DESCRIPTION:The first and foremost goal of humanitarian aid is to save lives. But what if humanitarian action unintentionally lengthens the duration or becomes part of a conflict? During this second edition of Hot Humanitarian Topics\, we discuss the unintended consequences of humanitarian aid during the conflict in South-Sudan and other African countries with the South Sudanese scientist Jok Madut Jok. \nDuring this edition of Humanitarian Hot Topics\, Jok Madut Jok\, the executive director of the South Sudanese think tank Sudd Institute\, will give an introduction addressing the unintended consequences of humanitarian aid in South Sudan and other African countries. His keynote speech is followed by a discussion between him and speakers from the humanitarian sector. \n\nOther Speakers\n\n\n\nTon Huijzer will give an introduction to the issue from a humanitarian perspective.\nOther speakers will be announced shortly.\n\n\nAbout the series ‘Humanitarian Hot Topics’\n\n\nKUNO & Humanity House organise the series ‘Humanitarian Hot Topics’. For each edition they invite a speaker with an outspoken vision on much discussed hot topics within the humanitarian sector\, such as migration\, #metoo and localisation. After a short plea\, the speaker will go into dialogue with the speakers from the humanitarian sectors and the audience. We engage with communities in crisis areas the same way they connect with their friends and families using apps like Facebook Messenger\, WhatsApp and Upinion Messenger. DESCRIPTION:This HagueTalks will focus on the opportunities that media provide for human rights and freedom of expression. Three speakers from Nigeria\, Kuwait and Turkey share in a personal talk how they use and transform media to create a dialogue on human right issues in their own countries. \nStories and news are more accessible than ever to people all around the world. Social media can provide a platform for human rights activists and underrepresented in society such as women and LGBT. But how is media really changing the work of human rights activists? How can it be used for the benefit of human rights and freedom of expression? And what are the risks? \nThree speakers from Nigeria\, Kuwait and Turkey will give a short\, personal talk and have a discussion with each other and the audience on how media can be used and supported for the benefit of human rights and freedom of expression. \nJoin the conversation and share your own insights! \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n\nEngin Onder is from Turkey. He is the co-founder of 140journos\, Turkey’s trending new media publisher. He was named as “the Man Transforming Journalism in Turkey” in TIME Magazine’s “Next Generation Leaders” series in 2015. He has been in a constant effort to understand\, analyze and tell about Turkey since 2012.\nUmmi Bukar (Nigeria). As a gender rights activist\, Ummi Bukar specializes in media for development. She strongly believes in providing a platform for direct voices\, especially for the underrepresented in the society\, women in particular. Among others\, she has made a documentary highlighting the role of women in peace and security\, and how conflict has changed gender roles in a conservative Muslim society.\nAtyab Al-Shatti (Kuwait). Atyab Al-Shatti is a lawyer\, author and a journalist for Kuwait Times Newspaper. Atyab is currently combining working as the Deputy Secretary General of the Kuwait Society for Human Rights with practicing law at Al Adwani law firm. As a human rights activist she focuses mainly on the human rights situation in the gulf region\, with a particular interest in studies regarding gaps and shortfalls in national laws compared to the international conventions Kuwait has signed regarding human rights. Besides her work as a lawyer\, Atyab published two novels and writes for the legal segment of the Arab Times newspaper.\n\nThe talk will be moderated by Nana Akosua Hanson. She is a cultural producer in Ghana who organizes artistic events and public conversations that covers a range of social justice topics. \nThe event will be co-hosted by Humanity House\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and RVO. Since its founding\, Judge Buergenthal has been committed to the Nuremberg Academy. The film also shows the work of the Nuremberg Academy in dealing with crimes against humanity and supporting the fight against impunity for international crimes in our times. \nThomas Buergenthal’s life is exemplary in many ways. Surviving the Holocaust at the age of eleven\, he witnessed the aftermath of the war in Germany and emigrated to the U.S.\, where he made a model career in international law. As a professor\, he was one of the first to establish the field of International Human Rights Law. In addition\, he served as a judge on many international courts\, including the International Court of Justice\, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights\, the United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador and the U.N. There is concern that multilateralism is under growing pressure. However uncomfortable at times\, this environment of increased scrutiny provides a welcome opportunity to revisit the role of the individual in international justice institutions. Biographies of radicalization\nA film by Voice4Thought\n(Sjoerd Sijsma\, Mirjam de Bruijn\, Boukary Sangaré\, Souleymane Adoum) \nIn this film we follow two researchers who\, on their turn\, follow people who live(d) through long periods of violence\, conflict and hardship in Chad and Mali. The stories they encounter are stories of lost hopes\, of feelings of being misunderstood\, and of radicalization in multiple ways. The two stories of the researchers show how working on such stories also influences their positions\, and finally radicalizes their positions. \nThis film tells the story of the process of radicalization. However\, it is mostly a reflection on this process\, and how it is an almost inevitable outcome of an unjust world. It raises questions such as: Is it possible to keep distance from the stories when you study them? How do you reflect on the suffering you see? And how does this  influence their work and the decisions they take? Every year\, 1 billion people around the world have a justice problem. 70% of these problems are never resolved. That’s why our mission is: by 2030\, 150 million people will be able to prevent or resolve their most pressing justice problems. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 16.3: equal access to justice for all. Unfortunately\, the world is seriously underperforming on SDG 16. \nWe are looking for collaboration. Peace\, justice and sustainable development are intrinsically linked. We realize we cannot change the world by ourselves\, we need to work together. We see the potential of and demand for cooperation. What (perhaps unexpected) partnerships could help us to reach our goal? And what can we offer to help others to reach theirs?  \nWhat is the aim of this session? We want to discover potential partners in the Hub community.
