SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Biodiversity in the City of Peace & Justice
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, share & learn about what different organisations are doing to make the world more peaceful and sustainable at the Community Drinks\n\nWhat if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away? \nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Thrusday\, April 16th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals that think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems and global policies. \nFrom coastal dunes and migratory birds to urban gardens and pollinators\, biodiversity surrounds us—even in the heart of a global city like The Hague! As environmental pressures intensify worldwide\, conversations about how we protect and preserve the natural world are becoming increasingly urgent\, and they belong not only in laboratories and policy rooms but also in our communities. \nThe theme of ”Biodiversity & Preservation” encourages us to think about the interconnectedness of ecosystems\, societies\, and global policy. Biodiversity loss is not only an environmental challenge; it is deeply linked to human rights\, food security\, climate resilience\, and social stability. Protecting ecosystems means protecting communities and futures. \nJoin The April edition of the Community Drinks for a fruitful conversation that may spark collaborations\, inspire new perspectives\, or simply deepen our collective awareness of the living systems that sustain us. \nWe would like to explore some of the following questions through the selected spotlights for the evening: \n\nWhat does biodiversity mean in an urban city like The Hague\, and how can cities become spaces that actively support ecological diversity?\nHow are local ecosystems\, from the North Sea coastline to urban green spaces\, changing\, and what can communities do to help protect them?\nWhat role can residents\, civil society organizations\, and international institutions in The Hague play in preserving biodiversity at both local and global levels?\nHow can urban planning\, architecture\, and public spaces contribute to healthier ecosystems and more biodiversity-friendly cities?\nHow can international policy conversations taking place in The Hague connect more directly to local environmental action?\nAnd finally\, how can we foster a stronger sense of connection between people\, place\, and the natural systems that sustain life in and around our city?\n\nThrough short spotlights and open discussion\, the evening aims to create space for reflection\, inspiration\, and collaboration across disciplines and communities. \nWho are the speakers? \n\nGreenAnt\nGreenAnt is a climate-tech company leveraging satellite data and artificial intelligence to tackle environmental risks. They focus on providing cutting-edge solutions for climate risk management\, disaster response\, and sustainability analysis.\nOne Acre Fund\nOne Acre Fund works with 5.6 million smallholder farmer households to equip them with the supplies and training they need to thrive. They put Farmers First in everything they do\, helping them grow more food\, plant more trees\, and earn more money from their harvests.\nSpace4Good\nSpace4Good is a team of impact-driven data scientists\, remote sensing & GIS experts\, software developers as well as environmental and urban planners using their unique skills and experience for social and environmental impact.\n\nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nPrivacy Policy \nThe Humanity Hub collects your name\, email\, and organization (if you have one) when you sign up for events\, so they can manage the event and tell you about future ones. If you want to receive the Hub newsletter\, or if you have food allergies (for events with food)\, the Hub will collect that too. SUMMARY:Online Brown Bag Lunch Session: Decolonising Peace Direct
DESCRIPTION:On April 27\, from 12:30 to 13:30\, EPLO will host an online Brown Bag Lunch session in collaboration with Peace Direct\, taking place via Zoom. The session will focus on Peace Direct’s learning paper Decolonising Peace Direct and is open to all who are interested in engaging with this topic. \nThe discussion will centre on Peace Direct’s critical reflection on its own motivations and practices in relation to racism\, (de)colonialism\, and (de)coloniality. Through this work\, Peace Direct has sought to openly examine its approach and share the key lessons learned along the way. The resulting paper is intended to support other organisations and individuals in their own decolonisation journeys\, whether they are just beginning or already well along the process. \nBuilding on the insights from the paper\, the session will go beyond presentation to create space for an open and participatory exchange. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences and reflections on decolonising practices within their organisations\, with the aim of learning from one another\, exchanging perspectives\, and collectively deepening understanding of this ongoing work. \nTo take part\, please register via the Zoom link. Once registered\, you will automatically receive the access link and a calendar invitation\, and you are welcome to share the event with colleagues who may be interested. \n	Read the learning paper\n	\n	Register

