SUMMARY:Integrity in International Justice - Conference
DESCRIPTION:The International Nuremberg Principles Academy\, in co-operation with the Centre for International Law Research and Policy (CILRAP)\, is co-organizing an international expert conference on ”Integrity in International Justice” in the Peace Palace in The Hague\, the Netherlands\, on 1-2 December 2018. \nThe twenty years that have passed since the adoption of the Statute of the International Criminal Court in 1998 have seen several changes in international relations\, including increased scrutiny of the operation of international courts. There is concern that multilateralism is under growing pressure. However uncomfortable at times\, this environment of increased scrutiny provides a welcome opportunity to revisit the role of the individual in international justice institutions. Focusing on the standard and practice of “integrity” or “high moral character” is an open-ended necessity for international justice institutions facing the common challenge of professionalization. \nThe conference considers “integrity” in international justice from several angles\, including the following four: \n\nWhat could States Parties do better to uphold the “integrity” requirement\, including in election or appointment of high officials and oversight?\nWhich effective institutional measures are available to the international courts to give proper effect to the “integrity” standard?\nHow can individuals in international justice institutions increase their awareness of “integrity” and make it an active part of their professionalization?\nHow do the principles of “integrity” and independence relate to each other in international justice?\n\nConfirmed speakers include: Payam Akhavan\, Olympia Bekou\, Morten Bergsmo\, Emiliano J. Buis\, Hans Corell\, Gunnar Ekeløve-Slydal\, Gregory S. Gordon\, FAN Yuwen\, Jan Fougner\, Richard J. Goldstone\, Hanne Sophie Greve\, Bridget Inder\, Karim A.A. Khan\, Adel Maged\, Teresa McHenry\, Erik Møse\, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut\, Klaus Rackwitz and Christopher Staker. \nPlease find the draft program here This link opens in a new tab. \n1 December from 09:00 to 19:00 and 2 December from 09:00 to 18:00 \nOnline registration is required. \nIn order to register for the event please fill in the registration form here:\nhttps://www.nurembergacademy.org/events/integrity-in-international-justice

SUMMARY:Meet Mercy Corps Technology for Development Team
DESCRIPTION:This event is reserved for Hub members. \nOn the 5th of December join us and Alan Donald\, Senior Director of Technology for Development at Mercy Corps\, for lunch at the Humanity Hub Café to discuss: \n\nhow his team is partnering with technology company partners to develop digital solutions to tough global challenges;\nhow they set an example of the ethical use of technology to their peers\, their donors and the governments we work with;\nHow they innovate programs around the world to help create a world of digital inclusion and opportunity.\n\nBeyond meeting urgent needs\, Mercy Corps works to strengthen communities for the future and set lasting change in motion. \nTechnology equips their teams with better tools and information so they can work more efficiently and make a positive difference for more people. \nWith support from Cisco and other tech partners\, Mercy Corps is designing and deploying new technology in our operations and programs. The result: streamlined processes; targeted\, data-driven programming; and tools that can be scaled and replicated to make an impact beyond a single community. \nOver the last year\, Mercy Corps has been able to expand successful programming\, applying what they learned in one community to develop locally relevant solutions in others while also working with partners and other NGOs to build a shared\, nuanced understanding of the regulatory and ethical factors they must consider when introducing technology in new contexts. \nInterested? Please register by joining the slack channel #meet_mercycorps\nHow to join the slack channel? Just click on the following link. \nPlease bring your own lunch or you can always buy the Humanity Hub lunch at our Café.

