DESCRIPTION:What if you could make great contributions to society\, within governments\, developing countries\, and crisis situations\, but still have the prestige\, pay and promising career options that come with a professional engineering degree?\n\n\n\nThe same way you can get a degree in Aeronautical\, Civil or Electrical Engineering\, imagine if you could build a career in Peace Engineering.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2017\, The World Engineering Education Forum\, the Global Engineering Deans Council\, and the International Federation of Engineering decided this needed to become the new reality. The next year\, they hosted the first-ever Peace Engineering Conference\, where Drexel University\, the University of Colorado-Boulder\, the Peace Innovation Lab at Stanford\, the University of New Mexico\, and SensorComm Technologies\, were tasked to form the Peace Engineering Consortium. \n\n\n\nTheir mission? To apply science and engineering principles\, and trans-disciplinary systems-level thinking\, to establish rigorous design principles and processes that directly promote and support conditions for peace\, while ensuring the safe and ethical deployment of emerging technologies. \n\n\n\nDuring the week of August 19\, 2019\, the Peace Innovation Institute will convene Consortium members\, and a select group of top practitioners and researchers from around the world\, for the first Peace Engineering Summer Institute. Hosted by our colleagues from TU Delft and The Hague Humanity Hub\, we will lay the foundations of a Peace Engineering degree program that partner universities will be able to offer to their students. \n\n\n\nOn the morning of Friday August the 23rd\, you are invited to attend the final session of the first Peace Engineering Summer Institute. Their role is to coordinate the joint response and shared activities between partners at field level. As an example of international consortia aiming to work more closely with and through local partners\, the Field Coordinators are coming up against challenges around southern leadership on a daily basis. However\, achieving this in practice has proved remarkably difficult. What is new in the latest round of ‘linking’ thinking and has it a greater chance of success than previous efforts?\n\nThe Humanitarian – Development Nexus is high on the agenda. Again. Discussions about the Nexus lead to strong disputes within the humanitarian sector. Some humanitarian professionals argue they have been working with the Nexus for decades and that we just all should start working on it. Other humanitarian professionals\, confronted with the Nexus debate\, underline the differences between humanitarian action and development work\, and stress the humanitarian principles. All argue the Nexus has been discussed for decades\, but did not bring the desired results. \n• What can we learn from the discussions of the past decades?\n• Is the current context different?\n• What are useful ways forward?\n• And what is needed for this? \nKUNO asked researcher Joanna Macrae to take stock of the ongoing debate and to look forward. SUMMARY:Dialogue and dissent: Looking at the role of civil society in achieving SDG 6 by 2030
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Netherlands published its policy note ‘Dialogue and Dissent’ to give shape to a series of new Strategic Partnerships for ‘lobby and advocacy’. The key premise behind this is that civil society plays a crucial role in achieving the sustainable development agenda and standing up for social\, environmental\, economic and human rights. They are the ones who articulate their rights and needs; the ones who need to hold government and other actors to account; and lobby and advocate for changes in policies\, legislation and funding. But\, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) often cannot fulfil their role. \nAs part of the Dialogue and Dissent programmes\, 25 (consortia of) CSOs were selected as strategic partners in the area of lobby and advocacy for the period 2016-2020. This includes a number of partnerships around the broad theme of water\, including Watershed (focusing on strengthening water and sanitation governance); Voice for Change Partnership (focusing on several sectors including WASH) and Partners for Resilience (focusing on resilience amongst others in water resources management). \nThe key rationale behind these three partnerships is the recognition that the world faces a water crisis\, in which still too many people lack access to safely managed water supplies and sanitation facilities\, where people are facing increasing levels of water scarcity or are threatened by flooding. \nTo address this water crisis\, CSOs play a number of crucial roles such as: \n1. Claiming the human rights to water and to sanitation\n2. Holding government to account for their role as duty bearers in WASH service delivery and water resources management\n3. DESCRIPTION:De aanvankelijke euforie over de democratisering van informatie en onderlinge verbondenheid is omgeslagen in een ander beeld: het internet vormt een bedreiging voor de democratie\, het fragmenteert de samenleving en een beperkt aantal digitale platforms ontleent ongekende macht en waarde aan de exploitatie van data afkomstig van individuele burgers. Hoe nu verder? Welke opties zijn er? Welke infrastructuur missen we om onze rechten uit de AVG en PSD2 ook daadwerkelijk uit te kunnen oefenen? In dit mini-symposium wordt de context geschetst\, worden kernvragen aan de orde gesteld en komen oplossingsrichtingen aan bod. \nLinda Kool\nSenior-researcher van het Rathenau Instituut\, thema-leider van Digitale Samenleving\nLinda belicht de maatschappelijke en ethische kant. Wat betekenen deze technologieën voor onze autonomie\, privacy en veiligheid en ongelijke machtsverhoudingen? Welke spelregels zijn van belang? \nWouter van Noort\nRedacteur economie en technologie voor NRC Handelsblad en commentator EenVandaag\nWouter schrijft met name over technologie. In zijn boek ‘Is daar iemand?’ deed hij uit de doeken hoe fabrikanten ons verslaafd maken aan de smartphone. Een – geleende – uitspraak van hem: ‘first we shape our tools\, thereafter our tools shape us’. \nDouwe Lycklama à Nijeholt\nMede-oprichter van adviesbureau Innopay en mede-auteur van het boek ‘Alles Transactie’\nDouwe Lycklama is founding partner van Innopay\, een internationale adviespraktijk voor bedrijven en overheid gespecialiseerd in digitale transacties\, data\, betalen en identiteit. Zijn recente boek over platformaties en transactioneel internet\, ‘Alles transactie’\, is recent tot Managementboek van 2019 uitgeroepen. \nDe Tweede Kamerleden Jan Middendorp (informatiesamenleving\, identiteit) en Martin Wörsdörfer (digitalisering\, mededinging) zullen reflecteren op het onderwerp. Jan Middendorp diende recent een initiatiefvoorstel in voor toezicht op AI.
