DESCRIPTION:The International Nuremberg Principles Academy\, in co-operation with the Centre for International Law Research and Policy (CILRAP)\, is co-organizing an international expert conference on ”Integrity in International Justice” in the Peace Palace in The Hague\, the Netherlands\, on 1-2 December 2018. \nThe twenty years that have passed since the adoption of the Statute of the International Criminal Court in 1998 have seen several changes in international relations\, including increased scrutiny of the operation of international courts. There is concern that multilateralism is under growing pressure. However uncomfortable at times\, this environment of increased scrutiny provides a welcome opportunity to revisit the role of the individual in international justice institutions. Focusing on the standard and practice of “integrity” or “high moral character” is an open-ended necessity for international justice institutions facing the common challenge of professionalization. \nThe conference considers “integrity” in international justice from several angles\, including the following four: \n\nWhat could States Parties do better to uphold the “integrity” requirement\, including in election or appointment of high officials and oversight?\nWhich effective institutional measures are available to the international courts to give proper effect to the “integrity” standard?\nHow can individuals in international justice institutions increase their awareness of “integrity” and make it an active part of their professionalization?\nHow do the principles of “integrity” and independence relate to each other in international justice?\n\nConfirmed speakers include: Payam Akhavan\, Olympia Bekou\, Morten Bergsmo\, Emiliano J. Biographies of radicalization\nA film by Voice4Thought\n(Sjoerd Sijsma\, Mirjam de Bruijn\, Boukary Sangaré\, Souleymane Adoum) \nIn this film we follow two researchers who\, on their turn\, follow people who live(d) through long periods of violence\, conflict and hardship in Chad and Mali. The stories they encounter are stories of lost hopes\, of feelings of being misunderstood\, and of radicalization in multiple ways. The two stories of the researchers show how working on such stories also influences their positions\, and finally radicalizes their positions. \nThis film tells the story of the process of radicalization. However\, it is mostly a reflection on this process\, and how it is an almost inevitable outcome of an unjust world. It raises questions such as: Is it possible to keep distance from the stories when you study them? How do you reflect on the suffering you see? And how does this  influence their work and the decisions they take? That’s why our mission is: by 2030\, 150 million people will be able to prevent or resolve their most pressing justice problems. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 16.3: equal access to justice for all. Unfortunately\, the world is seriously underperforming on SDG 16. \nWe are looking for collaboration. Peace\, justice and sustainable development are intrinsically linked. We realize we cannot change the world by ourselves\, we need to work together. We see the potential of and demand for cooperation. What (perhaps unexpected) partnerships could help us to reach our goal?
