SUMMARY:Community Programming Board
DESCRIPTION:The CPB was created to advise the Hub on developing the community and ensure that the Hub programming is of value to both the community and ecosystem by identifying and creating opportunities to connect and collaborate. After experimenting with this in 2020 we would like to bring it to the next level this year. We will also be inviting new members to constitute a cross section of the community with about 12 people. Joining the CPB is a commitment to join 7-8 meetings per year. \n\n\n\nSome of the key activities for this year will include: \n\n\n\nPut to practice the seasonal quarterly theme concept for Hub programming that we developed together last year Develop a cornerstone event format to foster connection and collaboration within the Hague ecosystem on specific themes Keep developing member peer to peer groups Continue developing the Hub as an SDG House (first project: SDG Traineeship programme) Co-create\, identify and leverage ad hoc programming and event opportunities for the community\n\n\n\nOther potential activities on the horizon include the development of the Hub as a public debating platform\, activities to boost the international reputation of the Hague ecosystem\, and further cultivate the Hub as hub for development and access to talent. \n\n\n\nPlease send an email to programming@humanityhub.net if you would like to attend. \n\n\n\nNote: The Community Programming board is set\, but members can join the meetings as guests.

SUMMARY:The decolonization of aid #5: the role of the donor
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday 13 Oct 2021\, 15:30 – 16:45Type: WebinarSpoken Language: EnglishRoom: Zoom \n\n\n\n A series of dialogues organized by ISS\, Kuno and Partos\, highlighting various aspects of decolonization. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n Smruti Patel\, Founder & Director Global Mentoring Initiative (GMI) and Founder and Member of Alliance for Empowering Partnership (A4EP).Professor Dirk-Jan Koch\, Professor International Trade & Development Cooperation\, Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands).\n\n\n\nAll dialogues in this series will be moderated by: \n\n\n\nKiza Magendane\, The Broker\, knowledge broker\, essayist and writer\, andThea Hilhorst\, professor Humanitarian Aid at the International Institute of Social Studies\n\n\n\nAbout the series\n\n\n\n#BLM debates and other anti-racism protests gave the discussion about the decolonization an impulse. Blogs\, panel discussions (sometimes very heated) and Tweets stumbled over one another. We witnessed many statements and opinions\, but perhaps not so much common ground from which to proceed. \n\n\n\nKUNO\, Partos and the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) take one step back and approach the discussion in a series of talks. Step by step\, they highlight an aspect of this debate. We ask two experts to engage in a conversation with one another to explore the controversies and perhaps find some common grounds. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Imagining solidarity in international and regional law
DESCRIPTION:The Asser Institute will host a conference on the theme of ‘Imagining solidarity in international and regional law’ from 28 – 29 October 2021. \n\n\n\nThe programme for this event is out now. Register here. \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nSolidarity is a core normative ideal underpinning both the development of modern international law as well as the European project. Solidarity has been perceived as the guiding principle in altering the outdated structure of international relations from an order promoting self-interest of States to one that pursues community interests and attempts to find solutions to problems that affect all humankind. \n\n\n\nIn the context of public international law\, solidarity has been used as a legal principle in terms of international peace and security. In the European Union (EU) context\, it has been invoked primarily during the eurozone and refugee crises. In the African Union (AU)\, solidarity has been part of the principles since the creation of the Organisation for African Unity in 1963. \n\n\n\nSolidarity also emerged as an objective in the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS). More recently\, solidarity has been invoked as a core principle during international discussions around the distribution of the coronavirus vaccine. This exemplifies the diversity of ways in which the principle of solidarity has been utilised as a core value in shaping international and regional legal regimes.  \n\n\n\nThe conference will include papers detailing the multiplicity of ways the principle of solidarity can be used both in international and regional law. These contributions revolve around how solidarity can/should be deployed to achieve a variety of aims\, including in relation to the environment\, human rights\, development\, peace and security\, migration\, and other fields\, in a variety of contexts across the globe\, whether regional integration projects (EU\, AU\, and others) or as part of public international law. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nOver two days\, this conference will feature international and renowned academics and legal scholars from a multiplicity of research fields. The keynote speakers are Prof. E. Sharpston (former Advocate General of the CJEU) and Prof. D. Tladi (Professor of International Law\, University of Pretoria)\, and will include panels on: \n\n\n\nThe principle of solidarity in international and regional law: A general overviewSolidarity: The view from the Global SouthSolidarity in EU migration and asylum lawSolidarity in EU law: Case-studiesSolidarity in international law: Case-studies\n\n\n\nRead the full programme. \n\n\n\n\nRegister now.