SUMMARY:How to capture lessons and integrate learning & reflection into ongoing workflows
DESCRIPTION:How do we actually learn while a project is still ongoing? \nMost teams document lessons at the end of a project. By then\, opportunities to adapt have often already passed. \nThis webinar series begins with a story from Abdel-Rahman El-Mahdi who will share firsthand experiences from a civil society study conducted in Sudan. For each session\, collaborators and practitioners who are actively working in these contexts are invited to share how learning is approached\, challenged\, and applied in real time. \nThe first webinar focuses on a central question: How can lessons be captured and integrated into ongoing workflows\, rather than after the fact? \nDrawing on the Sudan case\, this session looks at what it takes to:\n🔎 Continuously reflect and adapt in uncertain and changing contexts\n🔎 Capture insights as they emerge\, not months later\n🔎 Turn experiences into structured knowledge that informs decisions\n🔎 Ensure that learning feeds directly back into the work \nThe session combines:\n💡 A short introduction to the principles behind structured learning\n💡A practitioner story from the field\, including challenges and trade-offs\n💡A joint reflection on what worked\, what did not\, and what can be done differently\n💡A brief look at how tools like Propel support this in practice \n  \n	Register now

SUMMARY:#DemocracyDrinks: Elections\, Legitimacy\, and Protests in Serbia
DESCRIPTION:Can Change Happen Within Distrusted Systems? \nIn many contemporary democracies\, formal institutions continue to function while public trust in them steadily declines. This creates a fundamental tension: if citizens no longer believe in the fairness or effectiveness of elections\, can those same elections still serve as a meaningful mechanism for change? \nThe situation in Serbia illustrates this dilemma vividly\, as waves of student-led protests and broader civic mobilization following the tragedy in Novi Sad raise questions not only about political outcomes\, but about the legitimacy of the processes themselves. \nAt the same time\, this issue resonates beyond national borders\, shaping debates within the European Union\, and in countries like the Netherlands\, about how to support democracy and rule of law in contexts where its core mechanisms are formally present but substantively contested. \nThis #DemocracyDrinks edition is organised in collaboration with The Serbian Diaspora in The Netherlands\, where you will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with serbian students\, the diaspora\, and see a small exhibition from the protests. \nJoin us on April 30th (17:00-19:00) for the #DemocracyDrinks The Hague and engage with \n\nOlga Pantić: She is coordinator of the Marketing Centre at Novi Sad University working on political articulation\, creation of political narrative and campaigns.\nMiloš Janjić: He is a freelance multimedia artist\, dancer and cultural worker from Belgrade. SUMMARY:People Centred Justice as a Early Warning and Prevention Tool
DESCRIPTION:How can justice kickstart real prevention and make a difference together? Join us for this interactive conversation on 6th May!\nAcross the world\, tensions and conflicts often begin with everyday problems that go unanswered—issues like disputes over land\, housing\, family matters\, access to services\, or discrimination. When these problems accumulate\, they can erode trust and deepen social divides long before any violence becomes visible. \nThis interactive session explores how people‑centred justice—justice that is accessible\, fair\, and grounded in people’s daily realities—can help identify and address these early warning signs. By resolving everyday grievances early\, justice systems can help prevent tensions from escalating and strengthen community resilience. \nAlthough the examples will draw from conflict‑affected places such as the DRC\, Ethiopia\, and Nigeria\, the discussion will also highlight why these lessons matter in more stable societies\, including the Netherlands\, where signs of mistrust\, inequality\, and polarisation are increasingly visible. \n📅 Date: 6 May 2026\n🕘 Time: 09:00–10:30\n📍 Venue: The Hague Humanity Hub\n🧃 Doors open at 08:30 for welcome breakfast \nWhy Attend?\nJoin practitioners\, policymakers\, students\, and the wider public for a conversation that asks: \n\nWhat everyday justice problems signal rising tensions?\nWhat kinds of justice responses actually help prevent escalation?\nHow can community-level and formal justice actors work together more effectively?\nWhat can the Netherlands learn from fragile contexts—and what can it offer in return?