SUMMARY:NWO Matchmaking Meeting - Responsible Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Designing for public values in a digital world \nNew technological developments such as Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, Internet of Things\, Big Data\, and Blockchain can solve problems and help realise shared values and ideals. At the same time\, other public values are at stake\, such as privacy\, security\, and democracy. How can these values be taken into account in a transparent and responsible way in designing and implementing new systems\, applications\, models and protocols? What solutions are there for fundamental conflicts of values in the digital society? \nTo answer this question\, NWO (The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) opened a new research programme in unique collaboration with The Hague Municipal Council\, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, the Ministry of Defence\, and the Ministry of Justice and Security: ‘Responsible Innovation. Designing for public values in a digital world’. This research programme is part of the larger NWO-programme Responsible Innovation (MVI)\, in which research is carried out into the societal and ethical aspects of new technologies. \nApplications for funding relate to one of the following four innovative themes: \n• New digital technology in the modern rule of law \n• Privacy and human rights in new digital networks \n• Big Data science for a democratic public space \n• Complexity as a consequence of hyper-connectivity for public and private actors \nRoom for four new research projects\, in collaboration with private organisations  \nThe budget of this new programme is over three million euro. This means that four research project can start with a maximum budget of 750.000 euro. Private parties can join a project by (jointly) contributing at least 10% of the total costs of the project (in kind and/or in cash). By investing in the project\, companies and other parties have the opportunity to be the first to make use of the newest insights. DESCRIPTION:China and America and world leaders in AI and technology investment\, plugging several billion euros every year. Similarly\, the United Nations pays a lot of attention to a worldwide responsible AI Strategy and here in Europe\, there is a commitment to a strategy based on a ‘human centric’ approach. The Netherlands is also attempting to place its own stamp on the use of AI through a sectoral approach and the formation of an AI research ecosystem. With the AINED initiative\, the Netherlands has already taken the first steps that are now being built upon. \nYet many questions remain; how can the opportunities offered by AI be used optimally worldwide to tackle social issues\, if at the same time outcomes of the cultural\, social and political impact of artificial technologies are still hotly contested? Is the answer at the national level\, should governments and corporates guarantee social norms\, values and human rights\, both in terms of policy and in the application of AI? Do we need to think differently about fundamental rights such as “equal treatment” in the Digital Age? What do cultural or interpretational differences in terms such as ‘transparency’ and ‘interpretability’ mean when AI makes decisions about the legislation that applies to citizens\, such as whether or not to grant benefits via an algorithm? DESCRIPTION:Peace Innovation Lab’s co-director Mark Nelson is giving a talk on data normalization & The Hague Peace Data Standard on the 27th March. \nFormer relief-worker\, investment banker\, and social entrepreneur\, Mark Nelson founded and co-directs Stanford Peace Innovation Lab\, where he researches mass collaboration and mass interpersonal persuasion. Mark focuses on designing\, catalyzing\, incentivizing\, and generating resources to scale up collective positive human behavior change. He has described a functional\, quantitative definition of peace\, in terms of technology-mediated engagement episode quantity and quality across social difference lines; he has identified innovative\, automated ways to measure peace\, both at the neighborhood and global level; and he has developed a formal structural description for Peace Data. He leads the Global OPEN Social Sensor Array project\, and designs technology interventions to measurably increase positive\, mutually beneficial engagement across conflict boundaries. Mark’s mission is to create an entire new\, profitable industry\, where positive peace is delivered as a service. Other projects include EPIC Global Challenge and Peace Markets. DESCRIPTION:Would you like to contribute to the development of talent for international peace\, justice and humanitarian action? \nWould you like to support the development of The Hague as a centre which offers opportunities for building the work skills and/or applied research capacity of students in the fields of humanitarian aid and international peace and justice? \nIn partnership with the founder of this idea\, Tobias Schmitz from GIWEH\, we are exploring the idea of creating an “internship helpdesk”; a mechanism for interns that will match the needs of knowledge institutions and Humanity Hub members. The helpdesk would help to optimise opportunities for employers to access research or practical support from students. Knowledge institutions gain access to a large network where students can learn work skills\, gain work experience and practical experience in the workforce to enhance their skills and network. \nWe’ll be hosting an exploratory conversation to develop a coalition of parties who could take this idea to the next step. Guests will view one of three films presented by Movies That Matter. After viewing the films\, a dinner will be served at 18:30 as part of the evening’s festivities. The Ideation Session – a discussion and brainstorm between participants – will take place after dinner which participants have the opportunity to ask questions to the human rights defenders and explore the complexities of these challenges beyond the films. \nIn this brief but intense brainstorming session\, we hope that conversations between participants will spark new understandings of the human rights issue and potential tech-solutions will emerge as a result. We believe that this format of problem-solving creates networks and ideas that live on long after the event itself. DESCRIPTION:Leiden Socio-Legal Series Lecture \n\n\n\n\nThis paper discusses the varieties of hybridization of dispute resolution processes from “purer” forms of negotiation\, mediation\, arbitration and adjudication\, and surveys how these processes have now been combined and hybridized to form such processes as “med-arb”\, “arb-med”\,  ombuds\, online dispute resolution (ODR)\, and other forms of dispute resolution and decision making. DESCRIPTION:The concept of vulnerability has been a key concept in studies of disasters and climate change. Vulnerability brings out the socially produced ways in which groups are rendered safe or unsafe in view of hazards. The concept has been a radical move in disaster studies as it took the natural out of natural disasters\, and in focusing on issues like power and inequality as factors that turn the occurrence of a hazard into a disaster. \nToday\, the concept of vulnerability has partly been overtaken by resilience. Increasingly\, people (even disadvantaged people) have begun to be considered as resilient\, with the capacities to organise\, resist\, learn\, change and adapt. Adaptation has become the slogan and the proposed solution to the problem of adjusting human systems to actual or expected climatic stimuli. \nThe roundtable will discuss whether\, and if so\, how vulnerability still matters? Does resilience indeed help to focus disaster response on communities? The UN reports human traffickers earn more than $150 Billion every year from enslaving people. \nIn order to shine a light and combat this crime\, the CNN Freedom Project was launched in 2011. Through this initiative\, reporters\, NGOs and advocates have traveled the world to raise awareness and untangle the criminal enterprises trading in human life. \nCrime Stoppers International are aiming to gather as many people working at the Hub to pledge our voices to fight human trafficking!
