DESCRIPTION:The Hague Humanity Hub and Search for Common Ground cordially invite you to a Masterclass on the Basic Principles of Social Entrepreneurship with John Marks. The Masterclass will be held at the Hague Humanity Hub\, Fluwelen Burgwal 58\, The Hague on June 26\, 2019 from 16:00 to 19:00 \nJohn Marks is a social entrepreneur who founded Search for Common Ground and headed it for 32 years. Together with Susan Collin Marks\, his wife and SFCG’s former Executive VP\, he started at zero and built it into the largest peacebuilding NGO in the world with 600 staff members and offices in 35 countries. SFCG was nominated for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. \nJohn will lead an interactive Masterclass in which he describes the basic operating principles that he has found underlie successful social entrepreneurship. He will provide a practical framework for the next generation of social entrepreneurs\, starting from vision and moving into effective action. The ideas presented will draw from John’s extensive experience\, as well as from the wisdom of participants. On June 25 we focus on the core of the innovation process: \nInnovation has become an imperative for the development sector\, but how do we produce a steady flow of well-designed solutions? This is a very hard to reach goal when clear parameters for successful innovation are lacking. \nThe usual approach to fulfil the need for well-designed solutions is to engage in lots of experimentation – often involving great risks and a success rate that is unpredictable. So how does innovation effectively address a problem\, evidence its impact\, and has the potential to be scaled? \nLearning from the outcomes of the Humanitarian Action Challenge\, an innovative challenge connecting Businesses and NGOs\,  Thomas Baar (Centre for Innovation\, Leiden University)\, with the facilitative help of experienced social innovator Mariken Gaanderse\, will focus on common challenges in innovation during this session. SUMMARY:Civic Space Conference: Building new partnerships across civil society
DESCRIPTION:A program prepared by members of the  Civic Space Platform\, with a contribution by Marriët Schuurman\, the Human Rights Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.\nWith civic space worldwide under growing pressure and populism on the rise\, civil society organisations increasingly need to be creative in finding ways to act and build just\, peaceful and resilient societies. We need to build bridges and partnerships across civil society\, also with those that we normally don’t work with\, and together bring a story of hope and change. \nAs civil society actors\, we need to have an unbiased and open mind to recognize new and unexpected allies and the capacity to critically examine opponents. There is a rise of unconstructive or anti-rights civil society actors\, who contribute to exclusion\, racism\, gender stigmatization and xenophobia. But there are also unexpected allies; organizations\, groups and/or communities who are also affected by the shrinking civic space. Who are the allies within civil society that we neglect? Are we always able to distinguish between ‘the good\, the bad and the ugly’ in civil society?  How to deal with the un-civic part of civil society? What strategies do we need to identify and engage unusual allies? What are effective strategies to counter our opponents within local civil society? \nThis learning event will focus attention on: \n\nRecognizing our own blind spots.\nStrategies to identify and engage new allies\nBuilding partnerships across civil society to defend and strengthen civic space\nStrategies to deal with the un-civic part of civil society\n\nMarriët Schuurman\, The Human Rights Ambassador\, will focus on the urgency of joining forces in the defence of civic space and of a joint narrative on the importance of civic space for a vital society and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.\nWe will have presentations on the need to engage faith-based organisations and independent media as new allies\, followed by working group sessions discussing new partnerships\, involving also trade unions\, political parties\, young entrepreneurs and artists. \nThis learning event is inspired by: \n\nthe work of the Civic Engagement Alliance (CEA)\, one of the Strategic Partners in Dialogue and Dissent. DESCRIPTION:The Justice for Women Report\, released in March 2019 by the High-level Group on Justice for Women\, identifies the main barriers to women’s rights and gender equality both globally and in the Netherlands. Including intimate partner violence\, discrimination at work\, gaps in legal identity and exclusion from decision making\, to name a few. \nWe invite you to discuss the applicability of this report´s recommendations on policies in the Netherlands and abroad\, together with policy makers and civil society representatives working in and on the Justice and Security sector. The following session will take place on July 2\, and more will follow after the summer!\nAs concluded after February’s session on “How to raise sustainable income streams: the importance of non-profit business” and the first meeting of this CoP in April\, in the upcoming months The Spindle will organise a number of sessions on how different organisations are working with innovative ways of financing development. Each session will touch upon on one or two innovative financing instruments that are currently being explored\, experimented or implemented. The main goal of these meetings is to exchange on the topic and discuss experiences\, success stories\, pitfalls and recommendations regarding each financing instrument. While the sessions’ setting is confidential\, the main insights and lessons learnt will also be shared through a blog series produced by Han Valk Fundraising Consultancy & Interim Management. \nThe session of June 18 will focus on social franchising and cash transfers. Social franchising is the application of commercial franchising to organisations that pursue social missions rather than profit. In this model\, the NGO – or\, in some cases\, a social enterprise – creates a network of independent operators (I.e. local organisations) that offer the same services according to a common framework developed by the franchisor. Aflatoun is currently implementing this model within their international network\, so they will contribute to the session by sharing their experiences with it. \nCash transfers are direct transfer payments of money to people\, mostly in cases of humanitarian emergency but sometimes also within more general development programmes. Yet the media industry is in crisis. What consequences does this have for how people and policy makers think and act upon humanitarian topics? You are cordially invited to join this debate on humanitarian crisis reporting! \nReporting about international issues has declined steadily in recent decades. A recent study from the Humanitarian Journalism Project found mainstream coverage of humanitarian crisis to be ‘selective\, sporadic\, simplistic and partial’. There is hardly funding to do thorough investigative reporting\, giving space to the complexity on the ground.