\n\nMeet the Speakers \n\nClaudine Tsongo – Dynamique des femmes juristes (DRC)\n\nHow unresolved everyday grievances in eastern DRC contribute to wider conflict—and what community‑level justice can do to prevent escalation.\n\n\nMoncef Kartas – Head of UNDP’s Peace Support Facility (Ethiopia)\n\nHow patterns in everyday disputes can serve as early warning signals in places where formal justice systems have collapsed\, and what effective prevention efforts look like in practice.\n\n\n\nMore information about the speakers to be shared soon. \nWho Should Join?\nThis session is open to all: \n\nJustice\, development\, and peacebuilding practitioners\nPolicymakers and diplomats\nStudents and researchers\nAnyone interested in justice\, prevention\, or social cohesion\n\nThis event is a partnership between The Hague Humanity Hub\, UNDP\, Cordaid and the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS) and is one of the official side events of the Justice Matters Conference by the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (Hiil) taking place from the 6th – 8th May 2026. \n	Register here for in-person attendance\n	\n	Register here to attend online

SUMMARY:War on Terror: Legacy\, Justice\, Art: Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference brings together scholars\, practitioners\, journalists\, and artists to examine the enduring legacy of the “war on terror” and its implications for the future. Nearly twenty-five years after its inception\, the War on Terror continues to shape global politics\, law\, and society . The discussion will explore both continuities and transformations in this legacy\, including patterns of militarisation\, dehumanisation\, legal exceptionalism\, and shifting forms of intervention. \nLooking ahead\, the event also considers how international law\, media\, and the arts can respond to these challenges. It creates space for dialogue on the role of artistic expression in advancing justice—particularly in contexts where legal remedies remain limited or contested. \nSet against ongoing global tensions and debates around accountability\, human rights\, and the rule of law\, the conference invites participants to reflect on key questions: What are the strengths and limits of legal frameworks in addressing contemporary conflicts? How do evolving narratives of security shape international law? And what role can creative and media practices play alongside legal efforts in promoting justice? \nThe programme will be followed by the launch of the exhibition Art/Justice by Abu Zubaydah\, presenting works by the Guantánamo detainee and offering a powerful artistic perspective on detention\, accountability\, and the pursuit of justice. \n	Register here

SUMMARY:What Does Peace Mean To You? – a Panel Discussion and Interactive Workshop of Youth Perspectives on Peace
DESCRIPTION:What does peace mean to young people today? How is it experienced\, imagined\, challenged\, or redefined across different contexts and lived realities? \nThis interactive event brings together students\, academics\, and members of The Hague’s NGO community to explore youth perspectives on peace through open dialogue and collective reflection. The aim is to create a space where young people can express their understanding of peace in their own words\, while fostering meaningful exchange between youth and practitioners working in peacebuilding and related fields. \nThe programme will begin with a short mind-mapping exercise\, inviting participants to reflect on their personal associations with peace. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring young speakers from diverse backgrounds\, including individuals with lived experience of conflict and displacement. After the panel\, participants will join smaller group discussions to share reflections\, exchange perspectives\, and engage more deeply with the themes raised throughout the evening. \nThe event will conclude with a final reflection activity\, where participants will revisit the question “What does peace mean to you?” and consider how their understanding may have evolved through dialogue and shared experiences. Insights gathered during the event will later be shared with organisations across The Hague’s NGO community to support more meaningful youth engagement in peacebuilding work. \nSpeakers: \n\nAlla Khuseyn is a Climate and Energy Law master’s student at the University of Groningen and the founder of ROK Magazine\, a Kurdish digital magazine. She is expected to share her perspectives and experiences relating to peace\, resistance\, and culture within the diaspora.\nGregory Fonseca is a Master of Public International Law student at Leiden University. He may speak about his experiences joining the Ukrainian military\, as well as teaching international law to soldiers.\nAhmed Idriss is a Master student at Rotterdam University\, and the co-founder of SudanConnect. He may be sharing his experiences related to the war in Sudan\, and humanitarian efforts.\n\n	Sign up here! This link opens in a new tab