SUMMARY:Interactive Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This Declaration is meant to protect everyone’s human rights equally. However\, this does not always happen in the real world. How would it feel to struggle for your human rights? What is needed for everyone to feel protected? What can we do to help? \n‘Interactive Human Rights’ is a new concept developed by young people in The Hague and it consists of three interactive experiences that focus on different issues surrounding our inalienable human rights. You can participate in the experience from 11:00 – 16:00 and each experience takes 10 – 15 minutes to complete. You can do one\, two or all three! \nMore information:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1921047074669136/ \nClick the link below to book your free ticket now:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/interactive-human-rights-tickets-52914709320 This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:International Conference on Integrity & Anti-Corruption
DESCRIPTION:This conference is part of the Netherlands’ Week of Integrity\, a ICC Netherlands initiative fostering public-private cooperation in the field of integrity and anti-corruption. The initiative supports the UN Global Goals. \nWe live in a  world where “the goal justifies the means” has become an acceptable school of thought for far too many. A world where integrity isn’t talked about nearly enough. \n  \nReason for ICC Netherlands to take the initiative to organise a high-level international conference on Integrity and Anti-Corruption\, bringing together academics\, experts from the public and private sector and NGOs to discuss current matters\, raise awareness and promote ethical behaviour in both the workplace and in the boardroom. Centrale themes of the conference are ‘collective action’ and ‘the integrity advantage’. This conference is part of the Netherlands’ Week of Integrity\, a ICC Netherlands initiative fostering public-private cooperation in the field of integrity and anti-corruption. The initiative supports the UN Global Goals. \nThe event is ideal for board members\, integrity and compliance professionals working in both the private and the public sector\, in academia and NGO’s.

SUMMARY:Hague Talks - Where Do Human Rights Begin? In Small Places Close To Home.
DESCRIPTION:Where\, after all\, do universal human rights begin? In small places\, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory\, farm\, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man\, woman\, and child seeks equal justice\, equal opportunity\, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there\, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home\, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” \nWe’ve drawn inspiration for the Hague Talks on Human Rights Day http://www.un.org/en/events/humanrightsday/from the person who fought so hard for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be adopted 70 years ago: Eleanor Roosevelt\, a formidable person\, who chaired the drafting committee of what’s now the most translated document in the world. \nWhat we’ll be exploring is the lived experience of that document\, alongside human rights activists\, engaged artists\, passionate academics\, and asking what relevance does the Universal Declaration have today. \nMany people who don’t live in a country where freedom of expression is limited don’t realise how much work there is still to do to get human rights accepted\, enforced\, spread.  So what can WE do\, to make human rights a bigger part of our conversations? What can WE do to make human rights more universal? \nJoin us in The Peace Palace for a lively discussion about the roles we can all play. \nMore information:\nhttp://www.haguetalks.com/event/human-rights-begin-small-places-close-home/

SUMMARY:Film Screening "Peace Through Justice"
DESCRIPTION:The International Nuremberg Principles Academy presents the screening of the documentary \nInternational Nuremberg Principles Academy\nPeace Through Justice\nThe Legacy Of Thomas Buergenthal \nat the Omniversum in The Hague\, The Netherlands on 10 December 2018. \n\n\nThe documentary by Ilona Kalmbach and Sabine Jainski (competent filmproduktion) presents the life and legacy of Judge Thomas Buergenthal\, honorary president of the Advisory Council of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy\, 70 years after the adoption of those principles and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: seeking for accountability without revenge\, and promoting human rights worldwide. Since its founding\, Judge Buergenthal has been committed to the Nuremberg Academy. The film also shows the work of the Nuremberg Academy in dealing with crimes against humanity and supporting the fight against impunity for international crimes in our times. \nThomas Buergenthal’s life is exemplary in many ways. Surviving the Holocaust at the age of eleven\, he witnessed the aftermath of the war in Germany and emigrated to the U.S.\, where he made a model career in international law. As a professor\, he was one of the first to establish the field of International Human Rights Law. In addition\, he served as a judge on many international courts\, including the International Court of Justice\, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights\, the United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador and the U.N. Human Rights Committee. \nAlthough Thomas Buergenthal and his family were deported and his father killed in Buchenwald\, he overcame his desire for vengeance to deal with this past by a rule of law approach\, which he transmitted to his students all over the world. \n  \n10 December at 19:00 followed by a reception on site \nThe film will be screened in English. \nOnline registration is required. \nIn order to register for the event please fill in the registration form below. Kindly bear in mind that the venue has limited seating. Online registration will close once the venue has reached maximum capacity. \nhttps://www.nurembergacademy.org/events/film-screening-peace-through-justice-in-the-hague/