SUMMARY:Conference on the Future of Europe: The EU and its Southern neighbourhood
DESCRIPTION:LINKS Europe and The City of The Hague are pleased to invite you to participate in this policy dialogue\, which is the second in a series of activities that they are organising together as part of the debate in the framework of the Conference on the Future of Europe process. This event will be held at the offices of LINKS Europe\, Lange Voorhout 43\, in The Hague on Thursday\, 28 October 2021\, from 1600-1800. \n\n\n\nEurope’s Southern Neighbourhood stretches from the Atlantic coast of the Sahel region of Africa to the Khyber Pass\, and is made up of various regions\, including the Sahel\, North Africa and the Levant\, and the Arabian Peninsula. Iran and Afghanistan\, whilst not in the immediate neighbourhood\, are close and important enough to require particular attention. \n\n\n\nThe EU is already heavily involved in the region but the overall strategy is often perceived to be patchy and insufficient. In the Sahel\, the EU is preparing to deploy a large military mission; the Union of the Mediterranean has the ambition to provide a complimentary process to the EU’s own integration processes; and in the Indian Ocean the EU operates a naval mission to combat piracy – one of eleven missions currently deployed in the Southern neighbourhood. The EU is playing an important role in the discussions around the JCPOA with Iran. But as the recent crisis in Afghanistan has shown\, the EU’s own capacity to act with its own resources is embarrassingly insignificant. As the United States shifts its strategic posture towards the Indo- Pacific region\, many are expecting Europe to step-up and step-in. Does Europe have the capacity\, or even the vision to do this? What needs to happen in the short and medium term and what are the tools required? One thing appears to be certain: to succeed the EU needs to approach the Southern neighbourhood with an open mind; it must listen carefully both to its own citizens\, as well as to the citizens of the neighbouring countries; and it must always keep its eyes wide open\, for both risks and opportunities. \n\n\n\nThe policy dialogue will look at how the EU engages with its southern neighbourhood\, the impact of the Southern neighbourhood on the EU\, and issues related to migration\, radicalisation\, development\, and conflict resolution. It will explore particularly whether there are opportunities that can be exploited in order to make this relationship more mutually beneficial. \n\n\n\nParticipants to the policy dialogue will hear short presentations from four guest speakers\, after which every participant present will be asked to contribute their views on the topic in short 1–2-minute presentations\, followed by a general discussion. Views from the meeting will be reflected in a short summary of proceedings\, which will form part of the final submissions to the Conference on the Future of Europe. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event is required. If you require any more information\, please email: wmurray@links-europe.eu. \n\n\n\nThe event will be held under COVID-19 guidelines – attendees will need to present a proof of recovery\, vaccination\, or test before entry. \n\n\n\n\nRegister!

SUMMARY:Online event: Protection of Fundamental Rights and the Rule of Law in the EU
DESCRIPTION:Together with the Legal Network for Protection of Democracy from Slovenia\, the NHC invites you to an online seminar on the protection on fundamental rights and rule of law in the EU. The event will be held coming Friday\, 12 November 2021\, from 10:00 to 14:30 CET\, where NHC’s Executive Director Pepijn Gerrits and Programme Manager Joeri Buhrer Tavanier will be part of the panel. \n\n\n\nContinued rule of law backsliding and disrespect by EU member states towards the principles upon which the EU was founded reiterate the need to continue the conversation to protect the rule of law. Alongside raising awareness within our own member state\, cross border cooperation is essential in creating lasting change. \n\n\n\nIn the last two months of the Slovenian EU Presidency\, the NHC together with the Legal Network for Protection of Democracy \, would like to reflect on the developments in the past months within Slovenia and the EU at large. The first session we will zoom in on the narratives and tactics that are used in justifying rule of law backsliding in Hungary and parallels that might be drawn to the current Slovenian context. In the second session we will look at regional relations\, the impact of these relations and how we can use these relations to work together to better defend the rule of law. Find out more here. \n\n\n\nSign up for the event by sending an email pic@pic.si to receive a zoom link or join us via Facebook live here. \n\n\n\nThis event is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Slovenia.

