arms exports are regulated by domestic law\, the European Common Position on arms export controls and the Arms Trade Treaty. These legal frameworks prohibits arms exports to countries where there is a clear risk that they might be used for internal repression or to commit serious violations of international humanitarian or international human rights law. \nThe reality\, however\, is different. The armed conflict in Yemen is a striking example. Despite an abundance of documented serious violations of international humanitarian law in Yemen committed by the Saudi Arabian-led military coalition\, many countries including Germany\, Italy\, Spain\, the UK and France continue to export arms\, components and spare parts and to provide crucial maintenance and support services. European arms companies are profiting\, but their wares are fueling the conflict\, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis\, and may even be contributing to international war crimes. \nThese exports are a flagrant example of non-compliance with arms export control laws. Can the European defense industry and authorities responsible for authorizing arms exports to regions of conflict be held to account for their roles in serious human rights and international humanitarian law violations? Which legal avenues can be used to address their roles in these violations? \nTo tackle these and other questions\, ECCHR together with Mwatana for Human Rights\, Amnesty International\, the Campaign Against Arm Trade and Rete Disarmo invite you to a panel discussion with: \n\nRadhya Almutawakel\, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights (Yemen).\nMiriam Saage-Maaß\, head of ECCHR’s Business and Human Rights program (Germany).\nRobert Heinsch\, Associate Professor of Public International Law\, Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies & Director Kalshoven-Gieskes Forum on International Humanitarian Law\, Leiden University.\nMarina Aksenova\, Professor of Comparative and International Criminal Law\, IE University\, Madrid.\n\nModerated by Wolfgang Kaleck\, ECCHR General Secretary. \nRegistration is mandatory! Please note that there will be photography on event premises at The Hague Humanity Hub! With your presence at the event you agree that pictures taken may be used for promotional purposes by the Humanity Hub and its partners. \n[av_button label=’Read more’ link=’manually\,https://www.ecchr.eu/en/event/european-arms-exports-and-the-case-of-yemen-how-to-hold-governments-and-corporate-actors-accountable-for-contributing-t/’ link_target=” size=’large’ position=’center’ label_display=” icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue800′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’theme-color’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]

DESCRIPTION:Join panel members Dr. Sara Davies\, Dr. Karen Smith\, Prof. Séverine Autesserre\, Dr. Eamon Aloyo\, and Dr. Cristina G. Stefan for a discussion on the state of the R2P doctrine. \nPlease note that event time has changed from 5 PM to 4:30 PM! \nFrom the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect\, R2P ’embodies a political commitment to end the worst forms of violence and persecution.’ It was established in order to avoid a repeat of the atrocities that took place during the 1990s in Rwanda and Bosnia\, whilst also working to maintain the respect for sovereignty and non-use of force as enshrined by the UN Charter. \nR2P was adopted by Heads of State in 2005\, and since then steps have been taken to interpret the principle correctly for its implementation. This has not been a smooth process and there remains much debate surrounding the efficacy of the principle and how it is weighed against state sovereignty. At this panel discussion\, five distinguished scholars will debate this topic and answer questions from the audience. \nWalk in: 17:00-17:30\nPanel discussion: 17:30-18:45\nDrinks reception: 18:45-19:30 \nUN Youth Impact invites you to stay afterwards for a drinks reception in the Hub café.
