DESCRIPTION:The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Venezuela has caused more than 4 million refugees to flee the country. This movement has a direct impact on the other countries in our Kingdom\, especially on Bonaire\, Curaçao and Aruba. This crisis touches on the responsibilities and activities of multiple Dutch governments and organizations. Partners from the islands will be present in the Netherlands in September for a round table conversation about the situation with academics and representatives of different ministries and CSOs\, moderated by KUNO. They will share the different context-analyses and activities that are being conducted on the areas of security\, human rights and humanitarian action. \nThis event is invitation only.

DESCRIPTION:Yemen is going through a fifth year of conflict. In the news you do not hear much about the conflict and even less about the Yemeni who strive for reconstruction of their country. During this program\, they share their stories in short\, personal speeches\, so they can provide an important insight into the life that continues in Yemen\, and what the local needs and challenges are.  \nThe conflict in Yemen has created the one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Since the start of the conflict\, four rounds of peace talks have been organized by the United Nations. It has always been said that the input of young people and women in the peace process is important. However\, in practice it appears that the ultimate influence of these groups is minimal\, while this is just as important for sustainable and inclusive peace. \nThe Yemeni who share their stories all work for organizations that work for women and young people in Yemen. You will hear stories about how life continues in Yemen and how they try to involve young people and women in the peace process. The stories provide insights into the initiatives they set up and what the biggest challenges and needs are. SUMMARY:Embassy Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:With nearly seventy participating countries\, the two-day Embassy Festival will be bigger than ever this year. There isn’t an event in the world where so many embassies unite to present and celebrate culture.  \nThanks to the collaborations with the embassies\, the Embassy Festival is able to present an authentic and worldly experience with four stages offering music (classical\, traditional and contemporary) and dance. There’s also an International Market present with many culinary and cultural discoveries to be made. The free festival will take place on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 September at the Lange Voorhout in The Hague.  \nWalking around the Embassy Festival shows visitors how culture unites. An example of what’s to be expected: At the festival you will see stars shine and perform from Palestine (Faraj Suleiman)\, Australia (Anna Smith)\, Morocco (Mâalem Reda Stitou) and Israel (Boom Pam). Ambassadors roll up their sleeves and put on an apron to help prepare delicious meals from their home countries. Women from Bosnia and Herzegovina dancing dressed in traditional clothing. It’s not uncommon to find yourself dancing in a spontaneously organized South-African party and to then be swept away by several other countries that are celebrating their heritage on the International Market. \nYou can taste bites and drinks from all over the world. Cozonaci (Romania)\, Biko (Phillipines)\, Dolma (Azerbaijan)\, Banhm (Vietnam)\, Sirnica (Bosnia & Herzegovina)\, Khachapuri (Georgia) and Kürbiskernöl (Australia) are just some of the delicious treasures that can be tasted and discovered. Our youngest visitors will also be entertained at this family-friendly festival. At the Kids Compound or at one of the many pavilions inhabited by all the countries present. Children will have their own voyage of discovery to experience. By painting Nón Lá’s (Vietnamese conical hats)\, or by taking a picture with Joulupukki (Finland’s very own Santa Claus) or by getting a henna tattoo at the Saudi-Arabia stand. \nFACTS & FIGURES\nLast year\, the Embassy Festival attracted more than 60.000 visitors. The festival brings together the richness of nearly seventy participating countries and seduces its visitors to meet with each other\, to step outside the familiar and to indulge themselves in sea of culture. Ambassadors roll up their sleeves and put on an apron to help prepare delicious meals from their home countries. Women from Bosnia and Herzegovina dancing dressed in traditional clothing. It’s not uncommon to find yourself dancing in a spontaneously organized South-African party and to then be swept away by several other countries that are celebrating their heritage on the International Market. \nYou can taste bites and drinks from all over the world. Cozonaci (Romania)\, Biko (Phillipines)\, Dolma (Azerbaijan)\, Banhm (Vietnam)\, Sirnica (Bosnia & Herzegovina)\, Khachapuri (Georgia) and Kürbiskernöl (Australia) are just some of the delicious treasures that can be tasted and discovered. Our youngest visitors will also be entertained at this family-friendly festival. At the Kids Compound or at one of the many pavilions inhabited by all the countries present. Children will have their own voyage of discovery to experience. What is blended finance exactly\, what is the (business) case behind it and how does that work? Join us on August 29 for yet another informative inspiring meeting of our Community of Practice on Innovative Finance for Development. \n\n\n\nTo follow up on a wish expressed by a number of organisations and interested parties\, in 2019 The Spindle is organising a series of sessions on how different organisations are working with innovative ways of financing development. Each