SUMMARY:Conference ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in the Netherlands'
DESCRIPTION:The regulation of multinational corporations\, especially in situations of negative impact\, poses challenging questions. Current developments show a transformation of voluntary and sector driven guidelines into legally binding CSR obligations that have extraterritorial application. What will this mean for corporations and the people impacted by their conduct? The conference ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in the Netherlands: towards mandatory human rights due diligence legislation’\, organised by the Open Universiteit\, takes place on 12 November 2021. \n\n\n\nA Dutch perspective: national and international exchange\n\n\n\nThe conference addresses this question from a Dutch and comparative perspective by discussing recent legislative developments in the Netherlands and how these are influenced by international developments. Also\, because the Netherlands hosts a significant number of multinational corporations\, its regulatory landscape might in turn have consequences across the globe\, as the different cases against Shell prove. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nProf. dr. Nicola Jägers will deliver the key note in which she reflects on the Dutch developments against the broader regional and international developments\, setting the stage for the panel discussions. Policy makers\, lawyers\, academics and NGOs will offer different perspectives on the following three topics:  \n\n\n\nThe implementation of mandatory human rights due diligenceThe business-state nexus and institutional incentivesThe impact of mandatory human rights due diligence on access to remedies\n\n\n\nSee full program. \n\n\n\nAudience\n\n\n\nThe conference will be of interest to both a Dutch and international audience and we invite both academics\, and other stakeholders with an interest in the topic to participate. \n\n\n\nPractical details\n\n\n\nThe conference takes place on on 12 November 2021 from approximately 10:30 until 16:30h.Location: The Hague Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, The HagueThe conference is free to attend and registration is required.\n\n\n\n\nRegister!

SUMMARY:TOWARDS A LANDMINE FREE WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Until November 20\, the photo exhibition Towards a Landmine Free World can be seen in the Atrium in the City Hall. This exhibition is organized in the context of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) that will take place from November 15 until November 19 at the World Forum in the Hague. \n\n\n\nMine Action This link opens in a new tabThis photo exhibition is organized in light of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC). This UN Treaty is an important instrument in mitigating the use and impact of landmines. More than 60 countries and areas worldwide are faced with a landmine problem. Landmines and other explosive remnants of war still cause 10 to 15 victims every day\, of which almost half are children. In addition\, landmines make large areas unsafe for construction and agriculture. To improve the safety of people in mine-affected countries and to address the root causes of instability\, it is vital that countries invest in Mine Action. \n\n\n\nPresidency the Netherlands Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC)The Netherlands is the 8th largest donor worldwide in Mine Action. This past year\, the Netherlands was President of the APMBC This link opens in a new tab. During the Netherlands Presidency\, three important pillars were highlighted: Innovation – by supporting innovative solutions\, such as the use of 3D printed mines for training purposes. Inclusivity – by including all needs of mine-affected communities in demining\, with a specific focus on mental health and psychosocial support. (Local) Capacity Building – by sharing knowledge and expertise among mine clearance authorities worldwide. Every year States and organizations meet to discuss the progress of the Convention in a Meeting of States Parties (MSP). The 19th MSP will be held from 15 to 19 November 2021 in the World Forum This link opens in a new tab in The Hague. \n\n\n\nPartnersThe Netherlands supports six organizations that are committed to Mine Action: The United Nations Mine Action Service This link opens in a new tab (UNMAS); Humanity and Inclusion This link opens in a new tab (HI); The HALO Trust This link opens in a new tab; Mines Advisory Group This link opens in a new tab (MAG); Danish Refugee Council This link opens in a new tab (DRC)\, formerly known as Danish Demining Group (DDG); Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining This link opens in a new tab (GICHD). \n\n\n\nThe photos in this exhibition come from the partner organizations mentioned above and from the International Campaign to Ban Landmines This link opens in a new tab (ICBL)\, a global network of non-governmental organizations working towards a mine-free world. The photos were taken in different regions of the world: from Colombia and Burkina Faso to Iraq and Ukraine. The images show the various activities of Mine Action: from victim assistance and the clearance of mines and other explosives to risk education. All of these activities are essential to ensure that people can live in safe conditions and that mine-affected countries can recover economically and socially. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the City Council of The Hague This link opens in a new tab and is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs This link opens in a new tab. \n\n\n\nAll people depicted in the photos have given explicit permission for the use of these photos. For photos of children\, explicit permission was requested and granted from a parent/guardian. \n\n\n\n\nRegister and read more

