SUMMARY:Community Drinks: Peace & Justice Beyond the Bubble
DESCRIPTION:What if your next game-changing connection is just a drink away?\nJoin us for Community Drinks to wind down around a glass\, make new connections\, and get inspired by the spotlights of the evening. Hosted at The Hague Humanity Hub\, this is the place for you to get away from your busy schedule and enjoy after-hours with purposeful conversations. \n  \nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Tuesday\, February 17th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals working on making peace and justice more accessible for everyone. \n  \nThe Hague is both the International City of Peace & Justice and a city where neighbourhoods can be socio-economically and culturally divided. While hundreds of institutions work on peace\, justice\, human rights\, and security\, the field can often feel closed-off\, technical\, elite\, or geographically distant from the lived realities of many residents. \nThis edition of Community Drinks takes place right before the municipal elections\, making it a timely moment to reflect on who feels included in the city’s peace and justice ecosystem\, and who does not. \nWho are the speakers?\n\nNetwerk Haagse Helpers\n\nThe Haagse Helpers is a community of volunteers who are building a socially connected city. Young people help fellow citizens\, inspire each other\, and flourish themselves. The Haagse Helpers pay attention to raising awareness among young people to contribute in and to the city. In addition to doing volunteer work\, we have fixed monthly activities\, and we also offer workshops and training to volunteers to strengthen the community’s feelings even more. \n\nLeiden University\n\nLeiden University’s Campus The Hague is the home to teaching and research focused on international law\, governance\, urban issues\, global affairs\, and health—the series brings together academics\, students\, practitioners\, and citizens to explore inclusive approaches to building peaceful societies. Leiden University will be represented by Maja Vodopivec\, Senior University Lecturer at Leiden University College. Drawing on her background in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina\, her PhD research in Tokyo\, and her teaching in peace and conflict studies\, Maja co-founded Fireside Peace Chats to counter increasing securitization in academic discourse and reconnect discussions of peace with lived realities in the world’s capital of peace and justice. \nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. Whatever your role or sector\, join Community Drinks to relax\, exchange perspectives\, and connect with this vibrant community committed to making the world more peaceful\, just and sustainable\, one conversation at a time. \nMore information about the speakers to be shared shortly. \n	Register here! SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night x GHRD: SOLD. A Child Trafficked
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout SOLD\nSOLD. A Child Trafficked\, a powerful 2012 film that sheds light on the realities of child trafficking and exploitation. \nShot mainly in Nepal\, it follows the stories of several survivors of child trafficking who fell victim to sexual slavery in brothels across India. SUMMARY:Why International Law is Failing as a Discipline: Geopolitics\, Legality and the Crisis of Cartographic Vision
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a keynote lecture by Prof. Nikolas Rajkovic (Tilburg University)\, exploring how our traditional way of seeing the world through maps is being strained by an increasingly complex reality of infrastructures and systems\, leaving international law in a ‘perceptual lag’. \nThe territorial trap \nFor decades\, territorial maps promised order. But this ‘cartographic imagination’ is breaking. Prof. Rajkovic warns that international legal discipline is stuck in an outdated mindset that ignores modern reality. \nToday\, the things that truly control our lives do not respect lines on a map. Power is increasingly projected through pixels rather than polygons\, found in:\nData infrastructure and undersea fibre-optic cables.\nSatellite arrays that monitor and manage global movement.\nSanctions systems and supply chains that bypass national borders. \nInvisible governance\nThe main problem is not that international law is disappearing\, but that it is failing to ‘recalibrate’. As governance migrates into technical systems and mobile ‘things’\, it becomes invisible to traditional legal eyes. When lawyers try to solve modern problems\, they often default to old-fashioned ‘map thinking’ instead of confronting how much the world has changed. \nTo restore relevance to international law\, Prof. Rajkovic calls for a new kind of ‘visual literacy’. He will argue that we must stop looking at the world as a static map and start paying attention to the digital and physical infrastructures that now function as boundaries. Without this shift in perspective\, international law may well continue to lose its grip on a reconfigured geopolitical world. \nThis keynote lecture concludes the ‘International Legal Resonance in the Global Attention Economy’ workshop\, which was funded by the KNAW Early Career Partnerships programme from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. \n  \nSpeaker\nProf. dr. Nikolas M. Rajkovic\nChair of International Law\, Tilburg University \n	Register here This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Youth Speak Night