session will touch upon on one or two innovative financing instruments that are currently being explored\, experimented with or implemented. The main goal of these meetings is to exchange on the topic and discuss experiences\, success stories\, pitfalls and recommendations regarding each financing instrument. The session of August 29 will focus on local fundraising and blended finance. \n\n\n\nLocal fundraising – Wilde GanzenHow can local organisations get empowered by learning to raise funds locally and to mobilise other kinds of support? This requires fundamental changes when it comes to the present rules of the ‘development game’. Many Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) and NGOs in the Global South largely depend on foreign funding. Change the Game Academy\, an online and classroom training programme of Wilde Ganzen Foundation\, aims to channel the responsibility to alleviate poverty to where it ultimately belongs: the countries themselves. Accordingly\, it is the local character of this financing instrument which makes the latter innovative. During the session\, Wilde Ganzen will take us on a journey: from challenges to opportunities; from dependency towards local sustainability. \n\n\n\nBlended finance – SolidaridadThe Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development defines blended finance as “the strategic use of development finance for the mobilisation of additional finance towards sustainable development in developing countries.” This additional finance generally comes from the private sector. Accordingly\, blended finance aims at attracting both commercial and private capital towards projects that benefit society while providing financial return to investors. Solidaridad is piloting business cases for the dairy sector in Tanzania via blended finance\, together with Tanga Fresh\, leading dairy producer in Tanzania\, and Mruazi farm\, a commercial livestock management company. DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, The Spindle and the Hague Humanity Hub collaborate in organising a series of (almost) monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In the next months\, we will dedicate three Future Sessions to exploring the future of cities and the significance of urban trends for development and development cooperation. The world is increasingly becoming more urban\, with Africa and Asia being the fastest urbanizing continents. Cities are growing in size\, and by 2030\, there will be 41 cities with more than 10 million inhabitants. During this Future Session Special\, we explore the challenges\, consequences and opportunities for you and your organisation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. \n  \nWhat does the rapid urbanisation worldwide mean for resilience\, inclusion\, employability\, and eventually for the (future) work of NGOs in urban contexts? How can we face the underlying challenges\, and how can the related opportunities be seized? \nIn this first interactive session on cities\, Paula Nagler\, economic researcher at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) based at the Erasmus University Rotterdam\, the Netherlands\, will discuss the topics of urban futures and resilience from an economic lens\, including key aspects of labour markets and entrepreneurship. Behind the current rapid urbanisation lies a combination of pull and push factors\, where employment perspectives play a central role. A critical issue with these trends is the inability of cities to cope with this massive influx of people. Two worrying consequences are the growth of inequalities and the increase in the level of informality in urban areas\, both in terms of employment and of housing. \n  \nAlso\, Anne-Marie Hitipeuw This link opens in a new tab\, working for The Hague on resilience\, will elaborate shortly on the city which is part of the 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) network. 100RC defines urban resilience as “the capacity of individuals\, communities\, institutions\, businesses\, and systems within a city to survive\, adapt\, and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience”. Building urban resilience requires looking at a city holistically: understanding the systems that make up the city and the interdependencies and risks they may face. By strengthening the underlying fabric of a city and better understanding the potential shocks and stresses it may face\, a city can improve its development trajectory and the well-being of its citizens. The next year\, they hosted the first-ever Peace Engineering Conference\, where Drexel University\, the University of Colorado-Boulder\, the Peace Innovation Lab at Stanford\, the University of New Mexico\, and SensorComm Technologies\, were tasked to form the Peace Engineering Consortium. \n\n\n\nTheir mission? However\, the NGO world and the private sector differ significantly and sometimes cannot even understand each other. This makes cooperation between the two challenging. This is why The Spindle commissioned Endeva to write a guide on the topic\, which has recently been published. The writing process involved the collection of various case studies\, as well as extensive feedback from a core group of the Dutch Platform Leave No One Behind. \nThe Guide on NGO and Company Partnerships for Inclusive Business is specifically aimed at NGOs\, but it is undoubtedly relevant for companies too to be able to understand their NGO partners better and be confronted with a mirror of their own experience. The publication is a very practical tool which focuses on the how of inclusive business partnerships and covers the entire process – from the decision to engage in such a partnership to the possibilities of scaling up or moving on. B.