SUMMARY:Cities and their global networks - reshaping global governance and international law?
DESCRIPTION:The T.M.C. Asser Instituut cordially invites you to attend our dialogue and panel discussion to celebrate the publication of the ground-breaking Research Handbook on International Law and Cities\, by editors Helmut Aust (Freie Universität Berlin) and Janne E. Nijman (Asser Institute). During the event\, mayor of The Hague Jan van Zanen will receive the first hard copy. A panel of city network experts and international law scholars will discuss the Research handbook’s seminal findings\, followed by a Q & A and a reception. \n\n\n\nToday\, 54 per cent of the world’s population live in cities and towns\, and that number is growing every day. Cities and their networks aim to reshape international life\, for example by being at the table of climate change negotiations – including the upcoming climate change conference COP 26 in Glasgow – or by turning to the United Nations for support for their housing policies and attempts to protect life in cities against the aberrations of the global economy. \n\n\n\nThe role of cities in international law and governance is changing as well. Globalisation and urbanisation have affected cities and their relationship to the international. Within the context of the United Nations\, for instance\, the New Urban Agenda was adopted in 2016 in Quito\, pursuant to the Sustainable Development Goal 11\, which stipulates the ambition of the international community to ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable’. While the international has ‘turned urban’\, cities turned global. \n\n\n\nDuring an early evening event on November 17\, we will discuss these developments first with the Mayor of the City of Peace and Justice\, Mr Jan van Zanen. Mr Van Zanen has been active in transnational city networks in various functions and can reflect on these developments from first-hand experience. The discussion will then continue with a panel of experts who will shed light on the role of cities and their networks from various angles. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nPreliminary programme \n\n\n\n18.00 – Food for thought – appetizers & drinks \n\n\n\n18.45 – Welcome by Prof. Janne E. NijmanConversation with Mr Jan van Zanen\, Mayor of the City of Peace and Justice The Hague \n\n\n\n19.15 – Panel discussion (Moderator: Prof. Helmut Aust\, Freie Universität\, Berlin) \n\n\n\nDr Marlène Siméon\, Director of Operations\, Policy & Advocacy of The Council of European Municipalities and Regions in Brussels – CEMR is the oldest and broadest European association of local and regional governments. \n\n\n\nProf. André Nollkaemper\, Professor of International Law\, University of Amsterdam\, and the Dean of the Amsterdam Law School.Q&A \n\n\n\n20.15 – Concluding remarks by Janne Nijman and Helmut AustReception

SUMMARY:Jobtech for Youth Employment in the Middle East - An ecosystem approach
DESCRIPTION:As a global humanitarian organization\, Mercy Corps ventures beyond emergency aid to explore different areas of sustainable development\, including youth employment\, a critical and massive challenge that requires integrated approaches from a variety of stakeholders and investment from public and private sectors to shift the way we skill\, employ\, and empower youth in the global economy Jobtech is a key contributor to addressing this challenge. \n\n\n\nWe believe that Jobtech completes the formula between the push of labour supply\, and the pull of labour demand\, and presents unique scalable and sustainable solutions to how youth access income generation opportunities\, and how employers seek the best candidates they need with a high rate of success and efficiency. However\, Jobtech has yet to truly catalyse positive breakthrough solutions\, therefore\, it is essential to investigate and discuss the challenges that prevents Jobtech from reaching its full potential in the Middle East. \n\n\n\nUsing Lebanon\, Palestine\, Egypt and Jordan as the main case studies\, speakers representing both the technology\, the youth employment worlds\, and coming from policy making\, investors\, start ups\, research\, private sector\, programming and practitioner backgrounds will use the session to reach several outcomes. \n\n\n\n\nRegister