DESCRIPTION:Youth Speak Night (YSN) is an interactive\, dialogue-driven event organized by AIESEC Leiden/The Hague under the NOUR Project. It brings together students\, professionals\, and experts for an evening focused on meaningful exchange and cross-cultural understanding. \nThis edition of YSN centres on the theme “Connecting Cultures\,” aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The evening explores how global cooperation— particularly between the Arab and Western worlds— can be strengthened through dialogue\, knowledge exchange\, and youth engagement. \nYSN brings together professionals\, academics\, and NOUR Project representatives\, ensuring a balanced perspective that combines practical experience\, academic insight\, and on-the-ground youth engagement. Attendees can expect interactive elements\, real-life perspectives\, and the opportunity to ask questions directly to the speakers. Rather than being a one-sided lecture\, YSN is designed as a space for conversation. \nBy the end of the evening\, attendees should walk away with a deeper understanding of how equal\, cross-cultural partnerships are essential for global progress\, how young people can actively contribute to these collaborations\, and how initiatives like the NOUR Project translate dialogue into concrete action. Ultimately\, YSN is a platform where youth are not just listeners but active participants in shaping a more connected world. \n  \nThe Agenda \nThe programme will include an opening\, a keynote that bridges theory and practice\, and a 45 minute moderated panel discussion with professionals. The panel includes academics who will provide broader insights into Arab-Western relations\, professionals working towards intercultural understanding in The Hague\, and NGO representatives who strive for intercultural connection on multiple societal levels. \n	Sign up here! SUMMARY:Fireside Peace Chats: Youth & Peace with Jonathan van Varik
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn this next edition of FPC\, we will discuss the unique perspective and position that youth can and should play in advancing peace from the local to the global level. Our guest speaker for this FPC edition is Jonathan van Varik\, youth worker\, freelance peace-builder\, and the lead coordinator of the 2026 Youth Peace Summit! With Jonathan\, we will discuss how we can  connect youth\, institutions\, organizations\, and governments in dialogue\, innovation\, and inclusion to empower young people worldwide to become active creators of peace. Within that context\, we will explore the contribution of the Youth Peace Summit\, its 2025 Youth Peace Manifesto\, and the summit’s innovative infrastructure for connecting youth peace-builders year-round\, which will be launched at the upcoming 2026 summit! Join us for an informal conversation intended to bring peacebuilders\, enthusiasts\, and citizens together to connect\, share experiences\, and exchange insights on how we can promote resilience within our local communities. \n  \nWhat are the Fireside Peace Chats?\nThe Fireside Peace Chats aim to create a space where practice\, research\, and policy in the field of peacebuilding come together in an informal way through the experiences of people on the ground. By sharing personal stories from peacebuilders and other figures with extensive experience in conflict areas\, we want to contribute to a locally informed paradigm shift in liberal peacebuilding. \nThe Fireside Peace Chats originally emerged as a joint initiative of Leiden University College (LUC)\, the Knowledge Platform for Security and the Rule of Law (KPSRL)\, and The Hague Humanity Hub (THHH). SUMMARY:Community Drinks | Picture Power: How Stories Shape Change
\nWhat can you expect?\nCome to the Hub on Thrusday\, March 19th\, between 17:00 and 19:00\, for a drink (or two) and meet professionals using storytelling to advocate for\, and drive\, positive change. \nIn a city like The Hague\, where dialogue\, justice\, and diplomacy shape the global stage\, visual advocacy and storytelling offer a powerful way to humanize complex issues. Images\, maps\, data visualizations\, and narrative design can make institutional processes more approachable\, bringing clarity to subjects that might otherwise feel abstract or distant. Visual storytelling cuts across language and cultural barriers\, inviting broader participation and fostering empathy in a place where diverse voices meet. \nWhen used thoughtfully\, visual advocacy not only communicates information but also amplifies impact. In The Hague’s ecosystem compelling visuals can illuminate the lived experiences behind legal arguments\, highlight patterns that inform policy decisions\, and energize public engagement. By blending art\, narrative\, and evidence\, visual storytelling helps bridge the gap between global challenges and the people working to address them. \nThe March Edition of the Community Drinks will explore some of the following questions: \n\nIn what ways can visuals help bridge the gap between policy discussions and lived human experiences?\nHow do we represent people and their stories ethically\, especially when dealing with sensitive topics like conflict\, justice\, or human rights?\nHow can visuals avoid oversimplifying or sensationalizing complex issues?\nWhat role can creative storytelling play in sustaining open\, democratic societies?\n\nWho are the speakers? \n\nGregg The Artivist\nGregg is a storyteller and activist using art to cut through noise\, challenge broken systems\, and reconnect us to what matters.\nHuman Rights in The Picture\nHuman Rights in the Picture is a non-profit organisation that advocates for human rights through visual storytelling. The organisation shines a light on human rights violations\, injustices and inequalities through film\, music\, photography and other forms of art\, and gives a voice to victims of human rights violations.\nMovies That Matter\nMTM’s mission is to open eyes to human rights. They use film to stir the debate on human rights\, sustainability and fight against injustice. Film has the unprecedented capacity to raise awareness and provide new insight.\n\nWho is it for?\nIf you are interested in connecting with people and their work towards a more peaceful\, just and sustainable world\, this event is for you. SUMMARY:Non-Violent Communication: Giraffe or Jackal?
