DESCRIPTION:Expert Simona Trpovska\, will be sharing her insights into the available funding provided by the EU under Horizon 2020.  \nThis workshop serves to familiarise you with the available sources of funding in the Horizon 2020 program and its successor\, Horizon Europe. Horizon 2020 is the 8th EU framework programme for research and innovation. The Horizon 2020 programme runs from 2014–2020 and provides an estimated €77 billion euros of funding. The programme has three main priorities\, that are called “pillars“\, 1) Excellent science\, 2) Industrial Leadership and 3) the Societal Challenges\, each with a set of specific objectives.  \n  \nThe workshop consists of two main parts:   \n  \n The first part is a short introduction of Horizon 2020 on:  \n\nThe Horizon 2020 structure and budget  \nThe background of the work programmes and different types of action  \nThe eligibility criteria and the opened calls \n\n  \nThe second part consists of focused discussion about your potential projects and provides answers to the following questions:  \n\nWhich calls are suitable for your project? \nWhat type of partners can join you in the application? \nHow to apply?  \nHow to implement the project if granted? \n\n  \nOverall\, the workshop will provide you with a clear path on how to get closer to the suitable financing for your innovative idea.  \n  \nThe speaker\, Miss Simona Trpovska is a founder and a CEO of a I-DS Coaching & Consulting. SUMMARY:A conversation: ‘Will crisis reporting survive?'
DESCRIPTION:There is a growing and disturbing gap in the provision of quality information about serious humanitarian crises. At a time of deep polarization\, fake news\, and serious global challenges like migration\, climate change and the war in Syria\, independent\, quality journalism is needed to make sense of a complex world. Yet the media industry is in crisis. What consequences does this have for how people and policy makers think and act upon humanitarian topics? You are cordially invited to join this debate on humanitarian crisis reporting! \nReporting about international issues has declined steadily in recent decades. A recent study from the Humanitarian Journalism Project found mainstream coverage of humanitarian crisis to be ‘selective\, sporadic\, simplistic and partial’. There is hardly funding to do thorough investigative reporting\, giving space to the complexity on the ground. To ensures coverage of humanitarian crises\, NGOs and journalists often become more dependent on each other\, which raises risks around the independence of the journalism. \nJoin this debate with Heba Aly\, Director of The New Humanitarian\, on the ethics and viability of crisis reporting in a divided world\, and how to support independent responsible journalism about some of the most critical issues of our time! \nThe evening will start with a keynote speech from Heba Aly\, followed by a panel discussion with Dutch journalists\, funders and aid workers. Tickets are available on the website of Humanity House! \nSpeakers \n>  Heba Aly runs The New Humanitarian (formerly IRIN News)\, an independent\, non-profit newsroom reporting from the heart of conflicts and disasters. SUMMARY:Seminar: 25 years after the Rwandan Genocide
DESCRIPTION:In less than a hundred days\, more than 800\,000 Rwandese people were murdered in a deliberate and well-organized act of genocide\, orchestrated by then-members of the Rwandan government.\nThe genocidal regime targeted the Tutsi population and moderate Hutu who opposed the killings. Many Hutu and Twa also lost their lives as the genocide unfolded in the context of a civil war between the Hutu-dominated government and a Tutsi-dominated rebel movement\, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). \nThe killings started on the 6th of April\, following a rocket attack that caused a plane carrying the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi to crash. Despite the presence of a considerable UN peacekeeping force at the outbreak of the violence\, the international community failed to intervene\, pulling most of their forces out and ignoring any pleas for help. This failure to act allowed the killings to continue until the 4th of July\, when Rwandan Patriotic Front forces\, then led by the current president Paul Kagame\, were able to take control of the country\, ousting those responsible for the genocide from the country. \nHow did the Rwandan Genocide come to be and why did it happen? Could it have been prevented if the international community had done more? If so\, how does humanity as a whole prevent such events from happening in the future? SUMMARY:Digitalisation & International Cooperation  – Risks and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:New technologies provide great opportunities for development cooperation: accelerating change\, improving results and stimulating innovation. The ICRC gathered a large amount of international development and humanitarian NGO’s in London in December in order to reflect on the consequences of digitalisation. Topics included protecting civilians in the digital age\, opportunities for digital transformation & innovation\, weaponization of information and digital risks in armed conflict – a broad agenda that led to the realisation that collective norms on digital do-no-harm & digital opportunities are necessary. Through the conference they put together a report on the matter\, asking the key questions; \nHow can we promote digital do-no-harm?  And stimulate responsible innovation?  \nThe debate will present the findings of the report\, raise awareness and kickstart a reflection with the panel and you. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently working on a Digitalisation and Development Cooperation policy\, NGO’s are actively exploring new grounds; the ICRC report is extremely timely. \nDelphine van Solinge\, Adviser on Digital Risks for Populations at the ICRC will inform us about the challenges posed to humanitarian actors and conflict management in the digital era\, as well as ways forward to tackle them.
