SUMMARY:International Day of Peace 2018
DESCRIPTION:Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace\, both within and among all nations and peoples. \nThe United Nations Member States adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 because they understood that it would not be possible to build a peaceful world if steps were not taken to achieve economic and social development for all people everywhere\, and ensure that their rights were protected.  The Sustainable Goals cover a broad range of issues\, including poverty\, hunger\, health\, education\, climate change\, gender equality\, water\, sanitation\, energy\, environment and social justice. \n \nSustainable Development Goal 16 “Peace\, Justice and Strong Institutions” calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development\, providing access to justice for all and building effective\, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. \nA peaceful society is one where there is justice and equality for everyone. Peace will enable a sustainable environment to take shape and a sustainable environment will help promote peace. \nThe theme for the International Day of Peace in 2018 is “The Right to Peace – The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70” \nThe theme celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \nThe Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world\, the Declaration was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.\nThe Universal Declaration – the most translated document in the world\, available in more than 500 languages – is as relevant today as it was on the day that it was adopted. \n  \n“It is time all nations and all people live up to the words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, which recognizes the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human race. This year marks the 70th anniversary of that landmark document.” — Secretary-General António Guterres \nThe Universal Declaration states in Article 3. “Everyone has the right to life\, liberty and security of person.” These elements build the foundation of freedom\, justice and peace in the world. \nYet\, the Universal Declaration does not include a separate article on “Right to Peace”. This is why we ask you this year: \nWhat does “The Right to Peace” mean to you? Share your ideas with us through #peaceday and #standup4humanright. \nIn the lead up to the International Day of Peace on 21 September\, we call upon all to take action. \nYou can support SDG 16 Peace\, Justice and Strong Institutions by seeking  peaceful resolution of conflict when disagreements arise around you.  You can be part of the solution by taking small steps. You can prevent an injustice at school or in your community by adopting a non-violent approach to problem solving and reporting potential crimes\, including online bullying.\nYou can promote human rights by collecting and promoting videos of as many articles as possible in as many languages as possible. Record yourself reading one of the 30 articles of the Declaration in any of the 135 languages currently available and share your video with your friends. \nYou can engage by speaking up when others are at risk and stand with others’ human rights at work\, in school and around the dinner table. \nYou can reflect how each of us can stand up for rights\, every day. \nHuman rights are everyone’s rights.

SUMMARY:Future Session #7: Exclusion by Technology
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, The Spindle and HumanityX (Centre for Innovation of Leiden University) collaborate in organising a series of monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these sessions\, we’ll explore the relevance of (technological) trends for the future of development cooperation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. See what’s going on and get more grip on the implications and ideas that would work! \nIn this session\, Tin Geber\, the new social innovation expert with Hivos\, will be giving a workshop on exclusion by technology. \nThe following themes will be discussed during this session: \n– Exploring the reasons and trends behind the widening gap of techno-literacy.\n– Analysing patterns of techno-colonialism in development.\n– Identifying power dynamics and politics of data production\, ownership and use.\n– Learning about implicit and explicit methods of exclusion: from algorithmic bias to the Mosaic Effect.\n– Jointly exploring subversion and deconstruction of techno-colonialism. \nWhat can you expect from it? \n– Increasing understanding of new (technology) trends.\n– Identifying potential applications and use cases with real-life examples.\n– Knowing how to start leveraging these opportunities for your organisation.\n– Knowing trajectories to bring ideas further\, the networks and methods to do so. \nLocation: The Hague Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, The Hague\nDate: Tuesday the 25th of September\nTime: 15.30h-18.30h with networking drinks after! \nSign up here:\nhttp://thespindle.org/event/future-session-8/

SUMMARY:Accountability for Conflict-Related Sexual Crimes in Eastern Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Sexual crimes related to the conflict in Eastern-Ukraine have been allegedly committed since the beginning of the armed conflict in early 2014. The United Nations observed that ‘allegations of sexual violence perpetrated by all parties involved in hostilities are entrenched in the narratives of people living along the contact line’. Cases of sexual violence are usually under-reported\, due to prevailing unease about this issue\, the stigma and trauma associated with it\, as well as\, in this case\, the limited access to Eastern Ukraine territories. Further\, victims and witnesses are often reluctant to speak\, out of fear of reprisals. \nAgainst this backdrop\, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its partner organisation the Eastern-Ukrainian Centre for Civic Initiatives (EUCCI) have embarked on a project of gathering and analysing evidence of sexual crimes in Donbass\, Ukraine. In the implementation of this project\, FIDH and EUCCI have uncovered mounting evidence of heinous cases of sexual crimes committed mostly in detention facilities operated by members of separatist paramilitaries and quasi-state institutions\, but also attributed to members of Ukrainian security services and pro-Kyiv volunteer battalions. \nFIDH and EUCCI argue that these crimes have been committed in the context of and were associated with the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine\, and/or as part of a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population\, and therefore may amount to war crimes and/or crimes against humanity. A Communication will be submitted to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The Communication\, filed under Article 15 of the ICC Statute\, aims to support the Prosecutor’s ongoing preliminary examination of the situation in Ukraine\, opened since 25 April 2014\, and to persuade the Prosecutor to open of a full investigation into ICC Statute crimes committed in Ukraine\, including sexual crimes. \nModerator\n• Delphine Carlens\, Deputy Head of the International Justice Desk\, FIDH \nPanelists\n• Testimony by Iryna Dovgan\n• Alexandre Prezanti\, partner of Global Diligence LLP\, retained by FIDH to assist EUCCI and FIDH with the documentation and analysis of evidence\, and drafting of a communication to the ICC on sexual crimes in Eastern Ukraine\n• Volodymyr Shcherbachenko\, Head of the EUCCI\n• Nataliia Hrytsenko\, legal analyst\, EUCCI. \nPlease register using the following link:\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/Vk66tXqxl0qBOjld2