DESCRIPTION:Join the workshop and explore a different way of communicating. \nA job interview feels tense. A team discussion turns sensitive. A conversation about values\, diversity or social impact suddenly becomes uncomfortable. \nThis interactive workshop offers a first introduction to Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Rather than promising quick fixes\, this session creates awareness of how language shapes connection – and how small shifts in communication influence the quality of dialogue. \nUsing the metaphor of the “giraffe” and the “jackal”\, you explore the difference between reactive and connecting communication styles. Through guided reflection and short practical exercises\, you practise distinguishing observation from interpretation\, noticing emotional triggers\, and expressing yourself with more clarity. \nThe focus stays on awareness and insight: recognising patterns in yourself and in professional interactions such as interviews\, teamwork\, networking or value-driven conversations. You leave with a clearer understanding of NVC principles and concrete examples of how they apply in daily work situations. \nThe workshop is guided by an experienced NVC trainer who works with professionals in international and multicultural contexts. The session combines brief explanations with interactive exercises in a safe and engaging setting. \nCurious whether you speak more giraffe or jackal? \nJoin the conversation on March 20th (14:00-16:00) and explore a different way of communicating. The workshop is organised by JobOn and The Hague Humanity Hub. \n	Sign up here! This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Localizing humanitarian decision making: MSF’s Field Recentralisation initiative
DESCRIPTION:Rye will present his research into the Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) ‘Field Recentralisation’ initiative\, which aims to decentralize decision making from headquarters in Europe to field offices in Southern African countries. This localization initiative is intended to make MSF’s work more adaptable\, flexible and innovative\, as well as moving decision making closer to affected people. \nIn his longitudinal qualitative case study research\, Rye interviewed various humanitarian practitioners at the field\, regional and HQ levels. His preliminary findings suggest that the Field Recentralisation initiative has\, in some cases\, demonstrated great success in increasing autonomy of the field projects\, improving operational flexibility and strengthening collaboration with local health partners. In other instances\, challenges have emerged from issues with organizational alignment\, preparedness and involvement in the implementation. \nRye’s presentation will be followed by a ‘reflection’ from Delu Lusambya MwenebyakeOpens external  (HSC-ISS) on the challenges of localizing international aid\, drawing on insights from his PhD reserarch into humanitarian accountability. This will be followed by a Q&A.

SUMMARY:Addressing barriers to local actors in NGO security coordination
DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian sector is entering a period of profound transition. As the Humanitarian Reset unfolds\, long-standing questions take on renewed urgency: will this moment advance the ambitions of the Grand Bargain and the Charter for Change\, and can the system move toward greater equity without deepening risks for aid workers\, particularly those from crisis-affected countries? \nThis online session is designed as a discussion rather than a series of presentations\, bringing together diverse perspectives on power\, voice\, and participation in humanitarian coordination. It aims to create a thoughtful and candid exchange on how coordination spaces function in practice\, whose expertise is recognised\, and how these mechanisms can become more inclusive and equitable in times of shrinking budgets and institutional restructuring. \nThe conversation will draw on findings from a recent multi-country research initiative examining persistent disparities between international and local/national NGOs (L/NNGOs) in humanitarian security coordination\, particularly in conflict-affected contexts. The research highlights how limited access to key decision-making spaces can constrain L/NNGOs’ ability to shape humanitarian access strategies and safeguard their staff and volunteers\, and it offers practical recommendations for transforming coordination structures into more inclusive and effective systems. Developed through a mixed-methods and collaborative design with L/NNGOs\, INGOs\, and academics\, the study centres the experience and expertise of local actors. \nBuilding on these findings and the lived experience of panelists\, the session will explore pathways toward systemic change\, moving beyond tokenistic participation to operationalise the equal role of local humanitarian responders in shaping access\, security\, and protection outcomes. \nThe session has previously been hosted at the Humanitarian Network and Partnerships Week.\nSpeakers\nDiletta Salviati\, Policy and Research Manager\, INSO\nNadine Saba\, President\, Akkar Network Development\nSudhanshu Shekhar Singh\, CEO\, Humanitarian Aid International\nElsa van Soest\, Local Humanitarian Leadership & Learning Advisor\, Oxfam\nThis session is moderated by Rafael Van den Bergh\, Research Coordinator\, Protect Humanitarians\nRegistration\nPlease register via kuno@kuno-platform.nl \nThe session is organised in collaboration with INSO.
